I get the DDP and the Image run mixed, well rather I call it all DDP. But when compared to Marvel, there is almost no humor involved. So I guess I mean darker in that sense. Larry always had a play on words or someone making fun of someone. There was always a sly grin on my face when I read the Marvel run.

I always figured Special Missions to be more of how he really wanted Joe to be.
Nth Man was a great series. I have 'em all, need to go back and reread 'em at some point. But without Hasbro: would ninjas have been there as much? would Duke have been there? Stuff like that. You know, Duke was never really a central figure in the marvel run. It was Flint more then Duke, and Duke was taking orders from Falcon on a mission once (the one that started the whole Trucial Abysmia slaughter). Duke was really the cartoon pushing him forward and then DDP took up that slack. I always thought DDP went to far in trying to integrate the cartoon and the comic (Shipwreck, Duke..) In all honesty, when I think of Duke and Flint I think of their cartoon personalities. Certainly the cartoon can't be cannon, but in so far as how I think of these characters (The voices I hear, etc.) I think of the cartoon. Flint was pretty arrogant in the comic, and Duke was worthless.

I couldn't even make it thru the first Image mini-series. I've since gone back and read it all.
I wouldn't even call it darker. It wasn't more light hearted, but it definately wasn' darker. America's Elite was, but the main Joe series wasn't. They did do good in incorporating all the Joes, and as many as they good. I wonder how they would have done if they had been doing it during the Marvel years with new releases to add in all the time. It's alot easier to do with all the characters are there at the start. They did give us Mayday, so they have that going for 'em. Kamakura isn't bad either. Wraith didn't live up to the hype they tried to create for him. He was supposed to be such a bad-ass that he goes toe to toe with Snake-Eyes and wins, but the Baroness takes him out permenantly? It just didn't do it for me. Glad they lost the liscense.

That's pretty cool. I didn't know that Delta used codenames.
The beeper thing reminds me of a part of the old movie Navy SEaLs (how accurate was that movie anyways??). They're at the wedding of the 2iC and the beepers go off and they all have to up and leave right then and there. |

So do you guys use the jet-packs in your Joeverse?
Aside from issue #1, I can't remember the J.U.M.P. ever appearing in a comic. There was that jetpack that Clutch's friend made (forced) for Cobra, but beyond that it was CLAWs or propellor gliders. Just hit me today that those were the only times the JUMP was used, and jet-pack troopers have been a big part of the toyline. Stalker (2x), Duke (2x) and Starduster have all come with 'em in the Modern Era. Grand Slam and Starduster back in vintage days. Weird.

Yeah. Great flick. Loved Bill Paxton as "God".

I don't ever recall it happening (not that I wanted it to happen... always thought the idea of a domesticated pet eagle was a bit too goofy). And that bird never gets a mention on any Spirit filecard as far as I can remember, and he's not even on any of the card art. It seems like outside of the cartoon, Freedom never existed. |

Nice observation. I guess jet packs were one of the things, like Cobra-La, where Hama possibly drew the line (with the exception of that 1st issue appearance).

I think you're right. Aside from Timber (who only EVER stayed at Snake-Eyes' cabin) the "pets" never made an appearance. Spearhead's bobcat "Max" appeared in the one issue that Spearhead was in, one of the Special Missions.

They use it a a few other times in the early issues. Stalker uses it in issue #7 (2nd October Guard issue) to do a recon of the Cobra stronghold, and again in issue #8 to coordinate the outer ring defenses of the Space Shuttle.

Speaking of odd mentions in file cards, has anyone else gotten the new G.I.Joe five pack? Lady Jaye's filecard has something odd: "Her exceptional skill with the crossbow has also earned her the admiration of her team - and even the begrudging respect of COBRA troopers." Lady Jaye's skill with a crossbow?
