Hey guys,
WOW! Y'all have been busy! And there's a lot of new faces on the thread. That's awesome! Anyway, so I've been reading the book "The Mission, The Men, and Me." by Pete Blaber. Great book. Anyway, Blaber is a retired Delta Force commander, code name: Panther. Here's an example of how much Delta is like G.I. Joe. In 1998, Major Blaber was just starting his PT session... 6:30 AM: 10 Mile run. He was at Mile 2 (13 minutes into the run and exactly on pace), and his beeper went off. He turned around and ran back to Delta HQ in 11 minutes flat... for those of you who are counting, that's 4 miles in 24 minutes. I don't care who you are, that's fast. He was then told he would be on the next flight to Bosnia. He went home, grabbed his "Bosnia Bag" and was on the flight headed overseas 2 hours after his beeper went off. Once in Bosnia, he met up with 12 other Delta Operators in the Airport who had all arrived via different airlines and routes. They went to a safe house where where 20 other intel and Delta Operators were already in place. They planned and executed the capture of a Serbian War Criminal within about a week of their arrival. Their plan of capture involved using a newly invented "Spike Mat" to take out the target convoy's tires and a Gorilla Costume... I kid you not. He mention a bit about some of the other members on the team. One was a guy, code name: Predator. Blaber says that he once witness Predator scale a 9 story building in under a minute, using nothing but his hands and feet. Another member of the team was a world ranked pistol shooter. It's a LOT like G.I. Joe. Just thought y'all would enjoy that story. These operatives are physically unbelievable. Nearly superhuman. Blaber was a commander in Delta Force. He was an Officer, and rank matters. There's a lot more open communication and mutual accountability in planning and after action reports, but Officers are still in charge, Sergent Majors are still over E-8's and below. There's a lot of mutual respect and openness in planning, but in executing the missions, It's a firm chain of command.

Here are a couple of teaser pics of the reference bible that I wrote for the aborted licensing pitch I mentioned a few pages back. All the discussions here have convinced me to work on updating it (and include some of the images I've been displaying in my fan art thread) instead of posting the old one I wrote all those years ago.
Direct Action (DA) Element (click to see image) notes: The Direct Action Element is structurally patterned after a Ranger (Airborne) platoon, but reinforced with a mortar section and forward observer party. This is where you'll find the team's direct action assets (SEALs, Rangers, Force Recon) Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) Element (click to see image) notes: The ISR Element is loosely patterned after a combination of a Ranger Recon/Force Recon platoon and a Military Intelligence Interrogation & Surveillance platoon If you look closely, you'll see some "easter eggs." Anyway, I've still to update the text articles (not to mention that the pics above aren't final), the equipment information, and the training information and the pictures in the filecards, so I think it'll at least be a week (and that's optimistic) before I can put the PDF up for download. |

The hardest part for me is getting motivated to 'bash images for and write text pieces about the stuff that I don't really find all that interesting... for instance, the Headquarters Element would have all these service support assets (food service specialists, administrative clerks, etc.). |

Holy crap that is Awesome. I wish I could make out some of the faces better. I definitely see a Gung-Ho and an Outback and a Flint and a scarlett. Are they all based on Joes? Like who Are the element leaders for each of the HQ sections?
What other ones do you have in the works. I'll be stuck on these far a little while, but I'm curious to know what else your mind has cooking. |

