I figure Tunnel Rat is a Ranger who's been crosstrained as an EOD. So when they're out and come across an IED or need a bomb rigged or something, Tunnel Rat is the guy they call.
Tripwire and Lightfoot are more Combat Engineers. I still don't have a good place for the Flamethrowers. What were they used for in the military? Still don't have 'em nowadays? I know it was never a primary "speciality" or anything like that, but there were guys with flamethrowers in 'Nam and WW2. I've always thought of my B.A.T.S. as fairly smart. You can't trick them. They aren't incredibly tough, they can be stopped, but it takes alot. They're expensive so there aren't hundreds of them. Even Cobra has a budget. But yeah, they'd be perfect for cleaning out a building. As far as I can remember from what I've seen WW2 and 'Nam flamethrowers were used to clear out tunnels and closed spaces. Like the tunnels on the Japanese islands, or bunkers in europe Hence why I would use a flamethrowing BAT to clear buildings Glad someone else likes their BATs intelligent.

I don't think the Joes can be accurately placed into today's military structure without substantial changes. Remember, these were based on the military back in the early 80s and when the 90s came around Hasbro didn't care about actual structure at all (as shown by Barrel Roll).
But it sure is fun trying.

ninja6fett pretty much nailed it. Even though no "official" Geneva Convention ban ever came down on flamethrowers, almost all modern armies have stopped using flamethrowers because of their cruel and inhumane nature as weapons. I think the last two countries to "officially" use flamethrowers against people were the US (in Vietnam) and the USSR (in Afghanistan). I do remember some US servicemen using some vintage M2 flamethrowers in the Philippines in the mid-1980s (so it was apparent that some units still had leftover flamethrowers in their armories at least up 'til then), but only as a way to clear thick jungle brush. Right, so finding a good use for the Joe Flamethrowers is hard.
Barbecue was easy to "reassign". I still kept him primarily a firefighter but moved him onto the Joes' VBSS team. I figured if they were boarding a ship and a fire started, they'd want someone there to handle it.

Yeah. I guess a guy like Blowtorch can be re-imagined as an army welder, but that's hardly something that looks like it might fit in with the Joes.
The only tactical duty I can think of that involve using an open flame is door and obstacle breaching. I know the Marine FAST CQB units occasionally use what's called a tactical breaching torch, a lightweight man-portable torch for cutting through barricaded steel doors and such, so maybe Blowtorch will better fit a "modern" GI Joe team better as an MP tactical breacher type. Heck, even the name fits. As for Charbroil... a cook, maybe? :P Last edited by zuludelta; 03-18-2009 at 09:01 PM.. |

There's Blowtorch, Blast-Off, Charbroil and Ice Cream Soldier (ugh ugh ugh, what "genius" at Hasbro thought that one up).
Hasbro certainly likes making Joe Flamethrowers. I can see a Tactical Breacher using a set-up like the Dreadnok, Torch, uses. Could even see that being used in the Joes' SWAT/CBQ team. But a Flamethrower has shown by the toys? Makes a cool looking figure (not looking at you Ice Cream Soldier) but as a real military figure? Not so much... I still keep coming to the Security Team. They can use the Flamethrowers to repel attackers or clear away trees and bushes in the way of constructing the base. But that could also be a Greenshirt job. /sigh

Blowtorch could always burn BATs. Could be the Joe team was reissued those sorts of weapons in order to try and fight a robotic threat. Just throwin' it out there.
It would also be a place to put BBQ. BATs carry flamethrowers too, after all. A BAT hunter/killer/response team might not be a bad idea, even if it ain't exactly strict contemporary military organization. Be a good place for Blowtorch and BBQ both. Not sure who else. Flash? Mainframe?

Laser Troopers wouldn't be good for a B.A.T. response team. A member would have to be able to react quickly, and lasers take too long to sight in.
Flamethrowers would be okay, but I see guys like Fast Draw, Heavy Duty, Salvo, etc.. being part of a B.A.T. Response Team. Rockets and other exploding devices would be better used against the B.A.T.S. Takes 'em out quicker. Would be a good way to introduce Big Lob into the Joeverse, since he's basically supposed to be a grenadier. He'd be perfect for a B.A.T. Response Team. Fast and accurate with his grenades.
