I don't think I've ever read any of Ennis' military books. I like his and Darick Robertson's The Boys. Good stuff that.

Totally agree Zulu. I was actuallt taken aback when I read Ennis's War stories fro Vertigo. It was very sophisticated and nuanced as compared to his Hitman and Kev which he was doing at the time.
I want to get his Battlefields stuff from Dynamite but waiting for the trade. I've always had 2 writers I wanted to see write the Joes. One was Chuck Dixon so I got my wish. The other was former Stormwatch Achilles writer Micah Ian Wright. His stuff was very complex and realistic. Problem was he lied about his prior military service and was forced out of the book (not sure about the industry). It'd be nice to see him back. Surely his crimes are nowhere near the travesties committed by oh say Rob Liefeld |

I like Wright's Stormwatch: Team Achilles ALOT. Was a great series.
I never did understand why he had to leave. So he said he was a former Ranger. Didn't affect how I thought about the series. It was one of my favorites well it lasted. Was a great look at normal humans having to deal with superhumans.

I'm guessing he's persona non grata at most major comic book publishers these days. He's certainly not the first person to lie about his credentials to inflate his professional reputation, and he won't be the last, but he was found out (and in particularly scandalous fashion), and as it happens with these types of things, he's been made an example of. Which is really unfortunate, because he did have the makings of a good military fiction writer. Last edited by zuludelta; 04-27-2009 at 01:14 PM.. Reason: edited for grammar and spelling |

He had lied about his service to help get the gig and (if I remember right) it was also used to help market Stormwatch: Team Achilles as being "more realistic" because it was written by a guy that was an insider.
It makes that the series was actually that good even more remarkable that he wasn't an insider. I really miss that series. That was a great series. I had it ranked right up there with Ellis' Stormwatch run.

Just one new image/filecard for today, and it's of Torpedo (click on the picture to read the filecard):
There are a bunch of things I don't like with how Torpedo has been depicted in toy form over the years. For one thing, it seems like the toy designers focus too much on the underwater demolitions aspect of the SEALs, almost always outfitting Torpedo in a wetsuit and giving him odd underwater-themed weapons (seriously, a spear gun? Is he going grouper fishing?). And even then, they get the breathing equipment wrong... Torpedo (and fellow SEAL Wet-Suit) has always been shown using SCUBA gear slung over his back, where a more practical option would be a rebreather set attached via a chest harness, a much stealthier alternative (it doesn't send out bubbles to the surface, unlike SCUBA gear). The second thing is that Torpedo, in any prior toy incarnation, looks nothing like a Hawaii native. Granted, having a surname of "Leialoha" doesn't preclude one from having Caucasian/European features, but it just seems an odd design choice, offhand. Anyway, I've tried to create an image of Torpedo more in line with how I think he should be depicted. He still has a wet-suit/dry-suit on in this version, just to keep ties with the original design (although I'd like to think that it's one that wouldn't look too out of place worn alongside his more conventionally attired teammates), but I've dispensed with the underwater breathing gear and spear gun, giving him a flotation vest and a Mk 18 Mod 0 assault rifle (an M4A1 modified by the NSWC-Crane guys for use by the Navy's SpecWar operators) to emphasize the SEAL's multi-environment operational capability and to make him look like a guy who's also a threat on land as much as he is in the water. |

Whoa I've been gone for about a week in Barcelona so it took me a whole day to catch up on the Thread.
Zulu your work is awesome of course! I saw you got a suggestion on your teams about adding the code names to some of your characters to help differentiate the ones who closely resemble one another. Now I see why we got guys like Bazooka an Quick kick, so that kids can tell them apart. I was having a little trouble with a few of them since I don't remember who are all the ones you've redone. Plus you have guys who fill out your teams that are not named joes. But I love the Support team, I wasn't expecting to see that. Can't wait for the Command Element to come together. Fogger I'm sorry to hear about the knee. Ouch! get well soon, since we love having you on here. I love to see all the new contributors we've gotten in the last week that very cool I hope everyone feels welcome to share or ask questions. Back to work I guess. |
