The thing about permanently organizing sub-units so specifically is that an organization can lose its versatility. A common sentiment in force organization is "overspecialization breeds obsolescence." In a typical Ranger company or SEAL troop, for example, mission or insertion-based special team groupings are almost always temporary (that way, they aren't bound by the TOE), based on contingency.
A scout swimmer team or a demolition team or a HALO team or whatever is almost always pulled from the same guys who comprise the rifle squads, temporarily grouped together to maximize their skill qualifications as a single unit. A better solution for a real-world GI Joe team, IMHO, is to stick with a rifle squad-based organization (if you're like me and imagine the Joe team as more akin to the Rangers or the SEALs) as the only permanent grouping, and then listing, per individual, what other contingency-based special team positions they are qualified to hold. So, as an example, a guy like Snake-Eyes would be assigned a permanent position in a rifle squad (as a rifleman, for instance). But he would also be qualified to hold positions in contingency-based special teams like the Combat Diver Team, Demolition Team, and Scout Swimmer Team. But the important thing to keep in mind is that these special teams aren't permanent and they don't exist "alongside" the squad organization. They are dictated purely by mission needs and are formed and dissolved from mission to mission. |

Ah, your ideas are much clearer now.
As for figuring out which Joes would be best suited for any special teams, I suggest you go by "feel": sometimes, certain characters don't officially have the appropriate background, but they look and "feel" like they're appropriate for a particular specialty. This is especially true with many of the post-1986 characters, who have less detailed information regarding their training and qualifications listed in their filecards. Speaking of qualifications and such, which Joes do you think would have been a better fit in another branch of service? Here are mine: - Muskrat: would have been a better fit as a Marine, I think. - Barbecue: would have been cooler, IMHO, as a Marine or a Navy man... both services have official "specialist" firefighter designations (mostly firefighters who specialize in aircraft rescue/HAZMAT incidents) that, at least on paper, appear more elite than Army firefighters (although they really go to many of the same training facilities) - Shockwave: would have been a better fit as a Marine or an Airman... these two services have prominent SWAT-style security and/or law enforcement organizations that some consider to be the closest thing to being special operations-capable without actually being SOC (the Marines have the FAST CQB teams, and the Air Force has the Phoenix Program) |

Yeah, Muskrat would have been better as a Marine. BBQ should have been Navy.
I use Ambush as recon. Even though he's not specifically called out as that, he just looks the part.

Right now I have the Joes in 3 large bases and 2 smaller bases.
The larger bases would have an infantry, artillery, armor and air elements. 2-3 tanks, 2-3 fighters, etc.. with the required support personal. The smaller bases I'm not quite sure how they'll be set up (a desert base and arctic base). I don't think I'm going to follow any currently organized set-up and kind of goes with what works best with the Joes. There are 6 Direct Action Units of 6 men. These are mulit-functional teams. They perform recon missions, recovery missions, typical Joe missions, go in ahead of the main assault, etc.. Each DAU has a sniper and some kind of observer (Forward Observer, Combat Controler, etc..). There are 2 amphibious DAU units (SEaLs and Marines). One of the 6 is also kind of an airborne insertered unit (Skydive, Barrell Roll, Skymate and some others). There's also a VBSS unit, a supply and logistics unit (for resupplying on the battlefield), a combat engineer unit, SWAT/CBQ. There's also a 12 man unit that I nicknamed the "fire and forget". These guys go in with no support and are on their own for the duration of the mission (it includes Wild Bill and Crankcase), headed up by Flint. Strictly black ops, off the book type operations. There's also the intelligence unit and a Special Forces unit that, like the "fire and forget" (i need a good name), operates on their own and behind enemy lines or deep in foreign territory. And can't forget the 4-man LRRP unit for deep and long recon missions. I'm debating what to call the DAUs. SHould they just be Team 1, Team 2, etc.. or give them squad nicknames. The bases are Alpha, Delta, etc.. Should they have nicknames or kind of go with the way military bases are named now? For example, the North American base could be called Fort Flagg. There's also an R&D unit. There are ALOT of holes to fill. Luckily there's alot of different versions of existing Joes that don't really look alike. Who is the LRRP team members? As far as the names go for your DA Squads, the book o Delta Force I'm reading has the teams broken down into about 4 six man squads. Each lead by a Sgt Major. Each team is given the Team Sgt Maj's nickname/codename. Like Team Mercer. They break the teams up further when they need to. The rolled into Tora Bora with 6-8 Snipers 3 or 4 Combat Controllers. These two specialties are hugely important to their missions. |

I think of Ambush as a sniper in training, but recon suits him as well. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 03-21-2009 at 10:32 PM.. |

Also, if the Team Leader is an E-9, what is typically the lowest ranking guy? An E-6? And are they bilingual?
