I guess it's because GSG-9 didn't really have a lot of public traction back in the day. Heck, they're still relatively unknown outside of military circles, people who read up on politics, and militaria hobbyists, unlike say, Delta Force or the SAS. Offhand, I think the "public knowledge ranking" of the various spec-ops military/gendarmerie/police units around the world goes something like this, at least from the people I've talked to (with the most publicly known at the head of the list):
- British SAS - US Army Special Forces - US Army Rangers - US Navy SEALs - Russian Spetsnaz - German GSG-9 - French GIGN - Australian SAS - Israeli Sayeret Matkal - Hong Kong SDU - German KSK Granted, my perspective probably greatly differs from those living in the US.

As to who's go to Britain for SAS training..
I'd say Flint, Duke, Stalker, Rapid Fire, Super Trooper, Claymore, Falcon. Here's a question, Scarlett's talks about her receiving Ranger training, but we know women aren't allowed into the Rangers. Lady Jaye is Airborne and Ranger qualfied as well. So where/how did they receiver their training? Post-Joe? Pre-Joe? Would being on the Joe team allow them to bypass the "no women" rule? What training did they have pre-Joe? Scarlett's been to Marine Sniper School. That's kind of odd as she's received Army Ranger Training and Marine Sniper Training? Makes it look like she didn't go thru the ordinary channels to receive her training, had special exceptions. Both would be excellant candidates to have gone and trained with the Irish Army Ranger Wing (which is patterned after the US Rangers and accepts women). This would work even better for Lady Jaye since her card says she spent alot of time in Dublin. Scarlett is Irish as well, Shana O'Hara is definately an Irish name as well. So both could have spent some time with the Irish ARW.

I think the "no women" rule was bypassed just to get some gender diversity on the team - I'm not sure you could really justify it in the real world. That being said, you could always have had the females get their training after joining the Joes.

Can say that well in Dublin, Lady Jaye received Irish ARW training. That's equivalent to Ranger training.

Yeah, it's interesting how many MIT grads there are. It's obviously an excellent Engineering school, but Grunt is the only Georgia Tech grad, and it's also a great school with a good ROTC program. And no one is from Virginia Tech... their Corps of Cadets is well known. Cal Tech and Cal Poly are not represented at all. Weird. If any school could give MIT a run for it's money it's Cal Tech.
West Point has several Grads, but the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy only have one Representative. VMI is Gen. Flagg's Alma Mater, but no Joe is from the Citadel... that's very strange to me. It would be really nice to see a few colleges represented, especially ones with strong military ties. Yeah that has always been surprising to me we don't get me military acadamies represented. Or when they get addtional degrees when they take classes at some university to earn a graduate degree. I think if anything it sends the right message to the 10 year old that reads that card. By adding that small detail Hasbro an gain an army of fans literally. I was testing you about Grunt. I knew you had to know better, |

Nope. Sayeret Matkal is a part of the IDF (Israeli Defense Force), Mossad is part of the government's intelligence service (they're sort of like the Israeli CIA). I was going to list Mossad, because they are well known, at least as embedded in the pop cultural consciousness as Russia's Spetsnaz, but balked at the last second before posting because I wanted to limit my list to special military, gendarmerie, and police units.

I really hope that the front-paged Resolute figures aren't just Hasbro messing with us, and are indicative of things to come. I really want new Resolute figures after seeing the first five parts.

Here's one of the less popular Joes (click on the picture to view the filecard):
Decided to make him a Marine, since the USMC is the primary user of the MGL (multi-shot grenade launcher). Always thought that the sports jersey Joes kind of looked goofy (Bazooka, Red Dog, Hardball, Capt. Grid-Iron-- ugh! -- ) but taking away that element would be straying too far from the original design in my opinion. Best I could manage was to make it more relevant to the original character (I gave him a Syracuse Chiefs jersey... it did mention in his old filecard that he played in the minor leagues, and he is from central New York state). Also, here's an updated Leatherneck file card... I want to make him a bit more special operations oriented, but at the same time, I didn't want to make him a reconnaissance marine and be a duplicate of Gung-Ho: Leatherneck filecard (updated) I'm also reposting links to the organizational diagrams I posted previously, as well as a screenie of the text file for the COmmand Element. The pics are all temporary, and I'll be updating them as well as the ranks when I finish making all the updated digitalimages of the 1982-1988 Joes: Command Element organizational structure (text only) Direct Action Element organizational structure Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance Element organizational structure Combined Support Element organizational structure (updated) Last edited by zuludelta; 04-20-2009 at 04:39 PM.. |
