I've been thinking about what oliverbox said a few weeks ago about Recondo's work with the Tucaro tribesmen in Sierra Gordo (this happened in the 30ish or 40ish issues of the Marvel series) marking him as a Special Forces type. Based on that, I've decided to rework my prior Recondo as an SF operator:
I've rewritten his filecard (and exchanged his position on the team with Outback's, due to Recondo getting a bump up in rank), and did some minor edits/updates on 13 others (Airborne, Alpine, Beach Head, Duke, Dusty, Flint, Iceberg, Outback, Ripcord, Snow-Job, Spirit, Stalker, Starduster). Check them out using the Filecard Project link in my signature. |

That's a cool looking Recondo. What's the tube coming out of his backpack? Waterline?

Can make Outback a Marine now. He'd make a good Force Recon.

First of all, Zulu, I love what you're doing with the Joes. The attention to detail you have is excellent, such as Grunt's degree in engineering from the Marvel run. I'd also like to recommend a book to my fellow 'tankers. It's called "None Braver" and it deals with PJs, the 160th SOAR, and other Air Force units stationed in the Afghanistan area. Talks a lot about the PJs' training and what makes them tick. It also has some good photos for reference. An excellent read.

I'll have to pick that up. The more I looked into the PJ's the more I want to learn. They're relatively unheard of, don't hear them ranked up there with Rangers and SEaLs (the two most well known Spec Ops units) and don't get as much attention as Marines and Force Recon. But from what little I've read, they're every bit as tough as Rangers.

Yeah, Troynos, they are extremely tough, Type A personality guys. One of the PJs in the book started out in a class of 80. In the end, he and 6 others graduated. Another PJ said that they are less egotistical than SEALs! I think we don't hear much about them because their role is limited-in the sense that their mission is CSAR, not counter insurgency, counter terror, etc. Michael Hirsh is the author. Another good PJ book is "That Others May Live" by Jack Brehm, more autobiography and less CSAR, though.

Everything I've heard/read/seen about the PJ's and the Combat Controllers is that they are extremely tough... I suppose the nature of their missions is such that they aren't often thought of in the same way as the Rangers, SF, SEALs, or Force Recon. Many of the USAF Special Operators do go through Ranger School, and they are, of course, all Airborne qualified. They do SERE and Scuba and HALO. All the training you would expect for a US Commando.
I'll tell y'all what has peaked my interest lately is the British Special Forces: SAS, SBS, SRR, the Paras, Royal Marines, etc. I don't know alot about their training, and I would like to learn more. Does anyone know any good books on British Commando training/operations? The little bits I have read lead me to believe these guys may be the very best in the world. The authors of the books on Delta Force that I read talk about the SAS and SBS with a lot of respect, and sometimes awe. Zulu, do you know anything about those units?

Zulu,
I really like what you did with Recondo. I think it really encompasses who he was in the comic and in the old file cards. One thing I noticed was that Ranger School is not on his list of qualifications... that struck me as interesting. His time as an instructor at the jungle warfare school would almost require a Ranger Tab, wouldn't it? Just a thought. Other than that, I really think this version is a great update. It's a fresh take on a great character that respects the past and includes his history. I hope you don't take my comments as critical, they're never meant to be. The other guys on this thread can tell you, I'm just really detail oriented and like every nerd, the continuity matters to me ;) I always enjoy seeing your work.

I've been giving some thought to Zulu's project in light of what Larry Hama said to us. Mr. Hama stated that he never gave that much thought to the Joes' military qualifications. That sad fact is evident from many of the file cards, although some slack should be given because they were a toy line, and military schools and qualifications change fairly often.
Larry said that he figured/assumed that all the Joes were Ranger qualified. I've never felt that was any where close to accurate or even plausible... not even all the soldiers serving in the Ranger Regiment are Ranger qualified (some of them are young and are waiting/trying to get a slot to go to Ranger School). I do, however, feel that such a requirement would be necessary for all the combat officers serving on the Joe Team. It's an elite Unit - Delta Force is probably the closest analogous situation - and it would be extremely competitive for an officer to get selected for the Joe Team, mainly because there are so few Officers to begin with. Now, obviously the pilots wouldn't have Ranger tabs, although Wild Bill almost certainly does. And the Medical Officers like Doc wouldn't have a Ranger Tab. Keel Haul and Cutter certainly don't have Ranger Tabs either. But the Combat, Army Officers of the Joe Team would need Ranger Tabs. I don't imagine they would even be considered if they didn't have one... so all the Army Officers on the Joe team, other than Doc, would have a Ranger Tab... including guys like Sub Zero, Psyche-Out, Super Trooper, Rapid Fire, Grid-Iron, etc. All of them would be Ranger qualified, especially the guys who went to West Point. At West Point they drill it into them: if you're not a Ranger, you're not a REAL Combat Leader! It wouldn't surprise me if most of the Infantry Officers had been in the Ranger Regiment at some point, but that may be pushing it just a bit. It's just my opinion, but I don understand a bit about the Officer Corps and I have been around enough to know that an Infantry Officer without a Ranger Tab may never make it to Major. Not earning a Ranger Tab is a career killer, so there just wouldn't be much room for any NAR Officers on the Joe Team. Also, Zulu, about Flint's secondary education... he's a Rhodes Scholar. That means that he has an M.A. in English Literature from "Oxford University". His Bachelors Degree had to have come from somewhere else in the States. That's always been a nagging question: where did Flint go to college before he went to Oxford? My guess is that he went to some private school on the East Coast. Flint has always been portrayed as a little cocky/pretentious in the comic. He could have gone to an Ivy League School, but Duke University would also be a possibility. However, if you want to list him with College Wrestling, Princeton University might actually be the best choice. Just a theory, but you've been so diligent in your attention to detail, I thought you might want to address this issue of education.
