It's kind of a chicken-or-the-egg discussion as to whether the toys influenced the comic or vice versa. It's probably a little of both.
The toy line had a great run but it became so bloated towards the end. It's longevity may have worked against it in a wierd way. The kids who liked G.I. Joe from say 82-87 (namely, us) were not really the same kids who liked it in the 90s. I was 7 in 1982. By 1987 I was 12 and moving away from toys quickly. I think Hasbro had to scramble to appeal to a new group of kids and they lost sight of what made the toys great in the first place. The line got away from them and collapsed under its own weight. The comic had a similar problem. It became overly complicated and goofy while trying to tie everyone to Snake Eyes. |

I don't use CGs as frontline troopers. They're "sleepers". They're the guys that are working in the tech. company, getting the "lay of the land", and then relay that information to Cobra for the Resolute Troopers to make the attack.
CGs are also used for some missions that don't require alot of armed power. They're the "inside men". I use the CG's as my Cobra Air Cav/Marine Corps. When I consider all the vehicles that have been produced specifically for the Crimson Guard, there's a lot of evidence to support using them in this way. Those repainted MOBATs, those Crimson Hisses, the Crimson Attack Choppers... They're begging to be an Air Cav Unit. Basically, we use the Crimson Guard as a self-sustained unit of shock troops. They're basically the Marine Corps/Air Cav of Cobra. So my brother and I have 12 Crimson MOBATs and about 5 or 6 Crimson Hisses. We also have 3 Crimson Attack Choppers. All regular Crimson Guardsmen work and Mechanized Infantry/Armor soldiers. They are divided into smaller units, each lead by a Crimson Guard Immortal (more on them later). The Crimson Shadow Guard function as the Recon/Spec Ops teams within the Crimson Guard. They ride in the Crimson Attack Choppers and work in an Air Assault capacity. They are more elite than the standard red uniform boys - sort of like the Rangers of the CG's, and are lead by an Immortal v2. The Immortals work as the officers of the CG's, but are basically the equivalent of Special Forces. I use about 6 v1 Immortals and they are ultimately lead by my v2 Immortal. I also have a 6 man team of Crimson Alley Vipers that I use for an Urban assault/building clearing team. And because they're the right color scheme, I'm considering assigning the new Cobra Divers to the CG's unit just because it would be good to have a contingent of divers on hand, and the color scheme fits. I suppose I think of the CG's as way tougher/smarter than Vipers... and probably smarter than any other Cobra Troops - which is why they are able to act so independently and self sufficiently as a unit. I don't think they're as tough as Range-Vipers or Para-Vipers, but I've never thought of the entire Marine Corps as being as tough as the Rangers, either. Basically, the CG's are the fastest large Unit Cobra can throw into an operation. They're the spearhead that goes in first, establishes a hold, and allows the rest of the Cobra force to move in. That's just my take on them.

I would agree with the direction Hasbro was taking the line was way out of bounds and by that time had lost a lot of it's appeal. As for the comic having led to G.I.Joes down fall I am not real sure that is entirely possible, because from what I have read around here there are quite a few fans here of the RAH line that never even read the comic. I know you, Troynos, Tanksmaher, Loose cannon and myself all read the comic. I just think that some of those colors and concepts were to hard for fans to deal with. Bringing a end for a little while the popularity of our beloved line!
Maybe he was trying to kill the comics? I mean if your boss says hey, "Love what you've done so far over the years, but you know what, we're losing sales to the teenage mutant Ninja turtles. So add more Ninjas! While you're at it why don't we bring the Transformers into a few issues as well, That won't break up the realism of the story at all." |

Wouldn't surprise me if that was the case.

Yeah, I tend to think of Hollow Point as a copter pilot as well. I always forget him, kind of like I keep forgetting the BTR stuff existed.

I really like how everyone uses the CG's in different ways. And personally, I can certainly understand using them as Intel/sleeper agents. However, I use them completely differently...
