I thought of the Hammer after I shut down last night. The Hammer would be a vehicle that would be in all the teams, it's a pretty utility vehicle, carries alot, has extra gunners, etc..
The Support Team would probably have 2 Hammers. There would be a Hostile Environment/Chemical/Biological Team. Stationed on the Flagg for deployment as needed. Airtight Clean Sweep Ozone There'd be an Urban Assault/Hostage Rescue team on the Flagg as well. Shockblast Longarm Bullhorn Surefire Wide Scope

By the Joe's nature, size of the unit and all that, they'd have to work in pretty small teams and without the usual support structure.
Completely independant and self-supporting. So normal unit numbers (tank division) wouldn't work for them. The original 13 is a good set-up for the basic assault team, most of the pieces are there: Fast attack vehicle: VAMP and Clutch Armor: Steeler and Mobat Artillary: MMS and Hawk and the HAL and Grand Slam Infantry: Grunt Anti-Armor: Zap Heavy Weapons: Short-Fuze and Rock 'n Roll Covert Ops/Sneaky Guys: Snake Eyes, Stalker, Scarlett Communications: Breaker Tech/Chemical: Flash Only thing missing is a medic. Would need more then just Grunt for foot soldier. But the basic set-up is there.

I think we're hitting on the biggest problem with Joe in a "real" sense. There's a lack of numbers and support.
The Mauler would need at least a 3 man crew. Heavy Metal could double as driver/commander. But would still need a gunner and loader. So are those greenshirt positions? Considering there was never a greenshirt element in the comics, just the cartoon, how to get around that problem? I think Joe would have worked best without the armor elements. They work best when they're a Delta Force type of unit. No armor, fast and sneaky guys. Pure covert ops. But we're stuck with the armor, lol, and it's pretty cool. So how do we deal with 'em? Greenshirts or Joes?

Honestly we haven't tackled the Artillery. I feel like that will require a little more thought.
Nor have we discussed some of the special Weapons or Biological guys. I prefer Long-Arm as that EOD guy instead of what ever they started him out as. As a kid all those guys in Yellow and Orange sort got stuck together as part of a team of that wasn't so much of a combat team, but more of a clean Up crew. I hated trying to think about what to do with them after I had better joes. Some of them I think should really be Combat Engineers which would serve the team better. So What do we do with these guys: Flash Tripwire Blowtorch Barbecue Airtight Sci-Fi Light-Foot Charbroil DeeJay Scoop Clean Sweep Ozone Ice Cream Soldier Blast-off There are others. Some of them are actually Infantry, but when would they be deployed in those outfits? Although I could see the use of a HAZMAT team with all these guys. Maybe even 2 teams. They would mostly be HQ based or rear echelon troops. Their duties would be more of their secondary MOS like Ordnance, Vehicle maintenance or Small Arms Repair. or even Barbecue Chef. They should all be EOD trained and Combat engineers. And I guess the Laser troopers would be their Infantry. |

Tripwire and Lightfoot are Assault Team EOD. They also lay mines/bombs, act as combat engineers/sappers, and do the mine detecting bit.
Long Arm would do that role for the SWAT/Urban team. Airtight, Ozone, Clean Sweep would be the hazmat/biological/chemical team. The rest.. yeah... Not much use for Flamethrowers and Laser Soldiers. There's enough Flamethrowers that could throw 'em on the Assault Teams just for the hell of it.

Yeah. Grand Slam is artillery. Who's the loader? Who does the sighting? etc.. etc.. So is Grand Slam better served as the unit commander, and the different positions are taken up by Greenshirts? I'd hate to be a Joe greenshirt. You do all the work and the guys with codenames get all the glory. LOL

Greenshirts or Joes? Artillery would pose as more of a problem. Artillery doesn't travel well without a lot of support, from troops and engineers anti-aircraft support of some kind. If you set up a couple of mortars that works. But artillery will always have to be dragged around and then set up. The way I tend to envision it would be as part of the HQ element. Either traveling with a mobile HQ or dropped off on a hill top with a contingent of troops to dig in and set up perimeters, Fox-holes and a base of operations. For instance the Mountain Howitzer was always one of my favorite toys. I have 4. Plop those puppies done on a hilltop with a couple of Whirlwinds and maybe a FLAK. Put up a few of the watch towers, now you have a Forward base of operations. If you were planning on staying a while you may add a few LAW as well and definitely need the Outpost defender.(Which I never owned) Now that we've sort of migrated to vehicles I wonder what secrets we can unlock there? Like is the FLAK both an Artillery piece and a Anti-Aircraft weapon? |

So I'm thinking we break the artillery down into 2 groups: mobile and fixed.
Fixed are set up at the various bases, and brought into the field only when setting up a Forward Base. The mobile artillery (SLAM, HAL, MMS) would be fitted to make them usable by a smaller crew (same as the tanks). So they can be brought in and moved pretty quickly as needed. The FLAK I always saw as anti-aircraft, along with the whirlwind, SLAM and HAL. The Mountain Howitzer was artillery. What else was there?

Everything is somewhat mobile except the FLAK which is capable of firing all sorts of projectiles, the Air Defense, the LAW, and the Spytroops gun Station
Mobile: Slugger General Night Blaster( I never owned) THUNDERCLAP Lynx (Not sure if its an Artillery piece or anti-Tank) Mobile Battle Bunker(Those are Mortars on the side) Quickstrike Road Rebel? Sky Sweeper (if we include Air Defense) Wolverine( if it is used as Anti-Air but it's an Anti-tank weapon) Equalizer Slaughter's Armadillo Attack Cruiser Neutralizer |
