I don't think you need to change how you use Scoop. Tank and Sean are quite correct with their assessments. A Spec Ops operator is technically savvy enough to use a camera (most Snipers and Recon are trained in tactical photography) AND PSYOP support is a good use for his skills too but you are also correct in how you use him.
From my understanding, based on what I've read from various sources (Power Point presentations, Linkedin resumes, etc) COMCAM operators do support USSOCOM and JSOC units in the field. Nick Irving's 'The Reaper' describes a Combat Cameraman attached to his Ranger Platoon Michael Golembeski's 'Level Zero Heroes' and its follow up describe a Combat Cameraman attached to his MSOT 'Dagger 22' Robert O'Neill's 'The Operator' I think mentions a Mass Communications Specialist (COMCAM) attached to the DEVGRU element that took out UBL From all that, this is how I use Scoop; He's attached from the Special Missions Platoon of the 55th Signal Company (COMCAM) - which supports SOCOM and JSOC units in the field. He's there as a SME and Technical expert in Tactical Photography and Visual Information Support - when folks have technical issues with their camera, software etc he's the go to guy. He supports all his assigned Squadron's training visual and production support, helps with any PSYOP / Information Operations support He supports all Squadron Administration matters (covering Passport photos, special events, promotion pictures, all the mundane stuff) He also supports the Special Mission operations; passport photos and photo manipulation for forged documents for Joes to travel incognito, helps with technical support for covert cameras and surveillance equipment. But the biggest reason why he's there is beyond the mundane tasks, he provides documentation support for WMD missions to enable the operators to shoot, move and communicate and concentrate on the assault. He documents the breach, the assault (for Transparency and After Action reports) and then supports the Sensitive Site Exploitation activities. He documents everything visually, sure a shooter can take photos but they don't have the technical skills in countering aspects like lighting, contrast etc. My Joe team's primary mission is Counter Proliferation so any images they take must be of the highest quality because it needs to stand up in a Federal or International Court of Law. His visual information is then given to Intel guys to peruse and catalogue. Your analogy of photographing each weapon is I think quite correct because COMCAM supports the Intel element by aiding in the creation of Weapons catalogues / databases. I think it helps to think of guys like Scoop in an SSE setting as Crime Scene Photographers (Forensic Photography is part of the Special Mission Platoon's training IIRC). As a Special Mission Platoon trained camera operator, Scoop would have Basic Airborne (some get MFF and Dive depending on who they support, NAVSOF support guys get SCUBA and AFSOC get Air Crew training), Air Assault, Close Quarters Battle, Advanced Marksmanship, Tactical Driving, Combat Casualty Care, Tactical Communications, Forensic Photography and others) That's how I use him anyway. |

When it comes to Tiger Force, I've always used these as the JOEs that go into a hostile country - ones that would never let American soldiers operate within their territories - and if captured or killed on foreign soil, they are denied by the government so as to avoid political repercussions for the U.S. It's pretty much the only way I can justify their existence, since I can't see them serving any other useful purpose.
I know that many of their vehicles have "G.I. JOE" on them, but even Cobra has used G.I. JOE vehicles and altered. I suspect "misplaced" JOE and Cobra equipment is all over the world and being sold to 3rd world warlords and dictators. (Larry Hama actually had several stories around this very subject.) So, even if Tiger Force were caught in "G.I. JOE vehicles," our government would disown them and claim that they were American mercenaries with "black market or stolen gear." |

That is a totally good explanation for Tiger Force Vehicles. At least the Cobra ones.

I was able to book today off from work so I finally had time to update my little Action Force write-up (and watch the eclipse!).
Click the thumbnails below to read the roster and a little intro to the concept. Click here to read my previous rationalizations for some of the deviations I made from the original. Last edited by zuludelta; 08-22-2017 at 12:38 AM.. |

And because I know not everybody on here is familiar with the 1983–84 Action Force characters, here's a handy list of the updated characters (in order of their appearance in the above documents) and their equivalents in the original SAS/Z Force/Q Force/Space Force/Special Weapons Force toylines:

That's perfect. Admittedly I was having a tough time reconciling the names. I forgot about Ton-Up in my Action Force, plus the Special Weapons Force guys. I got 4 more to add

One of my favourite things from this little creative exercise is just how much I've learned about international SOF (and other countries in general) in the course of doing the research. The legacy of the UK's SAS is astounding—virtually every major NATO SF/SOF/SOF-capable organization is patterned after the base SAS unit of a small patrol of operators with specializations in combat medicine, demolitions, signalling, and advanced/specialty weapons handling. Also enjoyed learning about some fairly obscure SOF units such as the Swedish Air Force's Flygbasjägarkompaniet (Airbase Ranger Company), a combat search and rescue (CSAR) unit with squads/patrols built around the abilities of a specially-trained personnel recovery dog: A typical squad consists of a ranger squad leader, an assistant ranger squad leader/radio operator, a ranger-qualified dog handler (and the recovery dog), two "ranger medics" (i.e., rangers cross-trained as combat medics), and a ranger-qualified sniper. A very unique and interesting set-up.
