I've never personally known any officers (much less any chaplains) myself so I've always wondered how they viewed line guys from their personal perspectives. My uncle (a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy) would occasionally tell us stories about how some of the young officers he was serving under were a bit out of touch with the realities enlisted men and women face. I guess that's why I've always been sympathetic to Larry Hama's enlisted-centric view of things, even more so after I spent my time with the ARESCOM/NCR RCDG as just another line grunt (everybody thinks they're special until they go infantry ). |

I tend to agree. Super Heroe comics, the suspension of disbelief is still there, even for an adult viewpoint, because it's super heroes.. it's not real. There's a huge element of fantasy and "make-believe" to it, so that allows for a larger radius to the suspension of belief.
With something that's in the current timeline and fairly realistic, like G.I. Joe,the radius of disbelief is a lot smaller.

Oh boy.
I'm really tiny by comparison. Shrimpy, even. I'm about 165 cm and my "fighting weight" was at 125 lbs (I was an amateur long distance runner at the time though). I guess I can play Tunnel Rat (hey, I've already got the Asian facial features down) |

Cool story, thanks for sharing it.
My Father and Grandfather were both Army Officers, and in my biased estimation they were both good officers, but they had very different personalities and styles of leadership. I'm a Chaplian; I don't command the way they did. It's not my job. My job, as I see it, is to be with the soldier where they are and let them trust me, so they can come to me when they need help. Sometimes that means I've done some things I might should not have done: like cleaning weapons with the troops. I'm not supposed to really even tough a weapon, and cleaning them is a gray area. But Soldiers usually hate cleaning weapons after a field exercise. They're tired and they're ready to go home. If I can help them during this time, they see that I'm really with them all the way. I sleep where they sleep. I eat what they eat. I hump my pack right along with them. They have to see me with them, doing what they do, if they're going to trust me... and earning their trust in vital to doing my job - my job is to serve soldiers. Our enlisted troops are the hands and feet of the Army. The NCOs are the backbone, and the Officer Corps is the Head. All the parts need care.

Can I still be Flint? From what I've been told I'm a pretty imposing figure. I'd settle for Hit & Run.

The Team could use a good "Tunnel Rat". Some of the best soldiers I know are small guys... lots of Asians, and Puerto Ricans.

Yeah, that's my problem... it is a comic book for kids, but let's be honest: how many "kids" are really reading the new Joe Stuff, and how many Joe readers are old fans who have grown up? I mean, it's not like IDW's stuff is readily available at the 7-11 or the Grocery Store. You have to go to a comic shop to get it, and that's mostly guys in their 20's and 30's. The problems is that these inconsistencies and other problems with a plausible reality are becoming ever more apparent as we get older, and the writers need to do a better job of allowing for that change. It's like this, there was a time when Zulu's work would have made me angry: "That's not who G.I. Joe is!" But now I see it as necessary for any fan: "This is how G.I. Joe would really have to be." Because I do see a lot of Star Wars on the Racks at random book stores and Convenience stores. And I'm trying to remember when that started. There use to be only one Star Wars Comic Line. Now there are 20 different titles at any given moment. And the new ones are more geared towards adults I would say. Much of them are pretty cool but it seems random what you get. I have a hard time just picking those up sometimes. I don't really shop for comics much and GIJoe alone is about all I want to spend. But the key to any comicbook is the characters. If there is no one to identify with in some way there is no interest. I think they could do a better job in some respects but I know nothing about writing a comic. Larry had a certain style that we all grew to like and it only soured when he had to produce something he no longer enjoyed. GIJoe is a toy franchise. Larry just made it more than that. But i wish for more realism. I think the GIJoe franchise could survive even if Snake-Eyes died. He would need to be replaced immediately by someone nearly as cool, but as long as there are Origins series and one shots and special Missions he may never have to be out of the Comics entirely. Anyone Read the BobaFett series? Those were good, and they only added to the mystique. But really Boba Fett died in 1984? As much as I love my Favorite Joes, one of the things I love the most are the new characters we get. I'm sort of bored with some of the older characters. I still remember how cool SE and Storm Shadow and Firefly seemed when I was 10 but if they all died and were replaced by Beachhead and Black Ripcord and Kamakura I could live with that. I'm with you. The franchise would survive without SE and SS. I was upset when people kept saying there couldn't be more Resolute because SS was dead. BULL PUCKIE!!
One character, even the SE/SS interplay, does not a series make. I'm tired of SE/SS. I'm tired of it being forced (Resolute and the movie) into the storyline because it's "expected". At this point I think it takes away more then it enhances. It's played out. Star Wars has comics that deal with the Old Republic (way before Phantom Menace), one that deals with the Clone Wars, one that deals with the future (Luke's descendants), one that deals with the Yuuzhon Vong war (20 years after Return of the Jedi) and the expanded universe stuff (the continuing adventures of Luke & Leia). I got into comics thru one I found at the toy store. It was issue #1 and it was oversized, this thing is BIG (about 3-4 times the size of a normal comic). Then I saw a 3 pack at the grocery store (back when they used to sell 'em like that) with #3, 4 and 5. Got more like that and then I discovered a comic store. Started getting Transformers and then just kept going from there. A kids cartoon, but not a Combat Heroes style, more like 8-12 year old kind of cartoon, is what is needed.

And as for a new Cartoon, My two little girls prefer to watch a more realistic looking cartoon to a kiddie ones 9 out of ten times. They may not like it after 2 minutes but something about the realism draws them in. My 3 yr old still makes me play Resolute for her, and she watches it for about 2 episodes. Still My nephews only want to see the parts with Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow in it. So I know that is what little boys want to see. I must have bought the same 3 pack at the grocery store, and that's how I got started. Because I think the first cartoon mini-series was already released at that time. Then I saw that 3,4,5 comic 3pack. my next one was #9 and then when they released the second wave of figures they had a great commercial for the toys that matched the #11 comic. BOOM I'm hooked!! That right there was the recipe for success! |
