That's really interesting, especially considering Lady Jaye's connection to Ireland. I suppose those guys work with the S.A.S. or the Parachute Regiment.

It's possible that some of Breaker's language training was acquired outside the military. Maybe he's a first-generation American and his parents spoke a language other than English at home so he picked that up. Most people study at least one language in high school. Maybe learned one or two more on his own and his proficiency for languages is what landed him in communications when he joined the Army.
I like that some of the Joes picked up training outside the military. Steeler was a heavy equipment operator so becoming a tank commander seems like a natural progression. I like that Idea. maybe Kibby is a Americanized version of Khatabi (Morrocan) I always like that some Joes got experience outside of the military. All the Heavy Equipment Operators seem that way. That's a list of names and qualifications we haven't touched. |

I understand the point you're making about Recondo, but I think we have to take the historical circumstances of the 80's into consideration. The Army's old Jungle Warfare Training Center was in Panama up until the U.S.'s lease down there ran out - Thank you, President Carter - and we had to close that installation. That place was run/taught by a lot of guys from 7th Special Forces Group. I would maintain that he's Army, not Marine Corps.
The LRRP's in 'Nam weren't "Junior Rangers" They were more like Advanced Rangers... Ranger school was a prerequisite. Recondo school in country - at Nha Trang - was insane. To graduate, you had to go on a live fire Patrol against the NVA and live to tell about it. How's that for a Senior class field trip? The LRRP were the best of the guys who were Infantry and Ranger qualified. Given that Recondo worked as an instructor, and given his name basically means "Advanced Ranger", and considering the work he does with the natives in Sierra Gordo... that's all "Hearts & Minds" kind of stuff with an indigenous population that he mobilizes as a very efficient fighting force. He seems like a "Green Beret" to me. He's obviously a fierce combatant, but he's smart - University of Wisconsin, Madison - he's good with languages, and he's an excellent teacher: Jungle Warfare Center and with the Sierra Gordo natives. That says Special Forces to me. |

I know it was mentioned on here awhile back, I can't remember by who, but someone said that Stalker's time as a gang leader would make him a natural for urban warfare training. I like that idea. I'm surprised we never got an urban camo figure of him. I'm not sure to what extent it was addressed in the comics, but I like the idea of Stalker taking what he learned as a gang warlord and applying it to being a soldier. It's partially what makes him one of the most well-rounded members of the team.

So a revised Barrell Roll filecard redone to help clarify his branch and role.
"Barrell Roll comes from an army family. The Stalls have always had a member in the army for as long as they can remember. His older brother joined and when it came his turn, Barrell Roll followed his love for the sky and joined the Air Force to become a fighter pilot. He had received his pilot's liscense even before getting his driver's liscense. Became one of the youngest fighter pilots ever. Well on a top secret mission he was shot down behind enemy lines. He barely made it back to safety. Realizing that he wasn't prepared for it to ever happen again, he transfered to the Army and joined the Rangers, so he'd be prepared for combat on the ground. Like everything he does, he excelled and quickly became an Airborne Ranger. He takes special pride in being able to fight at an elite level in the air and on the ground. Has been thinking of taking SEaL training in his spare time." "Barrell Roll is a perfectionist and overachiever. If he does something, he'll be one of the best at it. This would annoy his teammates if he had anything resembling an inflated ego. He knows he's good, but he also knows he's not the best. His biggest flaw is that he will go out of his way to repair the Stall family name that he feels his older brother tarnished with his defection to Cobra." Need some help fleshing it out and making it read better.

Yeah, I agree. I think Outback and Recondo are Special Forces. I think that's safe to say. There may not be conclusive evidence in the case of Outback, but it makes sense. I would submit, that if there is any other candidate that should also be considered SF, it would be Stalker.
About the Ranger qualification... "Qualified" means they graduated from Ranger School and have their black and gold Ranger Tab. That's what Ranger Qualified means. They may not be a part of the Ranger Regiment, those guys wear what is known as "The Ranger Scroll" for their unit patch. That scroll means they serve/served with the 75th Ranger Regiment. The Tab means they went to Ranger School and graduated and are authorized/QUALIFIED to wear the Ranger Tab. I would also add Spirit to that list of Ranger qualified Joes... Low-Light most certainly has a Ranger tab, and a Special Forces Tab, and is either Delta or CIA SAD. He's the REAL deal. |

Oliver, are you sure being a Ranger was a prerequiste? I thought they developed Recondo School to train non rangers in an intense 3-week Ranger Course. In other words, these guys never went to Ranger School before and were considered Ranger qualified or junior Rangers. At least according to Wiki, but info is limited.
My dad was at Ft. Campbell during the last days of the Recondo School... they had moved it back to Ft. Campbell after Vietnam. When it moved stateside, it was like "Junior Ranger School". They gave out "Recondo" tabs instead of the coveted Arrowhead "Recondo" patch they had in Vietnam. The eventually ended the Recondo school because it was expensive to maintain, and it just duplicated a lot of stuff that was going on at Ranger School. But at Nha Trang - That was a different story. I've read several first hand accounts and I've seen a documentary on it. When they transferred all the LRRPs to the 75th Ranger Regiment, that changed a lot. LRRPs were the Ranger elite. Nha Trang was pretty much run by Special Forces. It was like Ranger finishing school, and not every Ranger got to go... prior to the establishment of the 75th Ranger Regiment, it is certainly possible that some soldiers who were not yet Ranger qualified got to go to Recondo School. Say for example, the 25th needed some guys to be Recondo Trained so the 25th could put together it's own LRRP unit like every other Combat division had. They might just send the best guys they had and get them trained up really quick. That didn't work out very well... a lot of guys died. So the Army formed the 75th Ranger Regiment. Rangers had not served as "Ranger Units" since Korea. Once the 75th took over the LRRPs, training got a lot more standardized and much less haphazard. Recondo School became a finishing school for the Ranger elite. So what I said earlier, really refers to the Post 75th Regiment Army. At least, that is my understanding.

I also think, that when we add this credential/expertise to Stalker's other list of training and expertise, not to mention experience, it's just that much more of a reason why the man would be selected for Special Forces Training. He's just as well rounded as anyone else on the Joe team... as much as Flint, Claymore... anybody.
