I don't know why but I always thought he was an Ivy League (Yale, Cornell, Princeton, Brown, etc.) grad. I thought it was mentioned in his filecards but looking them up, apparently it wasn't. Makes me wonder if it was mentioned somewhere else, like in the comics or in the cartoon, or if I just imagined it.

I don't think Flint's schooling was mentioned. I think we talked about here on the thread here, about which school he attended and how he went on to become a Rhodes Scholar.
I love Resolute. Wow...

I know it's been brought up in this thread before, but I always wondered which characters were the functional and/or aesthetic successors of the older Joes. In particular, I think many of the newly-introduced 1986 Joes were intentionally designed as updates/analogues of the 1982-1983 releases. In some cases, I think they might have been intended to be updated versions of the older characters all along, but given a name change at some point in the design process (this, of course, discounts 1986 releases such as "bomber jacket" Hawk and the M240-wielding Roadblock, who were literal updates of their earlier incarnations).
The pairings: Snow-Job (1983) = Iceberg (1986) Torpedo (1983) = Wet-Suit (1986) Stalker/Snake-Eyes (1982) = Beach Head (1986) Flash (1982) = Sci-Fi (1986) Ace (1983) = Slip-stream (1986) Gung-Ho (1983) = Leatherneck (1986) Breaker (1982) = Dial-Tone (1986) Doc (1983) = Lifeline (1986) |

Short-Fuze = Downtown (which Downtown may have been meant as a new version Short-Fuze, they jsut changed the name, both are blond).
Rock 'n Roll - Roadblock - Repeater Tripwire - Lightfoot Steeler - Heavy Metal Clutch - Crankcase - Skidmark Zap - Bazooka Grunt - Footloose

In some cases, it seems like the difference is mostly in name and birthplace only... take Gung-ho and Leatherneck for instance: both are Gunnery Sergeants (E-7s), wear patrol caps, sport moustaches, have a Recondo school background, and serve as instructors in their secondary specialty. Even their personalities are roughly the same if you go solely by the flavour text in their filecards.

Here are two more Marines to add to the Joe roster (click on the pictures to view the filecards):
Yeah, I know Muskrat wasn't a Marine originally, but I figured the Joes need some more branch diversity. Besides, I've always associated the boonie hat with the Marines and the SEALs. |

Muskrat kicks ass. Always one of my favorites that never got much "screen time".
I like Mainframe. Looks pretty cool.

I love Muskrat, and yes, he works just fine as a marine. I'd love to see a 25th Muskrat but I don't hold out much hope.

I think we talked about it on this thread before, but I'm pretty sure Hama was always in favor of updating characters rather than creating new ones with similar jobs. Hasbro vetoed him almost every time. I believe one of Footloose's prototype names was Grunt, obviously indicating who he was originally meant to be.
For me, and I imagine most of you guys are the same, I just incorporated the new guys with the old guys. I didn't really see them as replacements. Wet Suit didn't take Torpedo's place, they just worked together. Roadblock and Rock N Roll either paired up or were assigned as heavy gunners for two different missions. And Doc and Lifeline may have filled the same role from a dramatic standpoint, but their jobs are very different. Doc was always my team's medical officer. He's an M.D. and a surgeon. Kind of Joe's answer to Hawkeye Pierce to me. Lifeline was a field medic. He'd patch guys up and get them back to base so Doc could go to work. |
