I think it would be helpful if we saw the Ranger Regiment and Ranger School as different things. I know the word "Ranger" is in both of them, but they are different. The Regiment has a specific mission focus. The regular light Infantry has a particular mission focus, The Airborne Infantry has a particular mission focus, the Cavalry has a mission focus... and ALL OF THOSE UNITS can benefit by sending it's best soldiers to Ranger School to become better Infantry leaders. Ranger School is Infantry Leadership Training... not just "Ranger Regiment" training.
Oh well, no big deal. Just have to keep remembering there's a difference.

Zuludelta, this has been a longstanding question of mine concerning Delta teams. How are they structured? In Bowden's book Black Hawk Down, Delta worked in four-man teams and each team leader was an E-7, but other men on the teams, such as two medics, were E-7s as well. But Bowden doesn't really break down the role of each team member. In other words, an SF team typically has teams of six men: Medical Sgt, Comm Sgt, Engineer Sgt, Weapons Sgt, Opearations Sgt and the Detachment Commander or Warrant Officer. Are Delta teams structured similarly?
The structure of Delta Teams are 4-man teams... that's the basic element. Although, if Delta wants to do a larger scale operation, then those units combine into larger units lead by a higher ranking soldier. However, there are times when 1 or 2 Delta Operators get tasked for a specific assignment. It's pretty mission dependent. An E-7 or E-8 would lead one of these 4-man teams. two or four of these teams might then be overseen by an E-8 or E-9. The books aren't overly specific, but I think that's purposeful - security reasons. Officers still oversee things. There is Rank in Delta Force, unlike what some on this thread have suggested. No one under E-6 is even invited to try out for selection. Officers have to be at least a Captain. The question I have is : What about Warrant Officers? I couldn't find any real mention of them, but SF has them and really counts on them. So I don't know. I would imagine that an SF Warrant would be allowed to try out if he wanted to.

Well, nobody wants a tab that says, "Infantry Leadership Training". Everybody wants to be a Ranger... I mean, c'mon. Doesn't everybody here wish they were a Ranger? I know I do.

Of course, not being in the military, that may be a normal NCO/officer relationship in a unit. I don't really know.

I've always wondered about not only this, but where would a Captain fit in? Staff and support only? Or do some of them do field work?

I believe 12 man SF teams are lead by a Captain. Headquarters goes to a Major.
So a 0-3 as CO and an CW-2 as XO an E-8 SNCO and an E-7 is next as the Weapons Sgt. are the leadership of a 12 man team. As force Multipliers they would use this team to support a company sized unit of indigenous forces. Especially the Radio guy, but I 'm not sure if they use their own or a Combat Controller? Oh, I try to be a man of peace - a non-combatant, if you will - then again, as an Army Chaplain in Special Operations Command, I was trained in "Unarmed Combat" and "Edged Weapons" over at the JFKSWTC (that's the Green Beret School, for laymen)... but if you really think it's necessary, I'll play; Just say when. Yupper, that's it. It looks like Oliver can't make it (Father's Day being a problem for, y'know, fathers) - how about any of the rest of you?
Methodist Ministers are referred to as "Brother" or "Reverend" or sometimes "Pastor" but never as "Father". Father's Day is a big Sunday in Church... and I work on Sundays. Quote:
So this afternoon's back and forth made me wonder while I was on my way home from work - who do you guys think did screw up enough to get demoted/reprimanded/kicked out of the Joes (the standard bearer for failure, I think I put it) or didn't belong in the first place?
Oliver obviously thinks Duke, which I'm okay with as long as he knows I disagree. Any thoughts? Your arguments about Rip-Cord have a lot of merit. But to my mind, there's nothing that says they both shouldn't be dismissed. Hama could have used that as basis to bring in new characters... clear out some space, so to speak. Plus, the military works that way. People come and go. No one stays forever. In a lot of ways, Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Scarlett's crazy shenanigans and special AWOL trips could be grounds for court-martial. I know, that's almost heresy, but I think there's grounds for it. For as much good as they did, they also caused a lot of trouble and drama. just my opinion.

I think maybe the confusion comes from comments like those made by Dalton Fury (the author of "Kill Bin Laden") about his relationship with his NCOs, particularly Ironside. Fury was a major (or a Lt. Colonel, depending on who you asked ;) ) and he often took his lead from his NCOs.
Of course, not being in the military, that may be a normal NCO/officer relationship in a unit. I don't really know.
