"All members of the ranger regiment are well trained in the basic employment of conventional demolitions. Therefore, there is no need to attach combat engineers to conduct normal demolition missions. Since I'm basing my interpretation of the Joe team partly on a 75th Ranger Regiment battalion, I thought I would follow this dictum as well (at least with the direct action element of the team). I'm beginning to think that discarding Zap's combat engineer background was a tad drastic... I think I'll return it as his secondary specialty (instead of the Artillery branch Fire Support Specialist specialty). EDIT: Just went and updated Zap's filecard. Also managed to catch a typo in Tripwire's filecard in the process. Anyway, feel free to bring up any thing on the filecards that seem to be too much of a diversion from the originals. One of my goals is to update the Joes, but not at the cost of losing the "feel" of the source material. Since I'm less of a fan of some Joes than others, some of the changes I introduce might end up being too much without my noticing it. Quote:
With the original 13 guys, alot of 'em covered two areas of expertise (heck, Zap was even a helicopter pilot). It was probably because Hama/Hasbro wasn't sure if the Joes would be successful enough to make more characters, so if they weren't then all the areas that Hama was concerned with would be covered.

I didn't know that it was a rifle as well (where do the bullets come out? From the angled "mouth?"). Last edited by zuludelta; 05-15-2009 at 12:39 AM.. |

It's a gas sampling probe for detecting chemical warfare contaminants in the atmosphere.
On a related note, I always wondered what the original Airtight toy was equipped with. I figure it was some kind of probe or decontaminant agent dispenser or something, but I don't remember reading the equipment list on the side of the card bubble (I must have torn it or something taking the figure out). EDIT: YoJoe.com isn't that much more helpful. It lists Airtight's accessory as a "black weapon/rifle of some sort" BTW, going through your filecards. I wish you gave the pictures titles. And for Lifeline (the first I noticed) for vehicle qualifications is so low. I can drive up to 25,999 truck with a regular drivers license. So it seems odd, eh? I especially enjoyed the incomplete/presumtive nature of Zartan, Zandar, & Zarana, though don't you think fluent in 22 languages is a bit much?

I don't normally take requests, but a request several weeks ago by tanker Topside to use his mug on any Topside images I would make was somewhat unique, so I took it on. Anyway, here's Topside:
EDIT: picture updated, see next page As always, the filecard can be viewed using the link in my signature. I also slightly tweaked Budo's and Barbecue's filecards. Last edited by zuludelta; 05-15-2009 at 02:55 PM.. |

Anyway, thanks for bringing it up, as it allows me to elaborate on something that may not be so clear to some people reading the filecards. Glad you liked the Zartan siblings filecards. As for the 22 languages thing, I just took that from the original Zartan filecard from 1984. It does seem a bit too much (even my linguistics professor from university spoke a relatively low number of 10 languages by comparison), but hey, that's why he's a world-class assassin and impersonator. I can't really explain Airtight's sniffer logically, that's just what I remember. As far as vehicle qualifications go, as a former EMT I didn't have a special license to drive the ambulances, but I did have to take a class called AVOC-the Ambulance Vehicle Operator's Course. Basically, it teaches one the finer points of manuvering a larger vehicle, such as backing up and driving through a serpentine, among other things. Most, if not all EMTs and firefighters in Maine have to take this class.

I believe that on the package, it was indeed called a "Sniffer". I seem to recall a letter column in the Marvel run that addressed the issue and it could check the air for poisons/toxins(?). It could also fire 5.56mm ammo, as I recall. I just don't remember the issue number.
I specifically remember that and wonder yeah where do the bullets come out of. Where did I hear that? Same thing with the Tele-Vipers as their camera gizmo suppose to have an optional gun attachment. |

I was looking at a photo of a carded Airtight on YoJoe and I noticed that the rear part of his "Sniffer" looks abit like a MG-34 machine gun. Maybe the front part is just an attachment that goes over the barrel of the gun.

There's a reason why there are guys like Clutch and Crankcase. If any old soldier could get behind the wheel of a Hummer for missions, why bother with drivers?
Thanks for qualifying that Zulu, but it's basicaly what I figured. I always figured that it was something like the Police go thru with their patrol cars, they don't have special liscenses (as far as I know), but are given more courses and training in high speed driving and pursuit and such. I always, in my head, figured the Joe drivers had gotten additional training in "combat driving".

I have to say, this one doesn't particularly strike me as Topside. When you changed the uniform that Budo was using, I thought you might have done it to make it look more in the style of Topside's (since Budo's original outfit was ridiculous and they are on the same team in your awesome layout). I'm of the opinion that the lesser known the character and/or the ones who have only had one look should be kept closer to their original designs (as far as it makes sense, i.e. Budo, Quick Kick and Spirit). Where a Rock n Roll could use either a helmet or ballcap, sweater or vest or brown shirt and still be recognizable, characters like Airborne, Topside, Hardball, etc. begin to lose their identities more easily.
Needless to say, all reinterpretations are up to you. But this is the first time I had to look at the name to know who it was. Last edited by Master Thespian; 05-15-2009 at 12:00 PM.. |
