It seems Hama is interested in character motivations, so let's start there. What do we want to know about Cobra characters?

is Firefly somewhat comparable to SE? Since his filecards keep him very mysterious. Or any firefly question :P here's a question that popped up in a thread and kinda veered toward another, Vipers or troopers? who's higher. the filecard says e-4 for troopers and that vipers are the entry level for COBRA, which bothers me since Vipers are much better equipped.

Well I've heard some various discussion about who exactly joins Cobra. Just scum, or maybe people who feel cheated by their government too?

Loose, does the book go into detail about the specialtes of each member in a 6-man team? In other words, is it similar to Special Forces, where one man is the communications sgt, another is the medical sgt, etc? Also, what kind of gear/weapons are they packing? Is one guy carrying a SAW or M240? How many have M203s? What's the weapon of choice? M4s? M16A3s? MP5s? Do they have designated team positions?
This was Tora Bora so I imagine Weapons could change in different environments They can have what ever weapons they want, but in this battle they were carrying AKs for a bit until it was time to get into action. Then Each guy was carrying (2) M-4s one of which has a M203 combo. It seems like they have various team leaders to lead different missions and there may be two of each type. So first there is the Squadron Sgt Major. (He can pretty much go anywhere he wants but usually sticks with the commander so he doesn't mess anything up. He may be the second in command since I don't see anything about Jr officers. Then comes the Reconnaissance Troop Sgt. (Another Sgt Major) He would have three Team leaders under him, I think they are all Master Sgts. Then the Assault Troop Sgt. (another Sgt. Major) he would have three Team Leaders under him as well all Master Sgts. It gets confusing as to how big the teams are, or how big a Delta Squadron is. It seems they send out 6 man teams, one of those men is an Air Combat Controller worth his weight in gold. Plus then there are at least 6 snipers and they can be deployed solo, in teams of two, with a Combat Controller, or as a team of six. It doesn't say if the Snipers are part of which team but there are 6-8 of them. I only see one combat Medic mentioned, but they all take extensive training in medical treatments. In fact one team leader has his whole team trained in Close Air Support. So there is some structure there as far as how the teams are sectioned. Yet they get broken down into tams in so many different ways I can't tell who is in which team. The there is the Command element which includes the Medic and a communicator. There may be two of each of these guys. Its hard to tell who are the Delta Guys and the CIA guys at HQ. There were several communications interceptors, who speak multiple languages. They don't sound like Delta but more like Breaker. Also Invaluable. One of the most important guys is an Afghan American ex Marine working for the CIA, who brings the translation skills they need. I'm guessing this is an least 50 man squadron. So to answer another question these guys do't have much in the way of language skills and it hurts them. But then who learns Pashtun, in two weeks? Delta was there right after 9/11. I think a lot of these guys are Rangers more so than Green Berets. However the author mentions they occasionally give the out there individuals that are particularly bright a spot. |

This wasn't so clear during the early days of the comic, when Cobra was just another generic comic book terrorist group with a vague mandate to rule the world and a slight neo-fascist inspired look, but later in the series, when they became all about stirring conflict in developing nations to create markets for their Terror-Drome sales, I think it became clear that Cobra wasn't so much an "evil" organization bent on conquering the world as they were an amoral corporate entity all about profiteering from war and conflict and consequently, the suffering and pain of others. In my mind, this makes them more dangerous in certain respects than almost any ideological adversary: ideologies come and go and fade with the times (just look at how poorly traditional communism survived the transition into the 21st century), but inhuman greed (whether in the form of rogue individuals and organizations, unchecked corporations, or corrupt governments) constantly threatens to undermine civil society, regardless of political climate and trends. I'm still here... just a little busy lately. I'm open to suggestions about the next question, but issues of qualifications and rank don't seem to be the way to go.
