Did Ripcord show up much after that? I don't recall seeing him much, which makes me wonder if they kicked him out off-panel. I might just be reading too much into the whole situation, though.

I was thinking more along the lines of his ejecting over Cobra Island without any permission whatsoever, and all the trouble that got the Joes into (eventually leading to the discovery of the PIT II and the deaths of some high-level military folks). Also, Hollingsworth, Dyson and Ryan temporarily shut down the Joe team over the Springfield incident - I could've seen Ripcord getting some blame for it as an intel failure, maybe, aside from the other repercussions.

I'd forgotten about the unauthorized parachute over Cobra Island. He did disappear after that whole thing, never heard a peep again. Yeah, I think he got the boot.

I guess it has to do with there being more Ranger School graduates than there are TOE-allocated slots in the 75th Ranger Regiment. The personnel guys needed to come up with a way to account for these Ranger School graduates who weren't in the Ranger Regiment. Hence, the distinction between "Ranger qualifed" (a graduate of Ranger School not necessarily assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment) and "Ranger" (a graduate of Ranger School assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment), although strictly speaking, a graduate of Ranger School has probably earned the right to be called a Ranger, regardless of whether or not he's actually assigned to the 75th. Conversely, there are also non-Ranger qualifed personnel assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment (combat support and combat service support personnel, combat personnel waiting for a slot to oepn up in Ranger School, etc.).
I imagine it's the same reason for all the different Marine Reconnaissance-qualified personnel labels. But I think anyone that's graduated should be called that (Ranger or Force Recon or whatever) even if not actively serving in the unit. How do the Qualified people keep up with the training if not in an active Ranger unit? Doesn't make sense to have 'em as "back-up"s if they lose the training and don't keep up to date.

From the time Ripcord joins the team to the destruction of PIT II was a good 2yr run. All sort of revolved around Ripcord. Although I loved Ripcord as a figure. He was only the 2nd figure to come in Camo. besides Stalker. |

I was first thinking that it doesn't make sense to have a bunch of Ranger-qualified people but not have 'em in the 75th. But then, because it's a high combat unit, you'd want to have trained people ready to step up and in at a moment's notice to replace lost personal.

I think the honor of being Ranger Qualified may be enough for some guys. But once you earn your Ranger tab, you earn the right to be referred to as a Ranger I believe. But on paper that's probably a different story since there is a distinction between what unit you serve in. Plus Like oliver mentioned, Career wise guys need to get that tab if they want to pursue their military careers. I suspect many of the trainees are NCOs and officers who will go back to their units after ranger School. Yet they were senior enough or had enough pull to be allowed to go to Ranger school to further their training. I don't think they are all waiting in the wings sort of speak. They probably role through 3 classes a year right, so there are always enough recruits. Once you make the team then the continual training begins. All the Spec Ops guys train all the time. It cost a pretty penny to continually train guys so there can be only so many roster spots. |

Almost makes you think there should be a practice squad like they have in football or a minor league kind of thing like baseball.
So the ones that aren't going back to their units graduate from Ranger School but there's no spot for them in the 75th. They go into this "reserve" unit and continue their training so they're up to speed and ready the day comes to move into the 75th.

WWII had a mix of units that formed the basis of the Rangers or were incorporated into the rangers. Then in Vietnam they attached Ranger Companies to larger units to serve as LRRPs. Now I'm not sure. I believe they deploy each battalion one at a time and must swap them out after 1 year. That way one is deployed, one is ready to be deployed and then one is being trained up and having it's rosters filled. Guys that are ready to leave the service probably finish out their careers with the training battalions. |

That makes sense.

Maybe "Ranger-Trained" is a better word then "Ranger-Qualified". The Qualified makes it sound like can step into the 75th at a moment's notice. Trained just says that the person received the training but isn't one.
