I always thought Shipwreck had a lot of potential. The way his original filecard was written, it seems like Hama imagined him to be a Special Boat Unit member back in the Vietnam War (as evidenced by the line about him engaging in hand-to-hand combat against river pirates and insrugents in the Mekong Delta). SBUs were the precursors of today's SWCCs (Special Warfare Combat Crewmen), the Navy's small-craft based special warfare operators.

He should have been a SBU and now a SWCC, not a SEaL. SWCC have alot of the same training as SEaLs anyways, so it would have worked for a guy called Shipwreck.

I want to save the big Hama question for last:
"What would have been different if there had been no Hasbro interference and not having to 'sell the toys'?" For the next question, would like something Cobra related. The only Snake-Eyes question I can think of would be: "How much influence did Hasbro have over making Snake-Eyes such a focal point of the comic series? Why is his name 'classified' and was he always envisioned as a ninja or did that evolve over time?" |

Well when I was in the Navy I never had a Polly. I was very upset i thought all navy people had a Polly. That is one reason I signed up.

Wow, thanks for this link about Hama, zuludelta. http://goodcomics.comicbookresources...s-revealed-32/
That's good stuff. So then, I'm now questioning what was stated earlier in this thread--that Hama was given the character designs with titles and rank already assigned and told to develop them. Why would the artists come up with the specialty and rank for Duke, Snake and Stalker? I suppose this may have still happened, but if these guys were originally based off Hama's ideas, then wouldn't he have had more say about these details. I'm confused. Maybe we could ask him to clear this up. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 03-24-2009 at 10:55 AM.. |

For the most part, I agree with you there, although my favourite GI Joe comics storyline is still probably the whole botched Borovia story with Stalker, Outback, Snow-Job, and Quick-Kick. That's where GI Joe "grew up" for me (and with me). It was just a comic book, but I think it really got me to start thinking about how messed up the world of politics can be when you've got different branches of a government working at cross-purposes (up until that point, not even my primary school civics and history teachers could get me to care about things like that).
I couldn't get into the DDP stuff. Tried to at various points, but I just couldn't. Not a slam against their output, but there was something about the quality of their GI Joe work that failed to appeal to my sensibilities both as a GI Joe fan and a lifelong comic book reader. I'm sure their hearts were in the right place as long-time GI Joe fans themselves, though. |

So do you guys use the jet-packs in your Joeverse?
Aside from issue #1, I can't remember the J.U.M.P. ever appearing in a comic. There was that jetpack that Clutch's friend made (forced) for Cobra, but beyond that it was CLAWs or propellor gliders. Just hit me today that those were the only times the JUMP was used, and jet-pack troopers have been a big part of the toyline. Stalker (2x), Duke (2x) and Starduster have all come with 'em in the Modern Era. Grand Slam and Starduster back in vintage days. Weird. |
