We could ask Larry if he ever created characters that he later found very little use for or even if he likedthem he just couldn't fit them in. For example the Tank and Artillery guys.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed by Hama's response but not surprised. But hey, if this is how he felt about the military details, then at least he's being candid. I think the way to move forward now is to focus on what he is interested in: Character motivations and thought processes.

I would love to see that. That would be a really interesting read.

EDIT: Well, I found the document... I think I'll be updating some of the images with the stuff I've already posted in my art thread (and add a CYA disclaimer or two), after which I'll throw it up on sendspace in a day or three. Last edited by zuludelta; 03-15-2009 at 01:02 PM.. |

That's kind of what I was expecting from Hama. Like he said, he was kind of making things up as he went and wasn't able to look ahead to see what was down the pipe in order to fit it all together, like any fiction writer dealing in what will become a long and complicated universe. But I agree with zuludelta that it's actually a bit of good news as it allows each of us to come up with our own structures.
I still think we can get some answers about the general command and rank structures out of Mr. Hama if we word the questions in such a way that it focuses on the conception and construction of the filecards themselves or ask about specific story arcs from the comics. For example, we know Hama always felt like he was saddled with Duke but preferred Stalker as the top sergeant. Maybe if we ask him to elaborate on that a little bit, we can get him to explain what he thought those two guys jobs on the team should be. Tying it in to the filecards, we could ask why, if he did see Stalker as the first shirt, was he only an E-5 and no mention is made of him being Hawk's number one guy in his original card. |

One question I'd like to ask Larry Hama would be if he ever found some of the token characters that came with Hasbro's earlier toy designs a bit too over the top and difficult to justify within the context of the GI Joe organization. I mean, sure, it was the 1980s and all, but some of the designs were just some pretty unintentionally funny (or offensive, depending on one's capacity for humour, I suppose) cultural caricatures.
Take Quick-Kick, for example. Reading his filecard, it seems that there was a disconnect between the toy design (a half naked, barefoot man armed with melee weapons) and Hama's ideas for the character (an infantryman with a secondary specialty in intelligence). |

One thing we could ask him is how is he doing the new IDW Joe differently from the old Marvel Joe, since there's no toyline to support and he has access to all the characters. Is he organizing it differently, following the same rules, or what is he doing differently this time around.

So the older filecards are great, they list what military schools the various Joes went to. Later filecards, not so much. But some interesting/fun information can still be learned from reading them.
What fun/interesting/strange things have you learned from reading the filecards? 1 - Scarlett is a sniper. She attended and graduated the Marine Sniper School. That's pretty cool. Makes her even more of a bad-ass. I've ordered up a sniper rifle from marauders for her. Until, and maybe even after, we get a Low-Light or Cross Hair, Scarlett is my sniper. 2 - Mutt is a jungle trooper. He attended and graduated Jungle Warfare Training (was even a teacher there). To get to Jungle Warfare Training you have to be a Ranger. So Mutt is a Ranger and as the same qualifications as Recondo. That just begs for a Tiger Force Mutt. So Mutt is much more then a Dog Handler. hi sorry im new on the site i wanna kniw something about the COBRA Para-Viper he exist on the comics or not ??? he is a new character because i dont know anything about him |
