I did meet a group of about 6 Force Recon Marines once at a restaurant in Fayetteville, NC - just off Post. Anyway, these Force Recon Guys were up from Camp Lejeune and at Bragg to go through the Jump Master Course - all enlisted, all NCO's.
They were some of the most polite, professional, well spoken servicemen I've ever met. Their appearance and demeanor were exemplary. They were a credit to the Corps and an example to all the Army guys. They really left a very good impression in my mind. I introduced myself to them, and sat at their table to talk with them and eat. They were very professional, and very courteous. I think they were glad to talk with a Chaplain... always nice to find a friendly face in a new place. Those men won my respect very quickly. I went by the Jump Master Training area and talked to one of the Training NCO's the next day. Those Marines were some of his best students in the class.

I will say there is something about being a Marine which is certainly admire able they have a sense of loyality like no other. I always see Marine stickers on cars no matter what the age it seems they have pride forever. I am not saying that the other branches don't by any means. I think they have a tradition that is promoted more so then some of the others at times, of course part of that might be due to the feeling of being the Naval step son as the others have Academies!!

The Marines cross train with the Army probably more than they do with the Navy. I think the Marines should get their own Academy, and get out from under the Department of the Navy. They're underfunded and under resourced. The best equipment they have is their uniforms. And I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the Marines... they just get a lot of junk and leftovers. Their entire budget is like less than 2% of the entire Navy's budget. I think they should build a U.S. Marine Corps Academy (USMCA) in Virgina... close to Quantico, which is about an hour from Washington (like Annapolis, but in the other direction), or in North Carolina close to Camp Legeune. Marine's have a specific Mission and are Combat oriented. The Naval Academy isn't providing them the best possible training environment. They need something closer to what West Point does - Infantry based Training, but with an emphasis on Amphibious Warfare and Marine Corps Tactics and Tradition. Their Mascot could be the "Devil Dog" The Marines have all kinds of Mottos they could use. I think "Honor, Courage and Commitment" is a traditional and popular Marine Corps slogan, and it is similar to West Point's "Duty, Honor, Country". Their School colors could be Red and Gold Navy is Blue and Gold, Army is Black and Gold. The USMCA I'm proposing would be smaller than West Point or Annapolis or the USAFA, but the Marine Corps is supposed to be smaller and more elite than the Army or the Navy. the Coast Guard has it's own Academy, and it's about half the size of West Point or Annapolis or USAFA. If the Coast Guard Academy can have it's own Academy, instead of just going to Annapolis, why can't the USMC have it's own Academy to meet it's own training needs for Combat oriented, well educated Officers?

I would certainly have to agree with this argument as they get the left overs and often times are barely getting anything at all. They did get a cool uniform and no can claim a better dress look. The Navy I am sure would argue that the white look is hard to beat.
I have often wondered why a separate academy is not created for the Marines, it would certainly make sense and recruit fine young people to the rank of officer so they could have their own identity. If the Coast Guard should get one then so should the Marines who have certainly earned their place in battle |

It's funny to me that Cutter is the only Coastie. He went to the Coast Guard Academy, but ended up coaching the ladies swim team at Annapolis. That's funny to me.
It seems to me that if any Academy could "double up" it would be the Navy and the Coast Guard. They have a similar rank structure, a similar mission, and similar equipment. In a time of war, the USCG can even be put into the service of the Navy. Seems like the USMC should get it's own Academy before the Coast Guard does.

Here's something else about the Coast Guard: they are NOT part of the Department of Defense. They used to be part of the Department of Transportation, but after 9/11 they were moved over to the jurisdiction of the newly formed Department of Homeland Security...
So, the U.S. Military is prevented from operating inside the boarders of the United States. The Army isn't supposed to be deployed in the country. That's why we have the National Guard. There are exceptions made in the case of emergencies, but you can't just send the Marines or the Army to settle things down every time there's a riot in Chicago or Detroit or L.A. or where ever. By Law, No Active duty Branch of service in the Defense Department can be deployed within the boarders of the U.S. But like I said... the Coast Guard isn't in the Department of Defense. What if the Coast Guard developed it's own SEAL Team 6/Delta Force with SWAT/HRT capabilities? Such a group could be deployed within the U.S. as a special operations/counter terrorist unit within U.S. boarders in time of emergency or need without having to jump through all kinds of legal hoops. As a part of the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), it would seem that the Coast Guard could basically develop a program like the Navy's SEAL training program (BUDS) and create it's own counter terrorism unit. They could cross train with SEAL Team 6, and the F.B.I. HRT to train them to be, basically, domestically deployable SEALs. I'm sure the Coast Guard could think of a better name, but you get the idea. The Navy is already recruiting USCG Rescue Swimmers to become SEALs, why not let the Coast Guard use it's own resources to develop its own program and people into a military trained, domestically deployable Special Operations Force. Now some might argue that the F.B.I.'s HRT is roughly comparable to a domestically deployable version of Delta Force... that may be the case. However, that still leaves a lot of American Coast line that could use a SEAL Team equivalent. A special operations amphibious unit seems like a good idea. At least I think so, what do you guys think?
