I was thinking either Navy EOD or keeping him as a Navy Diver but not actually part of the Joe team. He could be called upon to assist the Joes in retrieving a sunken ship that contains some WMD's that may have clues to where they were manufactured. Or assist the combat diver Joes with submarine lock-in/lock-out's. However both of those roles would be on occasion and he would most likely be assigned to the ship/submarine that the Joes would be aboard versus being an actual Joe. SEAL or EOD makes the most sense to get more miles out of this character.

I have other Divers for those other Dive jobs; lock in, lock out, SDV supervision, Compression Chamber ops, Dive equipment maintenance etc. I have a Dive Locker attached to each of the 4 Sabre Squadrons. I use the orange Torpedos as the Divers. I have about 30 or so of them. I remember picking up a whole bunch from eBay 99 cent auctions back in the day. Loose, still working on that Air Troop structure, will post it soon (hopefully) |

He's an EOD in my 'verse. I like his Eco Warriors version where he was partnered with a Killer Whale, then Finback the Dolphin. So I made him an ex-Marine Mammal System technician (who come from the EOD community) and now he's the EOD Senior Chief.

https://www.globalsecurity.org/milit...nd/To4718d.htm x1 Master Diver x1 Dive Chief X1 Senior Maintenance Tech x1 Maintenance Tech x1 Dive Medical Tech x1 Closed Circuit Repair Tech As for a dedicated crew on board submarines, I read this manual https://www.globalsecurity.org/milit...ttp3-34-84.pdf and as far as I know, Navy Divers on submarines are there mostly for the submarine; routine maintenance, husbandry, limpet mine search etc. I guess that they would have a Dive Medical Tech or two on hand for compression / recompression ops when SOF types infill or exfill from torpedo tubes bu anything involving SDV's and Drydeck Shelters (DDS) requires more advanced training and is beyond their role. For example, when a SDV Platoon deploys, it does so as a 30 man force package; x16 SDV Platoon (2 Officers and 14 Enlisted, usually broken down into a SDV Pilot, SDV Navigator, 4-6 passengers) x 4 Technicians (I think x1 Hull Technician (HT), x 2 Electronics Technician (ET) and x 1 Comms Technician (ICT) all cross trained x10 Navy Divers (including Dive Medical Techs). I read somewhere that of the 7 watch stations during a SDV launch, 4 of them are outside the sub. When deployed aboard a sub, the DDS platoon commander reports to the Submarine Captain or the duration of whilst they are aboard but is from NSW 3, not the Submarine community. |

I have 6 Navy Divers per Squadron Dive Locker. I've based it on a Force Recon Dive Locker;

So it looks like in the case of Force Recon that four of the Divers are Navy while the other two are Marines. Do you have any billet requirements for your setup? Obviously the Master Diver would be Navy. I am guessing the other five billets are MOS/Rating dependent. Also is your Dive Locker part of your Combat Support Squadron (with the MPC, Master Breachers, EOD, etc)? |

A while back I read some of a book written by Tom Clancy, with the help of General Carl Stiner, called the Shadow Warriors. It had to do with the Special Forces and how they had to change with the times. It starts out with the events that happened in the movie Delta Force, but touches events in World War 2. I read up to where the Special Forces dis their stuff down in Panama. In the book there was mention of the movie Green Beret. There was an event in Vietnam, that would be touched on when the movie We Were Soldiers came out. Now it would be interesting, fictionally wise, if a unit of soldiers were formed in early 1940, that just happen to call themselves G.I.Joe. They could be similar to the Dirty Dozen or Kelly`s Heroes. Of course they would be disbanded a year or two after World War 2 was over. Then somebody has the idea to reform the unit for awhile in 1950s. It would be disbanded later, but would get reformed for a good portion of the 1960s through 1970s.
Then we arrive where it gets reformed in the 1980s and things go from there. |

That could be interesting, BCross. I've always wanted to see the Joes in WW II.

Actually a G.I.Joe team of the 1940s might be modeled after a commando team like Force 10 from Navarone or Where Eagles Dare.
Now in the comics G.I.Joe was a secret Special Forces team that nobody knew anything about. Though when there is a battle going on near by, somebody is going to wonder about who these people are. Now what if G.I.Joe just happens to be part of the Special Forces operations. Everybody knows that G.I. Joe might be around, but just not what unit. G.I.Joe might not be a secret, they just stay below radar as much as possible. Or instead of one main unit, the Joes are spread though all the Division and get paged when needed. They all meet up at a certain base, where the commander show the base commander a letter that they need their equipment and vehicles. |
