Guys, I wish we could all get together some weekend. It's great discussing story threads and character development. It would be fantastic if we could jointly work on our own GI Joe Re-Imagined as Troynos put it. Maybe some weekend we could coordinate something. I know money is a factor for some, but I could always cough up a Buddy Pass for anyone willing to fly standby.

Could just be an editorial mistake, since Hama's not writing both series.

I could get into DC easily or if everyone wanted to meet in ATL that's even easier for me of course. If Troynos wanted, I could hook him up with a Buddy Pass to fly from NH to DC or ATL but you have to be flexible because Buddy Passes can be a pain sometimes but they're cheap.

You're kidding, right? Of the three examples I offered, this was the last one I gave. Granted, it's probably the weakest of the three... but the other two are so egregious that I don't even need this one!
But I'll play. Duke was basically advising Falcon (all but ordering him) which way to go. He led them into the trap. Shouldn't Duke have known better? Maybe. Then, as you put it, HE surrendered and expected lawful treatment - FROM COBRA?!!! Shouldn't Duke have known better? Then he got the crap kicked out of him by Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren? Shouldn't Duke have fought better? And Duke lets the men under his command die while cowering in fear? And then he cries about it? Is this the man who won the Medal of Honor? For the inability to effectively lead in battle, for inaction in the face of danger that lead to the death of most of their unit, Falcon and Duke should have been relieved of duty and possibly court-martialed. Not even Airborne could have lawyered them out of that one, my friend. CC was worried that by killing the Joes in cold blood he'd anger the Joes? uhm.. So? Why would that worry him? Tomax and Xamot not up to doing the killing themselves? That's out of character as well. The Joes expecting to be treated like normal PoWs by Cobra? Huh??? Just to much of that didn't make sense.

It would be fun too if we could meet during a convention or something. I've never done SDCC or any of comic/toy conventions. Every fall ATL hosts dragoncon but I've never been there either. Don't know if they have anything Joe related there.

I got the impression that CC was more worried about pissing off Snake Eyes - wasn't this just an issue after Snakes got past all of CC's guards and held a blade to his throat?

Some guys hate the DDP stuff. I used to hate it until I went back and reread the entire Marvel Run. Hama was great, especially early on. And his style is certainly the way I like Joe to read, but I was also a kid when I read Hama's stuff, and it carved an impression on me. If I had read DDP as a kid, who knows how I would feel?
But the comic book was originally targeted towards a young readership as a toy tie-in, so in that context, what Hama was able to do was certainly impressive. With DDP, I think their editors should have realized that the majority of the GI Joe comic book fans were no longer the pre-teens they were in the 1980s, and I think they should have changed their approach to the property to adapt to that change. Instead, I think we got a decent (if superficial) stylistic approximation of Hama's comics and the 1980s cartoons updated for current times, which was great for nostalgia, but didn't really appeal to my sensibilities as an adult reader. Quote:
Yeah, I hear what you're saying. Larry Hama is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it would have been hard for fans to accept a total revamp of the continuity if Mr. Hama hadn't been involved. On the other hand, Larry is kind of like George Lucas... "thanks for the old stuff, but if you could leave it alone now, that would be great".

So if you could redo GI Joe, what major elements would you change...
... what about the fact that Vietnam can no longer serve as combat experience for a modern series of thirty-something soldiers? Vietnam was very much a character-shaping element in Hama's Joeverse. Sure there's Desert Storm but Vietnam was something bigger, more controversial, and it shadowed American culture like a vulture. Quote:
I'd probaably leave Vietnam in the backstory of characters like Snake Eyes, and either tell stories set in the 80s or create the current crop of Joes. Charlie Beckwith may have founded Delta Force, but he's not running it these days - you could the same with the Joes.
Quote:
I guess if I were redoing G.I. Joe for today, I would use the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's not the same as Vietnam, but America's not the same as it was in the aftermath of Vietnam in the '70s and '80s. It would have to be a G.I. Joe for today, shaped by the combat experiences of today.

Funny you should mention that. I did some character designs and breakdowns for a comic book a while back (unfortunately, I think the comic book in question never made it to publishing, or is at least still lookign to get published). I'd like to think that my figure-drawing and storytelling skills are more than up to the task of illustrating a comic book, but from past experience, I know that the deadlines for a serial product like a comic book series would just kill me (particularly if it was a non-paying "hobby gig"... getting paid to do something like that would be another matter entirely). |

Hardly. Did you not see my response to the others? As I mentioned, your second example isn't even valid - Duke wasn't even AROUND for the fall of the Pit II.
I'm not even going to address the rest of it, since it's pretty clear we're not going to agree on the interpretation of the issue, as your view on what happened in it and mine are dramatically different.
