He was one of the last Joes I bought as a kid and he pretty much became my Joe-verse's main character. He was second in command of the team under Hawk and worked closely with Beach Head. They had sort of your typical Hollywood lieutenant/sergeant dynamic. They clash at first, but eventually develop a mutual respect. Not that original, I know. But hey, I was a kid. |

Falcon also became one of my favorites. Flint and Falcon, along with Beachhead, were probably my main Joes.

but here's why I think UNC Chapel Hill. First it's a great school with a great ROTC program. Second, it's public and Falcon comes from an Army family; he's second generation Special Forces, so money doesn't grow on trees. Third, it's less than 2 hours from Ft. Bragg, the home of Special Forces, where his family might presumably be stationed. He could have gone down for some "extra training" on the weekends with his Dad's Group... and West Point simply would not allow/provide for that. UNC is a great school. Solid ROTC, and it's one of the Top five Public Universities in the country. In the Comic, Falcon was always protrayed as pretty level headed. Not so in the Cartoon, but that's neither here nor there. Just my two cents.

Zuludelta, I also noticed that there is no mention of Spirit's Ph.D. on his file card. That interested me very much. I like the uniform you have him. I reminds me of his Sigma 6 uniform. Did you intend to change Spirit, and not make him a psychologist anymore? If so, there in a Native American Ranger like that: Dart.
Also, thanks for bringing his filecard up. I've been meaning to update it (I'd forgotten his background as a social worker/social sciences professional in the original filecard). I'll try and add his education information later today. |

This is purely speculation on my part, but considering that GM is selling off the Hummer brand and has no plans to make them in 2010, and that GM will most likely be bankrupt by August, I doubt there's going to be a big push of advertising the Hummer in the Joe movie.
I still hope to see a Hummer or two in the line for Joes, however. And my Alley Vipers will most definitely be riding in that Cobra H2. I'm also glad someone else is excited about those Cobra Hummers... I guess most people think they're ugly, but I've got about 21 Alley Vipers looking for quality transportation. And since when have Alley Vipers cared about looks? Heck, they'll probably paint those new Cobra Hummers orange and blue. It's like the Gator Nation is running the Alley Viper Corps.

Spirit has a PhD? And he's a psychologist? When did this happen? And if it's a DDP thing, I hope you don't mind if I ignore that element, I was just never into the stuff they added to the characters... to me, a lot of it (the ones I'm aware of, anyway), lacked a certain degree of tonal authenticity (probably because they freely mixed elements and the "tone" from the comics and the cartoons).

I never did understand the orange and blue for an urban trooper.

I always understood his role as the team's "shrink" (I think that's how it was written in the original filecard) as a colloquial turn-of-phrase and not a reference to an official position. Will have to go back and re-read it.

Looked up Spirit's 1984 filecard on yojoe.com and there's no reference to him holding a PhD or being a psychologist. It does make vague mention of him getting post-secondary education though. I'll need to add that to the filecard.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm using the filecards from 1982 to 1990 as my primary sources (just noticed that the psychologist mention makes its first appearance in the 2005 filecard), so anything added later isn't included in the Filecard Project. Not because I have anything against GI Joe info added post-1990, it's jsut that it's too much infoormation to keep track of and keep updated on for me to realistically complete my project (which will include vehicle blueprints and other details besides the filecards themselves) within a reasonable time frame. Yeah, we talked about the intent of Falcon's character on here a couple of times. I've always seen him as a guy who was being groomed to lead the Joes someday. It's too bad the comic, and especially the cartoon, never treated him that way.
So in 1987 the new line up of characters came out, and the last "leader" figure they made was Flint in '85 and Hawk in '86. It was pretty well established that Gen. Hawk was the overall commander, but field leadership in the cartoon went from Duke (earlier on) and then to Flint (because we've got to sell these new toys, and "Flint" is the new "leader" figure). Enter 1987... Hasbro creates Falcon. He's got a great uniform: one of the best ever. He's got a beret and a shotgun like Flint, and he's named after a bird of prey like Hawk. Conclusion: Falcon is Hasbro's choice for a new field leader. Then something breaks down with the Cartoon series, and the Movie ends the original series. We never see Falcon develop as a character, and by the time the new series starts, Hasbro has moved on to a new "leader" figure: Captain Grid-Iron, cause we've got to sell these toys. But look as all that Hasbro did with Falcon. He has great qualifications, a great uniform and accessories, and he's given command of two Special Units: Night Force and Sonic Fighters. Hasbro evidently thought a lot of Falcon. So, I completely agree with you. Falcon was always intended to be a field commander on par with Duke and Flint... he just never got enough exposure. ... but I still don't think that makes him a West Pointer. Hasbro has produced that character several times, and it has never been mentioned in any of his file cards. 70% of the Army's Officer Corps comes from ROTC... and ROTC cadets have a tendency to think outside the box, a trait they value in Special Forces.
