Wanted to talk about Airborne (Talltree) and his SMS of "Helicopter Gunship Gunner". I thought I read somewhere that door gunners during the Vietnam War were pulled from the Infantry. Nowadays door gunners (at least for Blackhawk helicopters) are MOS 15T UH-60 Helicopter Repairers. So if that is true about door gunners during the Vietnam War (that is pulled from Infantry) at what point did they stop doing this? If it was after the Vietnam War and before 1983 (when the Airborne figure was introduced) would that mean Airborne was a Vietnam vet?
I know in my modern take of the Joes I started Airborne as a 15T MOS then he moved to 11B. However I really think the Army would rarely allow a person with a more technical MOS to reclassify into Infantry (unless they were with the intent of going into the 75th Ranger Regiment). |

However I really think the Army would rarely allow a person with a more technical MOS to reclassify into Infantry (unless they were with the intent of going into the 75th Ranger Regiment). In my experience in the USMC, it is rare to go from any MOS to the infantry, but that is mainly because the infantry is very pyramid shaped with the need for a lot of nonrates, and roughly a ratio of 3 to 1 for each NCO rank and up. 3 corporals to a sergeant, 3 sgts to a SSgt, etc. So, one way to solve this manpower issue is to transfer Marines out of the infantry after their first enlistment. They are still young enough that they have time to learn new skills, plus, their experience in the infantry might help them in their new MOS. It isn't exactly 3 to 1, because there are other jobs outside the infantry BN that require infantry Marines, but it is pyramid shaped while some fields are almost a stovepipe. For example, food service, which is mostly contracted now, the NCOs might only supervise a couple of Marines, and you sort of work your way up from being kitchen help to chef. I can only recall one case of it going the other way, a SSgt who was a bandsman really really wanted to be in combat arms and the battalion CO loved the guy and pulled some strings for him. |

I knew two helicoptor door gunners who were in Vietnam, one Army, one Marine. Both had primary MOS of helicopter crew chief/aviation mechanic.

I can only recall one case of it going the other way, a SSgt who was a bandsman really really wanted to be in combat arms and the battalion CO loved the guy and pulled some strings for him. Also it looks like soldiers had two MOS's during the Vietnam War era, their primary MOS (what they trained and tested in) and a Duty MOS (the job they were actually performing at the time). So if Airborne was an actual Infantryman (his primary MOS) then his Duty MOS may have been the "Helicopter Gunship Gunner" (door gunner). If that is the case he would most certainly have to be a Vietnam War vet. I wonder if Hama was going with the PMOS and DMOS as the basis for the Primary Military Specialty and Secondary Military Specialty on the filecards? I totally agree that going from one MOS to an Infantry MOS would be difficult. I feel that if a Joe character was a previous MOS the only way they could reclassify is if they go into a SOF unit like the 75th (or even Special Forces). Or like you mentioned have a CO that likes the person and will work to get them transferred. |

If Hawk was on radar before joining G.I. JOE, what did he do in the Army before he joined? Did he sit at a radar station somewhere? Why was he chosen to tell Snake Eyes that his family was dead?

he was a desk-driver at the Pentagon when he got sent to deliver the bad news to Snakes. He says so in the story, iirc.
He might've been the only one crazy enough to volunteer to head up the new Joe team. It could've been seen as not being a great posting for career progression and a lot of other officers turned it down. |

I have a different Team with Gears and the Tech/Scientists I could move them to. Last edited by Darkhawk75; 12-28-2018 at 09:53 AM.. |
