I ended up re-thinking my approach to some of the characters I've made with all the feedback I've gotten from you guys this past weekend along with some input from Spigou recently. One of the things that really stuck with me was something Master Thespian said to me via PM, something along the lines of putting aside my personal distaste for and biases against certain characters and trying to give them the type of characterization that they deserve (this was with regards to my irrational nerd anger with all things Salvo-related). While helping him with his modding yesterday, Spigou also mentioned something about keeping true to the original visual designs of the characters. Updating them is good, but if they lose their identifying elements in the process, it would just be better in terms of consistency with the design ethic I'm trying to maintain if I create some all-new Joes altogether (which defeats the whole purpose of "recontextualizing" and "updating" which are my twin goals with the reference bible).
Anyway, I've re-written the filecard to Super-Trooper and made some minor changes to a number of others (I can't remember which ones at this point). I've redesigned my take on Grid-Iron to reflect the original costume: That's not a football helmet on his head. It's a Bell Pro Tactical/Correctional Helmet, which, coveniently enough for my purposes, just happens to vaguely look like a football helmet from a certain angle. I've also re-written his filecard to take into account oliverbox's insights and comments from earlier in this thread. Adjusted Ozone's beard. Troynos was right about it looking off in the initial image I posted. And here's the team's S1 (Personnel/Administrative Officer), Courage (derived from the Colonel Courage toy, one of the few salvage-able character ideas from 1993's Battle Corps line): That's not a "costume" by the way. It's actually the new Army Service class "B" Uniform, which was introduced earlier this year and is slated to replace the current green class "B" uniforms used by all soldiers by 2014. I personally think it looks horrendous (reminds me of mall rent-a-cops), but it's an almost note-for-note match with Colonel Courage's original uniform. I mean seriosuly, what does it say about the uniform design when it actually looks like it came from a 1993 Battle Corps character's closet? I'm also changing my approach as to which characters make the cut for the reference bible. Instead of drawing a hard line saying that all 1982-1991 characters make the roster, I'm instead making it a bit more flexible. All the 1982 to 1988 characters are in (with the exclusion of "cross-promotional" characters like The Fridge and Sgt. Slaughter, as well as BattleForce2000 --- with the exception of Dodger) since they were the ones I originally intended to include, and I'm cherry-picking usable characters from 1989 to 1993. So guys like Cold Front and Windchill are out: I just can't come up with uses for them in the team hierarchy that won't require wholesale re-writing of their backgrounds, and that just doesn't square with the new design philosophy I've adopted, influenced by your feedback). This also means Bulletproof and Ice Cream Soldier are in (they fill two practical needs for the team). I've also moved around a few more guys within the hierarchy to better reflect their original specialties and purposes. The updated organizational hierarchy can be found at teh following sendspace.com link: Last edited by zuludelta; 06-01-2009 at 02:49 PM.. |

Glad you like the helmet. As I mentioned in my previous post, it's an actual tactical helmet that just happens to look like a football helmet. |

Additionally, I've decided to adopt "non-classic" interpretations of a couple of characters as I prefer them over their classic versions. Jinx is now based on the Chinese-American operative depicted in GI Joe: Cobra and I have Long-Range as a sniper based on his depiction in the Sigma 6 series (the original ARAH version was an artillery soldier).

I can't wait to see what you do for Ice Cream Soldier. God... I cringe when I say that name.

There are two 3-3/4" Long Ranges. But I think one of 'em falls way outside your years. Instead of a sniper, Long Range would have been perfect to make into a Forward Observer. He pretty much performs that role in the one comic issue he showed up in with the Thunderclap.

How are you filling in all the missing spots? New characters or greenshirts?

I think I'm really going to like your approach with cherry picking the later characters.

EDIT: I just got a look at GridIron's new face and I think the cocky younger face he had before suited him better. The new face looks oldish. Last edited by Master Thespian; 06-01-2009 at 04:33 PM.. |

I love it. I don't think you have to limit yourself to some of the Crappy outfits.. Ice Cream Soldier can go as far away from the original as humanly possible. He could just be Sgt. Ragan instead. I like my Long-Range 2 figure (Garcia). I see this as a good use for him. And whio doesn't need more snipers. If you needed to add the first one he could also go by his last name, but your Mortar teams are filled with NCO's and he outranks them both. I think you could stop agreeing to the new characters, and concentrate on the ones you had planned originally. Yet you could add the later Joes to your Org Bible in Blue, lets say, to designate that an image and a file card is not forth coming. As Placeholders. No one really worries about the supply guys for instance but you have only 18 spots left on your DA element. And some of the later years produced a few decent characters. Plus I can think of 7 joes that will fill out your S6 section. But adding Surefire to the mix may sort of throw things off, but he works as a place holder. Zulu work has been such a pleasure to follow. And although he did not necessarily open the flood gate for every TOM, DICK and HARRY (Those are the original Dreadnoks 1st names!) I want to share my take on the 25 Joes that may or may not make the cut.
I added where they naturally seem to fit in the Structure.
