I always figured that it meant that a Joe could grab any weapon at hand and be just as lethal with it as the standard issue Joe weapon. I took it to mean that they had passing knowledge on the type of ammunition required (# of rounds in the clip, caliber), type of weapon (auto, semi), and basic maintenance.

Just a little something I saw on a re-run of NCIS the other night. There was an agent for ATF named Courtney Krieger, and a murdered guy was named Marvin Hinton. I picked up one or two other Joe references but can't remember them. Someone was reading file cards for that episode.

I think it depends on how you define expert. As mentioned before, it can be the ability to fire the weapon accurately. Or, it can be like the Special Forces Weapon Sgt.'s or Armorers, where you include maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, limited gunsmithing and being able to train others on the weapon system.

That's another reason I passed on including flavour text (along with space-saving considerations). It's hard to write flavour text that will please every fan of the character (since we all have our ideas about how a character should be), and what may be cheesy or plain corny to some might be pitch-perfect for others.
Now looking back at old file cards, There seems to be the beginning sentence in the first section that alludes to why they joined and it gives a very brief background. I always liked that part. The bottom section where Hawk or someone else puts in their two cents gets pretty cheesy no matter what, but I do remember liking that as a kid. But by 87 when the format changes I was much older so I didn't buy into it as much. I actually like the ones better for example when someone is quoted as saying "All Marines are crazy but Gung-Ho is the hairiest, Scariest, craziest Jarhead...." As I like the realism more now I would almost prefer all cards to read like Zulu's example, but without some character presented they differ little from Bravo team figures or Corps figures. Still we got a lot of bad ones over the years as evidence that it is not the easiest thing to do, without being cheesy. Last edited by Loose Cannon; 04-07-2009 at 02:41 PM.. |

Also, here's Hawk (with accompanying filecard):
Most of you will probably take issue with the fact that I "demoted" Hawk back to his original colonel rank in my filecard, but to me, it always seemed an odd thing for a general to be so close to the action. Sure, he's a guy that leads by example and all, but putting a general on the frontlines isn't brave or inspirational, it's just an unnecessary risk. Besides, I always felt that the "stars" (the generals) as Larry Hama wrote them were almost like secondary villains in the comics (although not at all surprising, since the comic was written by a former enlisted man ), what with their scheming and backdoor deals and occasional disregard for their soldiers' welfare. Having Hawk join them in the upper echelons of the DoD just seems to go against the idea of what the Joes represent to me. |