Hey guys, check out this bit from this months Joecanuck newsletter:
"Customizing your universe. By Charles Cushman ([email protected]) What is the G.I. Joe universe to you? Is it the comic? The Cartoon? The Movie? Do your joes fly around in space or fight on the battlefield? Do they fight insurgents in Iraq or giant mutated plants? You don't need to create your own universe for Joe. They are toys, after all - they don't have to make sense. But as a grown up who still has a bit of his imagination left, it's an interesting intellectual exercise, and I enjoy making the Joe world make sense to me. I am a government employee. There - I admitted it. I spend a lot of time thinking about how government works and how groups within it work. I decided that I would do some research, and make my G.I. Joe team work like it would have to work in the real world. Using books like "Shadow Warriors" by Tom Clancy and some Wikipedia research, I was able to piece together the following description of my Joe team. General Integration Joint Operations Exercise. The purpose of my JOE team is the proving of integration and combined arms and joint force doctrine for the purposes of enhancing force integration. At least that's what the operational statement says. They actually use the funding from the JFK special training budgetary allocation to conduct domestic and foreign covert military anti-terror operations, which is usually a legislative no no. They have no house oversight, and have never been considered to be part of SOC/JSOC/USSOCOM. They are not an operational team and do not have a stand up state of readiness. They operate under the special training provisions in the Goldwater-Nichols Act and the Nunn-Cohen Act, and a special presidential order that goes back to the Kennedy Administration. In the Hierarchy of command, they operate out of the JFK special warfare center, which is the only place on the military hierarchy that they could operate and still "answer to the president" without being part of the typical chain of command. They get their equipment from private contractors as "evaluation material" or through reciprocal agreements with USSOCOM so they don't manage a Table of Equipment. They are paid through the JFK special training budgetary allocation, and each member of the team is considered a military instructor on special assignment. The Greenshirts and Steel Brigade are members of the normal military rank and file who, for the purposes of their Career Sheets are participating in "training exercises". Rank structure is completely different because of the nature of the "operational exercise" designation. Each member of the team is a training instructor on special assignment they all hold a similar rank of instructor or specialist (similar to professors at a university) for the purposes of chain of command (though they aren't paid the same). Duke might report to Dusty on an operation because the nature of the "training operation" design discards rank. Anyone of any rank can be put at the head of an operational training group, based on specific knowledge of the subject matter. Intel comes from the maintenance of reciperical agreements with NSA, NRO and Homeland Security. They have a contract with each agency to transfer the data between agencies, and skim all the best intel off the top. The team was created as an Army based 13 man Special Detachment A, with a special exemption for Scarlett, as women were not able to participate on Special Ops teams by legislative restriction. Once the operational plan was approved, they brought in a Marine, Air Force Captain, Navy Seal, and a few other specializations in order for the official purposes of "developing joint force doctrine". They kept on adding area specialists from different branches. Note that the team was RIF'd in '94 because it's secret nature made it a dumping ground for every black budget legislatively questionable pork barrel project in the Pentagon. They ended up having to take on the maintenance of an inefficiently designed mini aircraft carrier, a mobile Nuclear Weapons truck, a weaponized space shuttle, and bunch of other stuff too controversial for the regular military. The cost for maintaining the equipment eventually became too large to hide in the black budget. They were shut down as part of the Clinton era Reductions in Force, as an "egregious waste of the taxpayers funding and a ridiculous waste of training dollars". They were reinstated post 911, as a coordinating body, and are officially GIJOE II. Now that is frankly a little obsessive compulsive - but it suits my personality and tastes just fine. If you're looking to define your own universe, here are a few questions to get you started. 1. Military or Sci Fi? Is your Joe team a military team, or a super future adventure force? Do they carry lasers or guns? Can anyone pick up a jetpack and fly? 2. Humans or Humans + ? Do aliens and snake creatures from the ancient past exist in your world? Do clones, venomized troops and mega monsters come out of your Cobra labs? 3. Serious or Comedic? Is cobra commander a bumbler who is constantly foiled by the joe team, or a ruthless mastermind in control of a deadly terrorist organization? 4. Do people die? Does your universe support the death of certain characters, or do they bounce back from a "mere flesh wound". Start there, and run with it. Creating your own universe helps you think about the toys in a new context. You might end up liking or taking an interest in parts of the line that you never cared about, or being able to close the book on parts that don't fit in your universe. Either way, you’ll have fun doing it." Sounds like a guy right up our alley. Anyone know if he's a tanker? Might drop him a line and have him come visit the thread. Another "voice" to hear from.

I think this makes a perfectly feasible explaination for a lot of things. We all may pay closer attention to rank as the Joe team is large enough. and no matter what Duke is higher ranked than any other enlisted man. No matter what Dusty knows, Duke knows better, and is a leader.
Now if Dusty and Salvo are on a mission together then maybe Dusty has a better ability to lead in that situation, but a E-7 most likely has a good 5-10 years life experience on an E-5. Still this guy has added what I would call the best explanation of how the Joes could function. Especially on how they could get their intel. I like the part about the wasteful mini-carrier. |

Oh, and I'll be including full-size images to go with the filecards, so don't ruin your eyesight trying to make out the details in the teaser pic. Quote:
But yeah, aside from the two operational elements above, there's also a command & control element, a headquarters element, a special operations aviation element and the accompanying articles that explain the functions of each element. Besides that, I've got a somewhat detailed armory and equipment inventory section, and filecards/dossiers of some 30+ select personnel. |
