I hear what you're saying about Chuckles... fair point.
I don't know if Mercer is really skilled enough. I understand his background as a former Cobra... but he was just a Viper. If you want Snake-Eyes, fair enough, but why Snake-Eyes and Kamakura? Do you really need two Ninjas? |

My "starting" 12:
Falcon Flint Roadblock Snake-Eyes Beachhead Breaker Doc Salvo Torpedo Shockwave Tunnel Rat Scarlett Here's why: Roadblock and Salvo are heavy weapons. I didn't think any of the other anti-armor guys are better qualified then Salvo, may be wrong. Doc, need the medic. Breaker is communications. Flint makes having Duke kind of redundant. Beachhead and Torpedo are the best of the Rangers/SEaLs Snake-Eyes is the Ranger/Ninja Scarlett is the intelligence operative. Shockwave and Tunnel Rat for their skillsets. Falcon could easily be replaced by Claymore, but I've always liked Falcon.

Mercer V2 is one of my favorites, but his Demolitions skill would help. The fact that he's a Sgt Maj, make me think there is more to him than being just a viper. Not unlike Chuckles I imagine he was undercover for a long long time. Plus he's a Mecenary so everything he does is off the books and totally deniable.
But I think it did give him an appreciation for the good guys. He knows what Cobra is like on the inside. He knows just how evil they really are. He knows it's not what he wants. He's willing to do anything (and I mean anything) to stop them.

Here's my ideal 12 below. I arranged them into a Special Forces unit. I've included Recoil because his RTO and LRRP skills make him a prime candidate to fufill the role of an FO if needed.
Detachment Commander - Falcon or Claymore Ast Detachment Commander - Flint Operations Sgt - Big Brawler Ast Operations Sgt - Leatherneck Weapons Sgt - Repeater (heavy weapons) Weapons Sgt - Big Ben (heavy weapons) Engineer Sgt - Tunnel Rat (EOD training) Engineer Sgt - Beach Head (no demo training but could learn) Medical Sgt - Lifeline Medical Sgt - Stalker (has medic training) Comm Sgt - Recoil (RTO/LRRP training) Comm Sgt - Sneak Peek (RTO training) If only I had room for Low-light and Hit N Run... |

The 12... why does it feel like I'm rewriting America's Elite?
CO: Claymore - - XO: Falcon Warrant: Flint - - 1SG: Duke Ranger: Stalker - - Ranger: Beach-Head SEAL: Torpedo - - Sniper: Low-Light Comm: Mainframe - - Medic: Airborne (SkyPatrol) Mach Gun: Roadblock - - Demo: Tunnel Rat This team is designed to be able to split into two teams. Using secondary qualifications, most of the specialties/positions are duplicated in both columns. Snake-Eyes would not have a place on the team if it were just 12 soldiers, and it were up to me.

I just think it goes to show that a 12 slot roster is unrealistic for the Joe Team given the size of the threat posed by Cobra. Delta Force is estimated to have between 600 - 1000 operatives. That's WAY bigger than the Joe team, and Delta Force doesn't even have to deal with Cobra.

I figured 12 since that has sort of been the standard, you know Dirty Dozen. But we all have our favorites.
Stalker and Falcon have always been my medics. And I figure everyone knows how to operate a radio, so I figure those spots are like how Sparks was portrayed in the cartoons. Second level HQ characters. I always wished Dial-Tone or Recoil we confirmed Special Ops guys. But if the joes are only 12 they would need only covert ops undercover, spy types. Otherwise the government would use the SEALs or Delta Force or Force Recon |

Oh, I agree, oliver. I think of the Joe Team as a Company-sized unit with various elements. They have a small armor and artillery section for support, as well as aircraft and watercraft for transportation, assault, recon, and anti-armor. I'm still rearranging my roster to include a small company HQ, rifle platoon with mortar and anti-armor sections, Fire Support, Special Forces unit like the one above, aircrew, tank crew, sniper team, CBRN team, SEAL unit and other recon units (airborne, air assault or amphibious). The Joes need to have a little bit of everything to be as well-rounded as possible.

I wish I knew more about how the SEALs structure their platoons. I know that a typical SEAL platoon has 16 men (or 18 if it has two EODs) and can be divided into two squads or four teams. Every man has a dive partner. The platoon is led by an OIC (O3) and AOIC (O2) with a Platoon Chief (E7) and Leading Petty Officer (E6). The other members range from E4-E6, but mostly E5s. The platoon employs a wide range of skills--sniper, corpsman, close air support, communicator, navigator, maritime/engineering, interrogator--but I don't know if each member has a specific designation. I'm sure they do. And of course they're all trained in HALO, scuba and demolitions.
