So reading over some info on the link that Tyroc provided. Special Forces Sniper School is open to Special Forces soldiers and also SOF soldiers. On the flip side U.S. Army Sniper School is open to 18 series and 11 series. So why would a SF or a 75th soldier choose one school over another? Would not both schools cover the same type of training (fieldcraft, sniping, etc)?

Edit - It might have been the book by Nicholas Irving; The Reaper, he was a Ranger sniper. Apart from that, there can be a variety of reasons why one might try to go to one school vs another. The common one being class size. Just because one might be SF, the operator is still competing with other SF etc for any open slots. Especially if that person is working around a strict schedule. Most of these guys don't want to be separated from their team for too long, even if it is something cool like sniper school. Last edited by Tyroc; 11-18-2019 at 09:46 AM.. |

In regards to Steeler he could also have served in a cavalry unit. I imagine some of their members attend airborne school (just a guess, will need to look into it).
Just curious how you came up with Clutch being a former member of Delta? If you have the time you may want to start reading this thread from the beginning. I did and it took me a few months but there is a ton of info in here. Steeler could have been Cavalry, and gone to jump school, or he could have been with the Sheridans in the 82nd. But, if he truly is a heavy tank guy-M-60 or M-1-not much need to be airborne qualified. I mean, the Army sends a lot of officers to Airborne so he could have gone just for the heck of it. |

maybe Steeler had a bucket list and doing a parachute jump was on it and he went to Airborne School to fulfil it.

I remember reading somewhere that the US Army Sniper School has a number of instructors / armorers etc who are also part of the US Army Marksmanship Unit (Both are at Ft. Benning) which has a sterling reputation.

In your opinion do you think that Sniper School may be more "revered" versus SFSS? It almost sounds like SFSS is good to get more SF soldiers trained as snipers quicker. Ugh. 75th Ranger flash on a red beret. Speaking of Sideshow Collectibles I cannot figure out the red patch that comes with Dusty (the other patch is 10th Mountain Division). |

SOTIC or the SF Sniper course teaches some things that Army Sniper School does not. Army Sniper School teaches the craft to soldier's in conventional units but as Tyroc pointed out, if a Special Forces operator couldn't attend SOTIC because of schedule conflict or no class availability, he could still attend Army Sniper School and maybe attend SOTIC at a later date. Army personnel can also attend schools outside of their service, such as the USMC Scout Sniper School and USN SEAL Sniper School, which allows them to get similar sniper training. I'm sure each service thinks of its sniper school as the best, but I'm sure a graduate of either of these schools is more than qualified to do the job of a sniper.
By chance does anyone have pics of Marvel issue 22, specifically the panels with the Joes dressed in their Class A's? Re-reading Snake-Eye's original filecard I feel he can still be in the 75th and have that kind of training (instead of making him Special Forces). However I think there was a panel or two in there with SE in a green beret. Not that I necessarily take the comics as canon but I do like to pull in various sources. |

I would like to make the same list only for Vietnam-era MOS's. Eventually I would like to do some Vietnam era fanfics that tie in with the Joe's being formed in the early 80's. I would love to do some fanfics of Major Bludd during his mercenary days in Rhodesia and Libya. I also thought of him crossing paths with Joe Colton during this time, with Colton being involved in anti-terrorism during this time period (which would lead to the formation of the Joe team). Lots of storyline potential during these time periods with the Bush Wars (maybe Bludd crosses paths with Wild Weasel?). Although I am not typically a fan of stories where nearly everyone knows one another and has crossed paths in the past I think if done right it can be believable. I am going to avoid everyone and their dog crossing paths with Snake-Eyes. Last edited by john shaft; 11-20-2019 at 08:46 AM.. |
