Sounds more like faults of the cartoon than having anything to do with revealing anything in particular. Hell, by that logic, Destro was portrayed as black on the cartoon. As for his skin tone, there are plenty of hispanics on the lighter end just the same way there are plenty on the darker side.
Zap had comments here and there about his being hispanic. Shipwreck, nope.

Also, Zuludelta, I want to tell you how much I've enjoyed seeing your revamp of the characters. I know it's a labor of love, and you've done a great job. I think a lot of us envision our Joeverse that way, and you've given us visual aides for our imaginations. Thank you. You do excellent work, my friend.

What's more curious is the fact that in the original run, there are only two Joes who are hispanic (Zap and Shipwreck). I thought this was the weird thing about changing Ripcord to a black guy. There are already plenty of black guys in GI Joe already (coming from a black man, so no one get their panties bunched). I don't know about zulu, but when he gets done with this project, I'm going to convert a lot of the 87-90 characters into hispanics to flesh that part of the team out.

And here's some anecdotal evidence to go with the numbers. Slightly less than half of my uncle's US Navy boot camp class back in 1987 was comprised of minorities. Of that number, about half of them were Hispanic-American, a third were black/African-American, and the rest were Asian-American (with a disproportionate number of them being of Filipino descent). Thanks a lot. Really appreciate the sentiment.
Yeah, that is sort of weird. The GI Joe team's make-up isn't too representative of actual armed forces demographics. But hey, it's a toy line first, so I can't really complain. And maybe it was different in the 1980s when the bulk of the toys were being designed, but the ethnic/cultural make-up of the current US Armed Forces, as far as I know, skews heavily towards "visible" minorities, more so than the general population. Almost 40% of all Armed Forces enlisted personnel are census-classified as coming from a minority group (which includes Hispanic-Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Pacific Islander-Americans, among others). Compare that with the general US population which is slightly less heterogeneous, with about 30% demographically classified as belonging to a minority group. And here's some anecdotal evidence to go with the numbers. Slightly less than half of my uncle's US Navy boot camp class back in 1987 was comprised of minorities. Still, the GI Joe numbers underrepresent the current ratios. If we go by the "canon" GI Joe filecards, the majority of the GI Joe population falls outside of those three SOCOM-affiliated communities, so the ~40% minority population that is prevalent in the non-Special Operations community still applies for the bulk of the team. Of course, the simplest explanation for the discrepancy isn't some willful attempt to misrepresent the ethnic make-up of the soldier population. All this can be easily rationalized as a matter of Hasbro designing the toys and the characters they're based on to target a particular market, combined perhaps with a lack of knowledge of Department of Defense demographic data. And again, it doesn't really bother me that the numbers don't add up. GI Joe is rooted in the toys first and foremost, not in some quasi-realistic military simulation (although that's how I'm trying to recreate them with the filecards). Here's Doc (a minor reworking of a McFarlane Toys medic):

Is anyone else excited by the new Dragonfly? I think it has real potential.

As mentioned earlier, we're still not getting a Low-Light any time soon. And I'm really disappointed. The more I think about it the more upset I realize I am. When I think back the all the missions I sent my Joes on as a kid, there are very few that Low-Light wasn't on as a part of the team. He was also the first Joe I ever got, so the character does have a lot of sentimental value for me that I realize every fan does not share.
However, I will still contend that Low-Light is a major fan favorite. There are a lot of Low-Light fans out there, and his role as a sniper is pretty integral to a Special Operations Unit. So this brings up a question for discussion: If Hasbro were to make a Low-Light, how would you guys like to see him represented? Would you want a faithful representation of his original uniform or would you want something different? Maybe a camo uniform? Maybe urban camo? Maybe desert or woodland camo? Would you keep the goggles? Would you keep the watch cap? I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Also, I would really like to see Zuludelta's take on Low-Light. Has that already been done?

First of all, Zulu's reading my mind again. I pictured Doc as being very similar to the original, just with more gear. And look what we got! As to Oliverbox's question re: Low Light, I would like to see him be close to the original, maybe like the DTC version, just with a better mold. I would leave him in the grey and black color scheme, since he's mainly supposed to be operating at night.
