Yup. I remember reading GI Joe Special Missions #5 (the issue where Slip-stream has a showdown against the Strato-Viper) back in the day, and there were all these aircraft maintenance crew guys with codenames... I'm pretty sure the crew chief was code-named "Lowball" and one of the other guys was called "Peaches" (Hama used to use "Peaches" or "Peachy" -- in reference to Japanese folk hero Momotaro -- as pet names for certain characters).

The nicknames thing works as well. Actually, I think Hama pretty much mixed up code-name and nickname usage as he saw fit. "Alpine" sounds more like a nickname for one Albert Pine than an actual codename. Also, I think it was in GI Joe Special Missions #13 that a greenshirt type of guy had a code-name... I think he was called Mangler or something similar.

Mangler was a Joe-trainee. So was Lightfoot in that issue.

He showed up in one issue of Special Missions and gave his life so the team could escape.
Here's a picture: He was kind of cocky and not good Joe material, but in the end he proves his worth. He carries a wounded Lightfoot on foot for miles because Lightfoot is the purpose of the mission (to blow up a weapons cache).

In any event, the whole code-names thing doesn't really bother/interest me too much. The way I see it, they're just informal, individually designated call-signs like the ones that people occasionally use in most military organizations, and aren't a mark of authority or rank that are earned with experience with the unit. The key difference between regular and GI Joe team call-signs, of course, is that the Joes have persistent call-signs "attached" permanently to an individual (a big comms security risk if you ask me, but hey nobody asked, so... ). EDIT: neat scan. Now I remember that guy. He was a real d*ck in that issue, acting all insubordinate with Outback and pretty much threatening to kill Lightfoot after Lightfoot cracked under torture. Really? That would be cool. I wouldn't mind a Cool Breeze one as well.
