How realistic is it that Ace is a full-time USAF G.I. JOE fighter pilot and a "counter intelligence" agent. The only way I see this being possible is if he's assigned to the USS Flagg and works with Keel-Haul and the Intelligence specialists there in an advisory capacity.

There are some G.I. Joe team members who are, but Ace is not one of them. Counter intelligence is information gathered and activities conducted to protect against espionage, other intelligence activities, sabotage, or assassinations conducted by or on behalf of foreign governments or elements of foreign organizations, persons, or international terrorist activities. Ace has “intelligence operations” listed as his secondary specialty on his file card. That is a different animal than counter intelligence. Let me explain, using simple cut and paste sentences from the Air Force careers website: USAF Operations Intelligence is primarily enlisted Airmen analyzing raw data, looking for usable intelligence. Fulfilling a critical role, these specialists receive, analyze, report and disseminate information for key elements to help ensure our forces have the intelligence they need to remain safe and successfully complete their missions. Ace is, among other things, a USAF Intelligence Officer. Responsible for both protecting our information as well as collecting data from external threats, Ace is essential to operational planning and ultimate success. From analyzing data to coordinating with other services or determining the capabilities and vulnerabilities of an adversary, Ace provides indispensable knowledge pivotal to the team for successfully completing their missions. Ace not only goes on combat missions, but also flies reconnaissance operations for the G.I. Joe team. His “intelligence operations” skill tells us that he is a USAF Intelligence Officer, but not a “counter intelligence” agent. He’ll leave the cloak-and-dagger operations to someone else.

I just looked over all the “Ace” and “Captain Ace” filecards I could find on yojoe, and if there is any mention of counterintelligence, I missed it.
I don’t know that much about the Air Force, but I’ve been reading some Navy fighter pilot (and backseater) books lately, mostly Phantom and Tomcat era, and the impression I got is that a navy squadron’s intelligence officer was the go-to guy for info about, say, the SAM or AAA threat at a particular target, or any recent news about changes in enemy tactics, as well as a point of contact for outside organizations —like, say, the outreach guy from the technical intelligence division that collects, organizes, and disseminates this info service-wide— to call up/fax with any updates or requests. Kinda the guy whose job it is to stay up-to-date and to update others within the squadron. I’m guessing that’s what the filecard meant, though it’s possible the reference was supposed to be to the TARPS photo recon pod the Skystriker and some Tomcats carried. |

Even strictly considering this mold only, 3 filecards describe him correctly, while just the one has the mistake you’ve pointed out. And the one that has the mistake also suggests that he isn’t mainly a pilot despite BOTH all the rest of the character’s history AND his own listed MOS printed on that very file card, not to mention the very clear considerations Playful outlined above, and what sounded like your doubts in the original question. Seems like an open and shut case that they just goofed, IMO. It’s a great catch on your part that the three filecards from that year don’t all match! I admit I only checked one v6 originally, or in fact didn’t notice there was more than one...I just read the text on the site rather than trying to view the cards... Dang. I thought for sure that Bullhorn was a Marine, but his v.2 file card has his Secondary MOS as an 88M (Motor Transport Operator), which is an Army code.
