Thanks for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it and I'll try to incorporate the ones that are in line with my own sensibilities. Last edited by zuludelta; 04-06-2009 at 12:01 PM.. |

Updated versions of some of the last few images I posted, taking into consideration some of thunderdan19's suggestions (click on the Joe's name to view the pic):
Beach Head notes: adjusted the cut of balaclava and recoloured the M4 as per thunderdan's suggestions. Still kept the brown all-weather boots, though. Recondo notes: fixed head proportions Leatherneck notes: added M203 grenade launcher to his M4 Iceberg notes: added blue-grey tinting to his accessories to better match his original toy colours. Flint notes: beefed up his forearms. Still kept the shotgun, though, despite thunderdan's suggestion to use an M4 Masterkey (assault rifle + underbarrel shotgun combo). It's an excellent suggestion, but in my mind, the pistol-grip shotgun is an important element of Flint's visual make-up, and losing that element is just a step too far in terms of improvisation for me with regards to redesigning the character. Also, some new images of the Joe team's anti-armor specialists, Bazooka and Zap: notes: they're both armed with the Carl Gustaf 84mm recoilless rifle, known in the US Army and USMC as the M3 MAAWS (Multi-role Anti-armor/Anti-personnel Weapon System). It's also known by its other name, M3 RAWS (Ranger Anti-tank Weapon System) in USSOCOM equipment listings. I debated with myself for a while on how to depict Bazooka... the football jersey is a bit goofy, but outfitting him in standard ACU camo would be too much of a departure from his most recognizable look, IMO (I know there was a woodland camo version of Bazooka a few years ago, but for most people, Bazooka will always be the guy in the red jersey). In the end, I went with the jersey, but tried to make it relevant to the character... I switched the jersey colours from the orignal red and blue to maroon and gold, which are the official colours of the University of Minnesota football team (the Golden Gophers). Bazooka, according to his filecard, is from Hibbing, Minnesota; and a plausible explanation for him wearing a football jersey to battle is a sense of loyalty to his alma mater and maybe just a little superstition (you know how some athletes always wear their "lucky" jerseys or jock straps or socks or whatever to big games). I figure an elite unit like the Joes would tolerate some manner of of generally harmless eccentricity in one of their premier anti-armor specialists. Zuludelta, you do great work. Regarding Bazooka, have you seen GI Joe 4 yet? He's shown in "traditional" gear with a red and blue "14" patch on one of his sleeves. Also, could you do a version of Lifeline, if you haven't already? I'd love to see it!

I quickly skimmed through GI Joe #4 when I was visiting my brother's place this weekend... must have missed the Bazooka appearance (I'm mainly sticking to reading GI Joe: Origins and GI Joe: Cobra for now... I'm not enjoying the art and the dialogue isn't working for me on the main Joe title). I plan on doing Lifeline eventually. He was always one of my favourites even though I never owned the toy (Special Missions #4 is one of my favourite character-focused Joe stories). The difficulty with his costume/uniform is translating the design into a contemporary and believable context (the bright red jumpsuit is problematic) while still retaining identifiable elements of the original design. |

I was just going to bring this up. But Damn that's what a file card should look like. Those are excellent. You don't have much in the way of personal histories for any of these characters or any actions they may have participated in. I know some people like to see that aspect on the file cards. I know I enjoy it to some degree as well, but I was always looking for the meat and potatoes part of the file card. This is outstanding. How did you decide on which courses to add? I love the parts with the JFK training school. most likely they all would need to spend some time there, but its an awesome update to how their cards should read. I guess the problem with the filecards was that there just is only so much room. What I wanted to find out is what would be considered the best filecards ever produced? What makes a good file card? I honestly wish they all followed a similar construction. Top Section: The basic Identifiers. (Zulu has a great take on Shipwreck though since it's not quite the same in the navy. Plus the Unique Identifiers that were never a part of our original file cards, such as the case of Gung-Ho.) Middle Section: Training and Expertise, Actions participated in. Bottom Section: a Little history to give you a sense of the character. I'm not sure how cheesy this can or should get. Lets look at Claymore for example: YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Claymore He has 4 sections now the 2nd and 3rd are a combination of training, Background, and Actions. To me he would be the epitome of the perfect Filecard. Yet it still has flaws, but it embodies what I want to see in a file card. Now see Bombstrike who is near the bottom in my opinion: YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Bombstrike WTF? She may not even be the worst. The Battle Corps years were also different in that they gave you a breakdown of some of the equipment they were carrying/wearing plus a vehicle specialty. Zuludelta you did it right on your Stalker filecard. Every Joe should have some sort of vehicle proficiency even if it's just the Awestriker. Here's Barricade as an example: YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Barricade I kind of liked the bottom section, but then again, if the weapons he is carrying are so unidentifiable maybe we're getting into La-La land. I need to come up with my top 10 list. |

While all that stuff on the filecards is cool, I personally still enjoy the Hama approach that, in addition to the specialized military stuff, gives you some sense of personality and history, and sometimes what some of the other members of the team think of them.
I have to go ahead and agree with Larry Hama's reply on Claymore's filecard, as well.

The filecards kick ass.
Zap doesn't look latino. That's the only comment on him.

BR's doesn't even tell you what branch he was in and there's so much confusing elements to him that we've spent alot of time trying to nail down his service and haven't been able to. The Battlecorps stuff was horrible with the weapons because it was all made up.

They go downhill pretty fast after 85, but a couple of good ones:
