Troy, maybe you should consider making BR into a Marine FAC which has more of the elements that you want in a character.
The USMC requires that: FACs must be a winged Naval Aviator or Naval Flight Officer with at least 2 years operational flying experience. FACs must have attended and graduated from the Expeditionary Warfare Training Group (EWTG) Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) course. At the completion of the TACP course Aviators are granted the 7502 FAC Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) and are considered certified and qualified JTACs. |

Marine FAC would work.
Barrell Roll's cards have him as a High Altitude Marksman, no reference to branch or training. Primary is Markmanship Instructor, Secondary is Fixed Wing Pilot. His DTC figure is just Marksman and is Markmanship INstructor and Pilot. Bombstrike's card has her as a Forward Air Controller. Primary is Forward Air Controller and Secondary is Intelligence. No mention of branch or qualifications. Black-Out's card just says he's a sniper. No mention of branch or qualifications. I think the DDP Databooks, or whatever they were called, had more information. But somewhere it mentions the Stalls being a military family with a long tradition of it. We've always tried to place them in the Army or Air Force. But what about the Marines? The Marines could work, but how would Bombstrike fit into that? Barrell Roll could be a Marine FAC (that would explain how he's a fighter pilot, former Naval aviator). Black-Out is a former Marine sniper. But Bombstrike...

However, I'm not sure how realistic it would be to have a Marine FAC / Sniper. He certainly would be one badazz if he was deployed in this manner. He could spend his time scouting deep in enemy territory as a living, lethal, anti-personnel weapon, taking out high-ranking enemy officers, while simultaneously being able to call down some heavy ordnance on tanks, bases and other large targets.

Bombstrike would be a FAC. But that seems to be the only thing that would integrate BR's ground abilities and fighter pilot.
Ugh.. I don't know why I like BR so much. Didn't have a huge length of time in DDP's books, but he's one of my favorites.

Loose Cannon's right. We haven't spent much time discussing the Heavy Equipment Operators of the Joe team. We've mainly focused on the covert/sneak/special ops guys.

The United States Marine Corps is the only United States service to refer to its JTACs as FACs. The USMC requires that:
FACs must be a winged Naval Aviator or Naval Flight Officer with at least 2 years operational flying experience. Non-aviator JTACs in the United States Marine Corps must meet the following requirements: They must be a Staff Noncommissioned Officer or above, and must have a combat arms MOS. To be eligible for JTAC training the individual must be in or slated to serve in a JTAC billet per unit T/O's. Must complete JTAC primer course at EWTG (Now a distance learning program). Must attend and graduate from EWTG TACP (Certified but not qualified) at this point the Marine is authorized the 8002 (formerly 9986) Skill designator. Must complete the 300 level training syllabus after TACP school per the USMC TACP T&R (Qualified JTAC) After completion of one the DoDs JTAC courses non-aviator Marines are given the secondary MOS of 8002 (formerly MOS 9986), that of a qualified JTAC/FAC. |
