They do ride motorcycles and have a "biker gang" quality but I think they are more than that. They have a certain Road Warrior feel but were primarily conceived as swamp scavengers.

You have to wonder - the Dreadnoks first showed up in issue #25 (published in July of 1984), the same issue where we got our first real look at Zartan. But they weren't as fleshed out as they would later be, and the Dreadnok figures weren't made and released until 1985, a year later. Did Hasbro shoehorn them in around Hama's ideas, or did he have an advance peek at something that was coming out later?

It's also plausible that Hama gave them ideas for toys. Maybe the dreadnoks were his invention. Afterall the Baroness didn't come out until '84, and she was an original comic character.

Here's a question: why did Jinx, who first appeared in white, show up as a red ninja in the toy line. Was she originally going to be a red-clad ninja or was this thought of later? I'm not sure but I think she only wore red once in the comics, but can't remember the issue.
And now she's mainly portrayed in black. |

I think you're right to question this. I'm quite sure Hama was familiar with charater concepts and drawings before they ever went into production. In fact I believe there are some characters that showed up in the comics right before they showed up in retail. And he had to figure out ways to incorporate these characters into the story.

I think Hama created most of the Characters. Some he may have introduced sooner rather than later. But the toy sales drive it all, so Zartan the toy gets introduced right around the time it coincides with the Comic. The Dreadnoks were probably already part of the plan, so we see them before the toys come out. Remember how Ripcord and Lady Jaye are introduced in the same comic but are a year apart in production? Issue 32. Lady Jaye was way early and it may have to do with the Cartoons as well.

The dreadnoks were supposedly supposed too be like Ewoks, Hama threatened too quit if they were and then suggested "make them Bikers or something" The figures were released in late 1984 as a Sears exclusive and then mass releasedin 85. They have an 1984 Body Style

Jinx's white outfit was her training outfit, her combat attire was always the red stuff, and she wore that alot in the comics. No clue why DDP went to the black leather dominatrix mask/outfit.
Good thoughts on the Zartan thing. I really think they did drop the ball on the Dreadnoks all the way around. They made them too "goofy" in looks and temperment. Think if they were a more vicious/criminal Hells Angels kind of group. That would have rocked. I think Zartan and his siblings should have been seperate from the Dreadnoks, who would have their own leader.
