Zulu your work is awesome of course! I saw you got a suggestion on your teams about adding the code names to some of your characters to help differentiate the ones who closely resemble one another. Now I see why we got guys like Bazooka an Quick kick, so that kids can tell them apart. I was having a little trouble with a few of them since I don't remember who are all the ones you've redone. Plus you have guys who fill out your teams that are not named joes.

Okay, so they make Shipwreck a SEaL but don't give him any SEaL qualifications??? Of course, these days, the SEALs have their own rating, so Shipwreck would now be designated as something like SOC Hector X. Delgado (Chief Special Warfare Operator Hector X. Delgado). |

Yeah, but when Shippy first came out, he had the same filecard and was just a "Sailor". Didn't Torpedo, the first Joe SEaL come out before Shipwreck?
It's the DDP-ization of Shipwreck. They made him a SEaL so he could have a larger presence in the book and have a skillset beyond a sailor, so he could play with the big boys.

Always wondered why they gave him the vague "Sailor" job designation in the first place. That's about as informative as calling Snake-Eyes "soldier." A guy like Shipwreck, given what we know about him (minus the SEAL stuff that DDP added later), should have been called something more specific than "sailor," like say, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist or Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist. |

Cause a kid in the mid-'80s isn't going to know what that means. They at least can get an idea of what a Sailor is. Nowadays it'd just be "Naval Commando" or "Naval Assault Specialist" which is what they have for the RoC Shipwreck.

Of course, they could have done worse and labeled him a "seaman," opening up the potential for a lot of giggling and uncomfortable explanations by parents as to why the punchline to the joke "what's long and hard and full of seamen?" is supposed to be funny. |

Very true. As it was, Snow Job got more than enough laughs, at least on my particular schoolyard.

We also tried to use "crap" as much as we could, leading to classic witticisms like Craptor and Muskrap. Last edited by zuludelta; 04-28-2009 at 04:17 PM.. |

Has anyone ever wondered about some of the more disappointing MOS'? Like Social Services, Special Services, Chef, Refrigerator Repairman? I always felt cheated when we got one of those. Not these would not be necessary, but seem a little boring so why? Even the Finance ones sound silly. I wonder how many of the Joes are suited for desk jobs?

New stuff (click on the pictures to read the filecards):
Notes: Finally have a Quick-Kick I'm mostly satisfied with. Replaced his shuriken sash with a shoulder holster. Originally I was going to replace the Japanese motif on his hachimaki (samurai headband) with the unit trim of the US Army Element Special Operations Command Korea (Quick-Kick's half-Korean, and I figure it would make sense for him to have been assigned at some point to SOCKOR, if only as a liaison or linguist), but changed it last-minute to the flag motif of the now-defunct Ryukyu Kingdom (what is now known as Okinawa prefecture in Japan). I figure by using the image from a no-longer-existing nation that had strong ties with both Japan and Korea (as well as China, Taiwan, and most of Southeast Asia), he doesn't display any real bias between his twin Japanese and Korean heritage (Japan and Korea's shared history is still a touchy matter for many) and it also reflects his proficiency in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese martial arts. As for Deep-Six, I wanted to keep the bulky look of the original toy, but I couldn't find any reason why the Joe team would need a Navy Fleet Diver assigned to it full-time. In the end, I re-conceptualized him as a Navy EOD Technician/EOD Diver, witht he bulky saturation diving suit replaced by an equally bulky but much more appropriate-in-a-direct-action-context bomb disposal suit. |

Finance Personnel Clerk Typist? Doesn't make the idea of those MOSes any more exciting or "cool" (in terms of being toy design-friendly), though. Off the top of my head, the GI Joes with administrative-themed secondary MOSes listed in their original filecards: - Alpine (Finance) - Heavy Metal (Finance) - Jinx (Finance) - Lady Jaye (Personnel/Human Resources Clerk) - Fast-Draw (Administrative Clerk) - Wildcard (Chaplain's Assistant) - Muskrat (Social Services) Last edited by zuludelta; 04-28-2009 at 11:34 PM.. |
