Just did some minor updates to the GI Joe Army officers filecards. Apparently, the Army now refers to the "Operations" career field as "Maneuvers, Fires & Effects" (they must have changed it while I wasn't looking) and moved the Military Intelligence Corps from the former Operations career field to the Operations Support career field. It probably makes no difference to most people, but being obsessive with detail, I had to go back and update Hawk's, Doc's, Psyche-Out's, and Super Trooper's filecards to reflect that minor change.

I remember seeing commercials for the comics and toys on TV. The one for #11, with Doc, Airborne, Snow Job and Gung-Ho being introduced, was awesome.
Watching the commercial and then the animation zooms into the cover for the comic. Yep, I was sold.

I've always wondered about what they think of my IP address constantly accessing their servers. I remember learning about the DoD's "Carnivore" network security program during one of my computer science classes back in university. They probably have my IP address and whatever proxy servers I use to bypass geographic access restrictions to DoD sites already archived somewhere

And since you're Canadian and Homeland Security can't touch you...
The real world equivalent of Low-Light is in a tree outside your house watching you....

That cover sticks out the most in my memory, that issues as well (great issue), because of that commercial.

Oh, and since we're speaking about the comics, I've always wondered what you guys thought of the fictional countries in the Marvel comics. I loved how Hama used them to make (barely) veiled political satire and commentary regarding US and USSR foreign policy and corporate intrusion into politics.
Some examples and their real-world analogues: Sierra Gordo: the prototypical Central American nation caught in a civil war between a US-backed right wing armed faction and a Soviet-backed socialist people's army, with the civilians caught in the middle. It was only years later that I realized that Hama was also satirizing the United Brands/Chiquita International Brands company when he introduced the "North American Banana Monopoly" in the mix (here's a link to Bananagate, the political scandal that led to the overthrow of the Honduran government in the late 1970s). Frusenland: Iceland analogue. Borovia: a stand-in for any number of former Eastern Bloc republics, although I'd like to think it was an analogue for Yugoslavia. Trucial Abysmia: I think Trucial Abysmia was originally intended to be a stand-in for Ethiopia. In the nation's first appearance in the comics (GI Joe Special Missions #13), it was stated that it was located in East Africa, and it was apparent that the "Abysmal Liberation Army" was a communist military agency (at the time of the comic book's writing, Ethiopia was one of the few remaining USSR-backed socialist republics). By the time the country reappeared in GI Joe #108, though, it had been relocated to the Middle East, and was obviously a stand-in for Iraq and it had transformed from a communist state to a "republican" nation. Benzheen: Kuwait analogue ("benzene" ha ha) Last edited by zuludelta; 05-29-2009 at 04:40 PM.. |
