I'm guessing that the superhero comics-reading population is the majority.
I've nothing against superhero comics and superhero concepts, but I just don't enjoy them the way I used to, certainly not on the same level I still enjoy GI Joe. It's been something I've been thinking about lately. I think it has something to do with the core motivation of the superhero becoming more difficult to empathize with as I grow older. Superheroes, by their nature, are expressions of (and I mean no disrespect of the genre or its fans by this) juvenile and adolescent themes. At their core, superheroes impose their individual will on the general population through force (or "superpowers"), enforcing what they feel to be a superior and benevolent moral and ethical code. This is something I would have no problems with when I was younger, but as I grew older and starting thinking about the appeal superheroes held for me, I began to question that approach. I also started growing uneasy with the unstated premise found in many superhero comics: that their powers somehow accorded them implicit impositional privileges not available to normal people. The only thing differentiating superheroes and supervillains is that "normal people" are okay with whatever ethical and moral controls superheroes enforce while they're opposed to the ones supervillains try to enforce. But at their core, they are both applying Nietzsche-an principles, and that's just something I can't get behind, even if it's "just a comic book." Soldiers on the other hand, even fictional ones like GI Joe, ideally don't impose their individual will on populations. They impose the collective will of a duly-elected government, empowered by the social contract inherent in the democratic process. That's a premise that, as a recreational adult reader, I can invest myself in. That makes the characters more relatable to me. They're not out there bullying others into falling in line with some personal moral and ethical agenda, they're simply regualr people doing their jobs, enforcing policies and orders they may or may not agree with. It's that devotion to duty that appeals to me with GI Joe.

I'm drawing a blank here too. I don't even remember them being in the Marvel comics. Issue 68 has the Ice-Vipers against Battle Force 2000, but the snow missions were sort of over after that. The best feature of them is in DDP Special Missions. The Cartoons have them quite a bit. Aren't they all over Cobra-La?

34 strong and growing. not counting the V2 serpents or the Ice Viper cuz I dont really like them and will probably sell them off. I'd like to get some of the MOTH serpents to use as officers and some of the MOTH ice vipers to use as drivers for the HISS III's that will be supporting them. Speaking of arctic army..
I got my RoC Ice-Viper tonight. What a great figure. Definately looks like an arctic trooper and on the back of it's jacket, he has a rolled up bedrool and pouches. Great detailing. Great figure. And can just ignore the missile. He's now going to be called Snowblind and is the overall leader of the Cobra Arctic Forces.

Just went and updated my Duke image and filecard:
I've decided to combine elemements of Duke v1 (the tan shirt with rolled up sleeves), Duke v2 ("Tiger Force Duke") (camo pants... although I compromised by giving him "dirtied up" ACU pants instead of tiger-stripe camo pants), and Duke v30 ("Resolute Duke") (body armour and gloves). Also did some minor tweaks to his filecard. I'll be doing some changes to Flash as well after talking to Master Thespian at some length about the character (which is why I've temporarily taken down his filecard from the Filecard Project album along with the Flash image from my Custom Figures & Art Hisstank Pictures album), and I've modified and updated Tunnel Rat's filecard and moved him to a combat role (instead of a first responder role with the rest of the EOD/Ordnance clearance guys). Also, I was checking the usage stats for the pictures in the Filecard album and it turns out that the Hardtop filecard has been the subject of the most unique views. I didn't think that guy was that popular. Last edited by zuludelta; 05-28-2009 at 07:41 PM.. Reason: Picture updated |

Does he really look that old? It takes a soldier about 22 years to make Sergeant Major (which is the rank I have Duke at) so I think he looks about average or even young-ish for a guy in his early 40s. Is it the gray streak in the hair throwing the look off? I was second-guessing myself about adding it.

I was thinking he looked closer to 60. The gray streak, the wrinkled face. Like the "old" Duke face better. Like the updated look though.

Went back to the original head (see new pic in my edited post above). You're right, he does look "harder" with the original face I went with.
