So here's a question..
How did Zartan wind up with the Dreadnoks? What is it about Zartan that just says "this guy would make a good leader to a biker gang." I can see Cobra employing a biker gang, what better way to have people roam the states stirring up trouble and not being noticed? They come to town and cause issues, it's a biker gang, that's what they do. No one is going to go "omg, this gang must be funded and working for a worldwide terrorist organization". So how did Zartan get them? Yeah, I know the comics explained it. But the toys came first, so how did Zartan become the leader of the Dreadnoks? He sure as hell doesn't look like a biker gang leader. I think Hasbro blew a perfect chance to create another character, the Dreadnok Leader, and also to make better figures for Zarana and Zandar (instead of trying to tie their looks into the Dreadnoks).

I'm jumping in a little late here on the aviation aspect of the discussion, but here's my 2 cents. Typically military pilots tend to follow a specific track: helicopters, fixed-wing or heavy fixed-wing (C130s, C17s, etc). Any pilot could certainly learn to fly any aircraft, but it's an easier transition for helicopter pilots to fly fixed-wing because fixed-wing aircraft are incredibly stable and the flight controls are easy to manipulate whereas flying a helicopter feels like trying to balance on top of a giant ball. A fixed-wing pilot could learn easier than any non-pilot but it would be tricky at first. It requires a different hand coordination.
I have no problem with Wild Bill flying helicopters or C-130s or even ferrying jet fighters. But being equal to Ace and Slipstream in combat maneuvers and tactis would be a different story. Flying a jet isn't difficult once you learn the systems and V speeds and limitations and have some simulator training, but being a fighter pilot takes a lot of training and I don't think Wild Bill would have the time for that. Every jet requires a different type rating and requires specific aircraft-related training and pilots don't usually hop back and forth between aircraft. A 757 pilot doesn't just jump in a 777; he needs to get trained and type-certified and then if he wanted to fly the 757 again he would have to get re-trained even though he already holds a type rating for that aircraft. But since the Joes are "special" individuals, I could see someone like Wild Bill being dual qualified, but it's a lot of work to know two or more different systems and be proficient in two or more different aircraft like the Dragonfly and C-130, but it's plausible. |

Also, the VTOL Skyhawk would fall into fixed-wing category, but requires specialized training like the Harrier.

No, I mean, out of all the characters Hasbro created, why was Zartan the one that they go "hey, this guy should lead the biker gang".

Looking back at the previous topic again, I think that the Joes need a few more aircraft and pilots. They utilized the F-14 but didn't capitalize on the F-15 or F-18, two great fighters. Now that we have the F-22 and XF-35, we'll probably never see these other classic fighters, but I'd still love to see a Joe-version of a SuperHornet. I have the BBI F-18, which is my jet for 25th Ace from the Senior Ranking Officer pack. Love this guy and the BBI pilot's helmet fits perfectly on him.

Black Dragon, Baron Iron Blood, Shadow-Loo, Tsang-Tsung, The Red Ninjas, Night Creepers, and the Taliban. Ultimately the Snow Serpent Commander runs the show, even though he's not a general. |

Well there weren't many Cobras to choose from when the dreadnoks came out. Zartan is an outdoorsman and a woodsman who rides a swamp skier so he's the closest thing to the dreadnoks and their background.

I also think the dreadnoks were created for him and that's why they didn't give them another leader.

I also think the dreadnoks are an interesting, even comically interesting, counter to Zartan. He's a sober, rational and calculating leader, whereas they are unruly, disorganized and chaotic.
