Ah, when you pose the question that way... I bet he would have gone with a much, much smaller cast, at the very least.
Also, re-reading his replies in the letters pages ("Postbox: The Pit") from the classic Marvel comics as an adult, by around issue #60 or so, it really seems like Hama was beginning to chafe under all the creative controls and editorial mandates set by Hasbro and the unreasonable demands of the toy fans on one side, and the older fans clamouring for "realism" on the other. Yeah, that's why I've always wondered if he didn't have new figures/vehicles to showcase every year, Hasbro pushing things like Ninja Force and such... how different would Joe have been?

I vaguely remember reading/hearing about a story several years ago (so the veracity is suspect at best), that Hama threatened to quit writing the comic when Hasbro tried to get him to write Cobra-La into the comic. Hasbro wisely backed off.
It may or may not be true, but it totally sounds like something that could have happened. |

I always thought of his work on the vastly underrated Nth Man as sort of the metaphysical "successor" to GI Joe, and I think it reflected, in some ways, what the GI Joe comic would have turned out like if it weren't so tied intrinsically to the concerns of advertising a toy line. I think it's where he explored topics that he couldn't tackle using licensed characters (whether they were Hasbro's or Marvel's). It always felt to me that there was a lot of thematic overlap between Nth Man and some of the more introspective and philosophically-minded Storm-Shadow meanderings during the issue #60something - #80something stretch and the latter Special Missions issues (my favourite sub-sections of Hama's original GI Joe work).

I always figured Special Missions to be more of how he really wanted Joe to be.
Nth Man was a great series. I have 'em all, need to go back and reread 'em at some point. But without Hasbro: would ninjas have been there as much? would Duke have been there? Stuff like that. You know, Duke was never really a central figure in the marvel run. It was Flint more then Duke, and Duke was taking orders from Falcon on a mission once (the one that started the whole Trucial Abysmia slaughter). Duke was really the cartoon pushing him forward and then DDP took up that slack. I always thought DDP went to far in trying to integrate the cartoon and the comic (Shipwreck, Duke..)

I couldn't get into the DDP stuff. Tried to at various points, but I just couldn't. Not a slam against their output, but there was something about the quality of their GI Joe work that failed to appeal to my sensibilities both as a GI Joe fan and a lifelong comic book reader. I'm sure their hearts were in the right place as long-time GI Joe fans themselves, though. |

I think the DDP guys, at least Josh Blaylock, were more fans of the cartoon then the comic. The DDP comic was more like the cartoon then anything, they were the ones that created the Greenshirt concept, which was something the cartoon had. They also gave Shipwreck more of a role, which he had in the cartoon.

I think you're right about them being cartoon fans. I did enjoyed most of the Devil's due stuff. It was darker and they spent a lot of effort trying to incorporate every character in GIJoe. I liked most of the cobra's they created. they may have tried to do too much and felt some pressure to rush things. They did a lot of things to certain characters that I didn't want to see done. Keeping Hawk in a wheel-Chair bothered me the most. but I was happy to have my joe fix.

I couldn't even make it thru the first Image mini-series. I've since gone back and read it all.
I wouldn't even call it darker. It wasn't more light hearted, but it definately wasn' darker. America's Elite was, but the main Joe series wasn't. They did do good in incorporating all the Joes, and as many as they good. I wonder how they would have done if they had been doing it during the Marvel years with new releases to add in all the time. It's alot easier to do with all the characters are there at the start. They did give us Mayday, so they have that going for 'em. Kamakura isn't bad either. Wraith didn't live up to the hype they tried to create for him. He was supposed to be such a bad-ass that he goes toe to toe with Snake-Eyes and wins, but the Baroness takes him out permenantly? It just didn't do it for me. Glad they lost the liscense.

I get the DDP and the Image run mixed, well rather I call it all DDP. But when compared to Marvel, there is almost no humor involved. So I guess I mean darker in that sense. Larry always had a play on words or someone making fun of someone. There was always a sly grin on my face when I read the Marvel run.
