The early Battle Action Force comics (before the SAS/Z Force characters were phased out in favour of "Europeanized" takes on G.I. Joe characters) were actually quite decent. Some of the better stories could stand up to the best Larry Hama-era G.I. Joe and G.I. Joe: Special Missions comics in terms of craft (there were some really underrated artists on the serial). It didn't quite have the longform plotting of Hama's work, but taken as standalone adventures, the best Action Force stories were pretty good and had a delightfully black sense of humour about them... a recurring (unintentional?) gag is how Baron Ironblood would casually kill off/sacrifice his henchmen (he was very much written in the mold of a classic Bond villain). I highly recommend tracking the old comics down (Battle, the anthology comic where the Action Force serial appeared, featured a lot of solid non-toy related war comics serials) |

Damn Zulu, I know next to nothing about Action Force but now your organizational chart is encouraging me to do some research on it. I have been avoiding making my Joe team an international force (like Rise of Cobra) but I was going to integrate allied militaries to work with the Joes in my fan-fic. This works tremendously for what I need. Excellent job as always!

from what I read on BFTB's forum and in the "Best of Battle!" trade paperback I have, several of the writers for Battle! were ex-Forces, like Hama was. The British military has something of a reputation amongst those in the know for a black sense of humour, I think it sometimes appears in the BAF stories.

So I've been doing some preliminary visual research for the images I'm making for the Action Force dossiers I plan on doing in the style of the Filecard Project I was immersed in a few years back (don't hold your breath, though... unless I win the lottery and never have to work again, it will likely be several months—if not a couple of years—before I can finish them all). Anyway, I stumbled on this collection of photos of the Spanish Legion in parade dress and I have to say, they really look like a perfect fit for a Gung-Ho-derived character like Gaucho (or Guerrero, in my modern Action Force roster), at least uniform-wise. Teal short-sleeved shirt (with apparently no top buttons to better show off the pecs!), relatively slim-fitting medium aquamarine pants, leather vambraces... (On the plus side, I suppose this gives Spanish Legionnaires extra incentive to do PT... you have to be really fit to pull off the look)
Seriously though (and no disrespect to the Spanish Legion, who are a legit fighting force with a long and proud history), it's all very interesting stuff. |

Starduster would fit in perfectly with the Spanish Legion with his teal/aquamarine uniform. And I don't see why the Joes can't have a goat. They already have a parrot, a bobcat, a dolphin, a wolf, and a bald eagle hanging around their base. What's one more mascot?
Here's a quick digital sketch I did piloting the idea of Action Force's Gaucho as a member of the modern day Spanish Legion: I noticed some random pickaxes, and that their badge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Legion) includes a crossbow so that makes them even more suitable. Great picture, by the way. |

Thanks. I'm slowly trying to get back into the swing of drawing. A bad back means I can't really spend extended periods sitting at a desk these days... I can sit for about half an hour tops before I have to either stand up or lie down because the pain just gets a bit much. I've since gotten a small laptop and a graphics tablet which allows me to draw even when I'm lying on my back.
Anyway, I've updated the Action Force reference document yet again, this time I've added specialty descriptions. Also moved around some personnel specialty-wise and made Boffin female (felt like the original roster was too much of a sausage-fest and an intelligence position was probably the most reasonable place to put a second female operative on the team). I might post a couple of test sketches/composite images for certain characters later. (As always, if any of you guys reading the document are confused as to who is supposed to be whom, here's a guide). Last edited by zuludelta; 08-24-2017 at 05:21 AM.. |

On his file-card, Colonel Courage is called an "Administrative Strategist" as his Primary Military Specialty. What would that encompass?

Just curious if you ever filled out the roster from your last Joe structure (from many pages back) as you are doing with the Action Force one here? |
