Ah, Zuludelta, you never cease to amaze me. Great job on Lifeline. You kept the basic look but made him much more realistic. Even his education matches up with that of real PJs and EMTs. Whose head did you use? It looks like either Quentin Tarrantino or Ashton Kutcher.

I'm doing a Modern Era/25th custom of that Lifeline using Wild Weasel's body as the base. I think I'm going to do the Barbecue and Shockwave, too. Zuludelta, is Lifeline wearing a buoyancy compensator on his chest?

So just noticed something well playing around in YoJoe.
Hawk, when he becomes Gen. Tomahawk, in 2002, became a Ranger. Just that one time. Became "Stragetic Operations Command" with second being "Artillery", from there after. So for a brief time, Hawk was a Ranger. YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - General Tomahawk I always found it odd that an artillery-man was the leader of a Spec. Ops unit.

That always puzzled me as well. I thought that was cool. I don't know why he wasn't before. I guess when they originally designed the figure, they didn't know where this would go. Hawk probably sounded good and is the real life name of the missle system the MMS is based off. I wonder which came first the figures or the comic. Or did Larry just take his comic idea and meld what he had with the toys that were already ready for production? I mean whoever designed Snake-Eyes is a true genius. Does Larry get all the credit, or is there a Hasbro employee in the basement like, Milton Waddams from Office Space.
That Hawk almost looks like a different character altogether. I headswapped mine with a Spaceshot to create Payload out of his Spacesuit. |

Yeah, the Gen. Tomahawk figures, and even some of the Gen. Abernathy ones, are different enough to use as other characters.
The first filecard of Hawk doesn't call him out as the leader, but he's given the highest rank. So who decided to make him the overall Joe leader?

What was Hama's idea that he used to base GIJoe off of? He had the team that was lead by Fury's kid but who were the characters? If Nick Fury Jr? was meant to be the leader then where did Hawk come from? I saw something where the original idea had Leatherneck and Tunnel-Rat as the original members, but I can't remember who had that link.

Fury Force was the name of it.

There's nothing really that should prevent an Artillery officer from going Special Forces, though. As I've mentioned before, an officer must at least be an O-2(P) (a 1st lieutenant on the promotion list to captain) or preferably a full O-3 qualified in one of the combat arms branches (infantry, field artillery, air defense artillery, army aviation, armor, corps of engineers) to be eligible for Special Forces Officer training. One could easily imagine Hawk starting out as a field artillery or air defense artillery officer and then going Special Forces once he hit captain. Quote:

In 1981 or thereabouts, Hasbro hired Larry Hama to write the filecards for their new "A Real American Hero" line of 1:18 scale GI Joe toys, and he then resurrected and re-designed many of his concepts for Fury Force and used them for the early GI Joe characters. Coincidentally, Fury Force was supposed to be an international anti-terrorist team (SHIELD operates under the direction of the United Nations), so it seems like we've finally come full-circle in a way, what with the upcoming GI Joe: Rise of Cobra live-action film featuring a GI Joe team re-imagined as an international strike force. |

Interesting. Never seen those character sheets before.
So it looks like Hama had Hawk as leader all the time. Wonder what made Hasbro decide to package him with the MMS? Oh, I know an artillery guy can go Special Forces, but just seemed like a weird one for Hawk. Wouldn't a career Ranger had made more sense for the Joes leader?

It's unclear if he was already "Hawk" by then or just plain old Nick Fury, Jr. and "Hawk" was just a codename they came up with later to go with the toy (it's hard to track down the old interviews where Hama explains the origins). But the idea was the same... the "comes from a well-established family" reference in the 1982 filecard was basically a transmuted reference to the character's origins as Nick Fury's son.
True. Which just lends more credence to the theory that the whole artillery thing was just to reconcile the figure's inclusion with the missile playset. Hama certainly never referenced Hawk's background as an artillery officer in the comics (at least not that I remember). |
