I never liked Spirit in the cartoon, but the figure was always one of my favorites.
It's stereotypical though. He's native american, so he's a shaman and he's a tracker. Should have made him a machine gunner.

I hated the character when I was a kid. I was a huge Storm-Shadow fan when I was younger, and it bothered me that he was always getting his ass handed to him by a guy who looked like an animated cigar store indian. I guess both characters were typical of 1980s pop culture stereotyping, but Spirit was just horrible: slow-talking, cryptic, mahogany-coloured, and he came with a freaking eagle. And that breechcloth. That's right up there with Quick-Kick's half-nekkidness as some of the more ridiculous design elements of the "Village People" GI Joe era.

Looking back, some of the figures were pretty sterotypical.
Spirit, Quick Kick

Ah hah! Man, I had totally, totally forgotten those little lists used to be on some of the older cards. I agree, they'd be great on 25th cards.
Spirit was always one of my favorite characters. I was never too worried about his portrayal in the cartoon, because the entire cartoon bothered me. I rather like the concept of the character though, especially given that he's a trained, college educated Social Worker. One of my favorite parts of GI Joe is that it is genuinely diverse and that if you were a kid in the 1980s and wanted to find a GI Joe character that looked like you, you probably could. He or she might be dressed a little strangely, but being there is a step in the right direction. There are undeniable stereotypical elements to the character but I feel he can, and at times does, transcend them. Early on in the DDP run when tracking a BAT through sewers somebody asks him how he can follow it, and he gives some answer about being guided by spirits, then adds, "also, it is leaking oill." I felt it was a great revelation of self awareness on his part. My Spirit carries a Marauder modular M-14 anyway, in addition to his arrow rifle. Which in my world is still a modified marksman weapon. Spirit is one of my favorite 25th figures, regardless of how so many others feel about him.

I just wish he had a better head sculpt. He looks like a sad old indian now.

I always thought it was cool that he wasn't just an ex-gang-member, he was specifically called a "warlord," which sort of put me in mind of some sort of bombed-out Mad Max-type Detroit landscape (and never having been to Detroit, it just confirmed in my mind what I'd already learned about the city from watching Robocop ).

So for work I'm an architect, design buildings. So I figured I'd do something along those lines with Joe. Everyone else does things so much cooler then me that I got jealous.
So I'm designing the Joe HQ and making it "real". Real as in functional. Right now it's going to be just a 3D model and nothing interior-wise. But when I make the barracks area, I'll know how many "beds" I can fit in there. Soon as I can get the right program at home I'll do the floor plans, but for now... So I'm laying out the barracks wing and damn it's huge. I'm making 15x15 enlisted "greenshirt" rooms, 2 per room and with a building that's 180' long x 80' wide and 4 stories tall I can only fit 384 people (2 per bed) but that's also making sure there's room for elevators, stairs, lounges and toilet facilities per floor. No wonder the PITT in IDW's comics is so damn big. It takes alot of space to house all the people that are needed. I'll probably end up doing 2 barracks wings. The other thing is making sure it looks cool but is functional. No giant lasers, lol. But I don't want to get beyond the realm of reality. How would the security be in this place? How would access be controled. There wouldn't be any windows. Things like that. Also, how to make it explosion proof. Luckily for me, the company I work for, we actually do have to design explosion proof walls, so I have some idea how to make it work. I have the idea to make the entire complex including airfield, rifle ranges, etc.. I'm using a program that I'm unfamiliar with, it's a 3D rendering program (basically it's used to make pretty 3D pictures of buildings, lol) so I'm also using this as a "learning" project to learn the program for use at work. Hopefully I'll be able to get the actual program I use at work, which will make the floor plans so much easier. I'll post some WIP pics as I go.

Awesome idea Troynos!
BTW, if you're looking for an easy-to-learn 3D rendering program, try Google Sketch-Up. The basic version can be downloaded for free, and it was expressly designed for use by designers and architects with little experience in CAD or 3D rendering. There are also tons of free models that you can download and use, so, say, if you don't feel like making chairs and tables or light fixtures and whatnot, you can just grab them off Google's 3D Warehouse (which can be accessed from within the program). |
