Here's a question: Which branch of service is Gears in? He was a member of Star Brigade, so I'm inclined to think Air Force. If that's true, then he's the only non Pilot Air Force Officer in G.I. Joe - and arguably the only non pilot Air Force member of G.I. Joe... 'cause I still don't entirely buy into the DDP version of Bomb strike and Barrel Roll.
If Gears is an Air Force Officer, he may be the best man for running the Maintenance unit at the Joe Air field. Gotta Keep the planes flying. The Joe team needs an S-4. There has to be someone to oversee the turning of wrenches.

In the flashback in The Origin of Snake Eyes issue, I'm pretty sure someone is shown drinking, in a moving car no less, just before the accident that caused the death of Snake Eyes' family. I think there's a reference to coffee being laced with brandy.

My thought is that Bombstrike sort of fills this role, but it is in no way a realistic portrayal of what a combat controller is or should be. Definitely on the list of the top ten specialties missing in the Joe organization. |

(Better make it a good one) Gears has to be Air Force but I don't know enough about how R&D works in the military. Don't Defense Contractors handle most of that? |

Man I had a nice long email on this last night and I somehow got booted off. Anyway, I don't know enough about staff level positions in a Battalion/Brigade sized unit. But does a Battalion have S-1 through S-9 as part of the command structure? I figure the Joes are roughly about a 2000 man operation with the Green Shirts. Probably organized like a Marine MEU since that has a similar capability of Air/Artillery/Helicopter and Naval ships, which is about that many men not including the crew for the Flotilla they ride with.

Part of the Snake Eyes origin story (issue #26) also talks about Snake Eyes's family getting wiped out by a drunk driver, but it's a separate instance.

The coffee laced with brandy bit was from the driver (Chuck) who picked up Soft Master and dropped him off in Springfield, and then later picked up Candy and Billy and crashed with them - all from issue 43 (although the guy's first appearance was in #42).
