I also started trying to piece together a chronology of promotions for Hawk and Duke based on file cards, back story and a little imagination. I figured that Duke was an exceptional performer and got promoted in the "secondary zone" and Hawk was most likely on a fast track to General as well, but I wanted to keep the promotions realisitc so I looked at the records of various real-life generals like Colin Powell, Petraeus, etc to determine Years in Grade.
Here's what I have so far: Duke was probably born in 1949. Age 18 1967 E1 Enlisted (see File Card) 18 1967 E2 19 1968 E3 Likely a Vietnam tour 20 1969 E4 Special Forces in South Vietnam 21 1970 E5 Ran 4 Special Forces schools 22 1971 E5 or E6 Refused battlefield commission 23 1972 E6 28 1977 E7 33 1982 E8 Master Sgt 34 1983 E8 First Sgt of GI Joe Hawk was probably born in 1944. Age 21 1965 O1 Graduated West Point 22 1966 O2 24 1968 O3 Company Commander in Vietnam? 28 1972 O4 32 1976 O5 36 1980 O6 38 1982 O6 CO of GI Joe 42 1986 O7 Brigadier General |

Yeah but it's not like Hasbro is having a licensing issue with itself. Use the name anyway they damn please. There can be two different Ripcords at the same time. It's already messed up so who cares? But instead of fixing it they made it worse. Now maybe there is a licensing issue with Freefall, but you know anyone can write a filecard, even if it ain't perfect. Save Freefall for later and Altitude too, and just call this guy Pathfinder..er no wait...Skydive...no...ummm... how about Drop-Zone? Geronimo!?

Ahh, I see. I'm sorry for my confusion. Thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, that's weird and it's a problem and it creates a headache for collectors.

Also, would an E5 ever be offered a battlefield commission? Perhaps an E6 or higher. What do you guys think?
Also, from what I've read, there were no official battlefield commissions given out to Army NCOs in Vietnam, but in an interview General Westmoreland said, “We did commission several NCO’s on the battlefield in Vietnam.” So it's unclear, but the Marines did commission several men in Vietnam. For fiction sake: Maybe Duke was the only person offered a commission but he turned it down, so officially no commissions occurred during that war. But would he have been an E5 or E6? |

Hawk was a 3 star in DDP and his last VvV figure has 3 stars on his headgear. Duke is another story in DDP years. |

Still Like Troy is saying even though Major Altitude is not part of the new Ripcord/Altitude/Freefall bastardization his lot is cast with that mess because they can't have both. Although they had both released one year apart in 90/91!?! But let's face it Major Altitude is a terrible codename when 1. You're not a Major 2. They just released a guy with a nearly identical codename a year prior 3. Why didn't someone make you pick something else? |

Trying to reconcile the existing Joe timeline can you give you a real headache. It's probably best to kind of use what's been established as an outline and fill in the blanks ourselves.
Off the top of my head, I figure Snake Eyes' life roughly like this. Born in 1953. Enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1971. Served three tours. Discharged in 1974. Informed by Hawk that his family was killed. Studies with Arashikage clan from 1974-78. Lives in seclusion in the Sierras from 1978-81. Recruited by Hawk and Stalker in early 1981. Suffers the accident that leaves him scarred and mute. |
