Have you ever read the book Sniper I believe it is called about the marine sniper Sgt. Hatchcock in Viet Nam? He uses a 50 cal with a scope as a sniper platform and picks guys off from his spot on a hill. I couldn't believe reading about it as he would press down on the butterfly trigger

I think I know what you mean. (Im a bit unfamiliar all the military lingo I admit.) In my Joeverse, Duke is like he was in one comic I remember reading, where he trained the new GI Joe recruits. (is that what yo mean by NCOIC?) I also dont mind him as a squad leader when the need arises. He's good for that too. (I dont hate him altogether, it just annoys me that Hasbro seems to have forgotten who the real (not to mention original) leader of the GI Joe team is. And they keep pushing Duke down our throats as the teams leader. To me Hawk is like Optimus Prime, you dont replace him. Remember Rodimus?) But Flint and Falcon are my second in commands. But Hawk still leads from the front. Sort of like how Picard did with his people. Even though he wasnt necessarily supposed to go on the Away Teams (that was his Fist Officer's job), he did so often. Not just because he was good at it, but because he liked to! Even though Flint is outranked by others as well, he just seems the natrual second. Plus he's darn cool! Falcon is also cool, and I would have liked to have seen him developed more as a character. And being Lt. he outranks a lot of others anyway. Quote:
Yeah, I read through like 18 pages of this thread. WOW its a long one. I just didnt have time to go through any more even though its quite interesting. So if you know of any specific pages that cover some of that, feel free to point me in the right direction. OH and btw... this is such a cool topic! I used to read all the file cards. I gotta admit though that even though I still love GI Joe and collect the new figures, I often dont read the cards any more. This strikes my interest to do so.

That's why my Duke is a (0-8) equivalent government operator. It bothered me too much. My Flint is a Colonel too. It feels so much better this way.
But Version2 Mercer is one of my Favorite figures. Maybe because he's a Virginia boy, but my theory is that he was so undercover for the government that when he came back he received his due rank. His first incarnation was just a brief period of witness protection where they hid his Identity. But my Mercer is always, Richard Cecil. |

Yeah, in real life. But GI JOE is fantasy and a bit of sci-fi mixed with some real life concepts. So its cool to have a General like Hawk lead. It sort of goes back to when rulers would have their generals of their army lead the men out to battle. And 'sides... that would be Hawk's character (as it was always stated in his file cards) to do so, regardless of his rank. He's just not a desk jockey. (again, sort of like Captain Picard more than often leading an away team, even against normal military protocol or standars) Also... I know if I was Hawk, I'd be in the field. Off topic here... but Tanksmasher's avatar and sig reminded me of something...
When I was a kid, I LOVED my Mercer figure because he reminded me of Dutch and Arnold's character in Commando (well, namely the later, because I didnt see Predator until probably years after I saw Commando). Perfect real life representation of Mercer in my book!

Yeah, Mercer does look a lot like Arnold. It's the vest and short cropped hair, I think. If they make a modern era Mercer, he'll make great custom fodder for Dutch or Commando Arnold.

I just wikipedia-ed Sgt. Hathcock. Man, this guy is a one bas @$$.
Hathcock and John Burke, his spotter, were stalking the enemy sniper in the jungle near Hill 55, the firebase Hathcock was operating from. The sniper had already killed several Marines, and was believed to have been sent specifically to kill Hathcock. When Hathcock saw a flash of light (light reflecting off the enemy sniper's scope) in the bushes,[2] he fired at it, shooting through the scope and killing the sniper. Does the 25th GI Joe Hawk's "fruit salad" on his jacket tell any tale? Last edited by Pimp Daddy Darklon; 11-20-2008 at 02:44 AM.. |

The book is pretty amazing when you read all that he went through to get to his targets at times

I've always wondered how the hell snipers got away after they shot someone, especially if everyone comes out and starts scouring the ground. Creeping in is one thing, but creeping out...or even running, which would give up your position. And what if the enemy starts shelling the general area you are in. Or they could use dogs to find you. It's insane. You have to have a huge set of brass nuts to do this!
