Yeah, very nice updates. Love how you got the trapeze artist into Starduster. Although, Skyduster would probably work better as a name in this case.

I've also wondered this about the Corps: The Army has Special Forces, and beyond that it has Delta and ISA. The Navy has the SEALs, and beyond that it has DEVGRU. The Marines have Force Recon, but why don't they have a Counter-Terrorist Group like Delta or DevGru? It would seem like they would want to have that capability. They seem pretty focused on being self contained and self sufficient. I don't know, I suppose I'm worse than Rumsfeld about dreaming up new ideas for Special Operations units. I just think the Marines could form a very excellent "Delta" equivalent.
... I still think the Coast Guard should have it's own SEAL/Anti-Terrorist Unit. The Department of Homeland Security could really use a Unit like that inside the United States... sort of a Maritime Counterpart to the FBI's HRT. Technically isn't the Marine Corps part of the Navy? Maybe because of DEVGRU the Marines aren't allowed to have their own CT group? I don't know.. Does seem to be something that's lacking. Homeland Security really does need an in-country CT unit.

Have y'all seen this new RoC "PIT Commando"? It is a GREAT figure with a lot of great accessories. It almost seems funny to troop build a SWAT Team, but if people want to use this figure for a Steel Brigade unit, that's a good use.
I was thinking that by itself, not as a troop builder, this figure reminds me of the 12" Rapid Fire figure, who was an Urban Commando. The original 3.75 Rapid Fire was a character with really great/interesting qualifications, but a simply terrible costume. Using this guy as a new Rapid Fire figure could work really well... or with that shield, he could be the new, updated Super Trooper. What do y'all think? Quote:
I don't know if Hama just didn't feel comfortable enough (in terms of knowledge) writing about Marines or if it was a reflection of the USMC being something of an "orphan service" in the spec-ops community up until recently. It was only a few years ago that the Marines finally started having an official role in USSOCOM operations.

If Hasbro did release revamped/updated versions of Rapid Fire and Super Trooper, what would be the best way to treat those characters?
I tend to think that a figure like the PIT Commando would be an excellent update for Rapid Fire. For Super Trooper, something similar would work very well; I suppose I would want him in a different camo pattern. And if they did give us some more British Joes, or rereleased Big Ben, I wouldn't mind seeing a camo pattern like DPM (the British Pattern) and some berets of the proper color. Rapid Fire could work as just about any environment and the codename isn't too cheesy. Bring on the Brits! SAS, SBS, Royal Marines, 7th Paras and the Gurkhas, and add Irish Defense Force and GSG-9 while were at it. But there are so many International Special Forces Units. Quote:
If they're post-1990, I probably won't be making them anytime soon. There are a bunch of 1982-90 Joes who seem to be of indeterminate non-Army service branch based on their original filecards though, and I'll be making a bunch of them into Marines, Airmen, and Seamen. Thunder, Armadillo, Bullhorn & Backstop are the first four examples that come to mind that are likely candidates to be Marines, because their depictions in the filecards and/or comics are pretty open to interpretation with regards to whether they are Army or USMC personnel.
A couple more to add to the growing pile of filecards/images: Payload & Starduster Always thought that the Starduster code name was an odd fit. Sounds like something off of Rainbow Brite. Or it could be a stage name for an "exotic" dancer. 2008's "Skyduster" isn't any better. As always, their filecards can be found by clicking on the Filecard Project link in my signature. |

Good catch. Corrected the name on the post.

Alternatively, I'm thinking of just taking him out of the GI Joe team altogether and making him a part of a separate updated "Action Force" organization I'm still working on developing. This would be a NATO/UN Security Council-mandated group of international anti-terrorism experts who occasionally cross-train with and serve as expert advisers to the Joe team, and where I plan on putting the "international" Joes like Big Ben, Taurus, maybe Backstop, and the non-Russian members of the Oktober Guard (Daina, Schrage, Wong) and of course, the original Palitoy Action Force characters (Gaucho, Stalker, Blades, Quarrel, Scout, Tracker, etc... I'll have to re-name the ones with duplicate Joe names though, maybe use versions of their name written in their respective native languages) Quote:

The thing about the Marines is that it was practically policy that they've held off on designating any unit as a "special operations" unit or having a representative command under the USSOCOM's umbrella. The thinking behind the policy is that the Marine brass consider the whole Corps infantry to be special operations-capable (which is true, to a limited extent), and feel that designating one unit as being "special" above the others devaluates the baseline Marine Corps infantry/rifleman training. That's been changing recently though, with the establishment of MARSOC and the Marine Special Operations School. Last edited by zuludelta; 05-27-2009 at 12:50 PM.. |

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Since a Marine and Ranger are basically equivalent, it can be said the entire Corps is Special Forces.
Which makes it even more odd that there weren't more Marines in the Joe team.

If they brought back Super Trooper as part of the 25th/Modern era line, they would almost be found to bring him back in something close to his original costume, which sucks. But, if they brought him back as part of the RoC line - they could even give him a new code name and just keep his file name; the fans would figure it out - they could update his uniform to something more realistic. Given the fact that we got Skyduster, I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility... may be even as part of a 3 or 5 pack. Same with Claymore. I feel like after Skyduster, anything's possible. ... so where's Low-Light?!

In Vietnam, and in Iraq, Marine and Army Infantry and Armor are almost interchangeable. Some would even say that the Army's 3rd Infantry Div. and the 101st Airborne did a better job in Iraq than the Marine Divisions.

Fellas, is anyone else disappointed that, given the new packaging designs for the Joe line, we've probably seen the last of the classic style filecards?
Those new filecards are poop. |

One could say that the standard Marine rifleman, in terms of skills acquired in baseline training, is equivalent to an Air Assault and Sharpshooter-qualified Army infantryman. Yeah, it does. Last edited by zuludelta; 05-27-2009 at 01:06 PM.. Reason: edited for clarity and spelling |

They're growing on me. I like the realistic artwork for the faces. I'm more disappointed that we're losing the filecards and getting that crap that's on the back of the RoC cards.
To be honest, I never thought the original packaging was all that great and seeing it alongside newer stuff in the stores, it just didn't pop. So naw, the new packaging doesn't bother me. It's the damn filecards...
