In case anyone's interested, I'm still (slowly) creating the backstory for my fan fic, here's my bio for Keel Haul;
Born Everett Pablo Colby in Charlottesville, VA to parents William Clark (a nod to Clark Gable, upon whom Keel Haul's likeness is based on, a retired naval aviator and history professor at the University of Virginia and Paloma Gabriel, a Spanish born Philosophy Professor. Young Everett delighted in the tales of daring do of his Grandfather who was a frogman during the dying days of WWII and Korea, and his father's tales of flying F4 Phantom II's off the USS Intrepid during the Vietnam War and later as a member of the Blue Angels demonstration team (a nod to the FAO Schwartz 12" exclusive). Colby was an athletic kid with a strong sense of honor and civic duty. He was a boy scout and worked as a lifeguard whilst playing varsity lacrosse as a member of the 'Red Devils' at the Miller School in nearby Abermale, VA. (nods to his Brazilian filecard). Spent a gap year teaching English and working as a missionary in Brazil (another nod to his 'Anjo De Guarda' filecard) before entering the US Naval Academy (UNAS) at Annapolis. Graduated with merit with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering and represented the 'Middies' in Lacrosse, Rowing and Chess. After Introductory Flight Screening (IFS), Aviation Preflight Indoctrination (API), he was selected for Primary Flight Training and Advanced Flight Training in the Strike pipeline at Naval Air Station Kingsville, TX where he was trained on the F-14 Tomcat. (The F-4 was retired as an airframe in 1997 and doesn't fit the timeline, so I made him a Tomcat pilot because of the iconic status of both the airframe and the Skystriker). Reported for duty at VFA-213 at Naval Air Station Oceana, VA assigned to carrier wing 8 where he was spent his first fleet tour as a Flight Officer and Safety Officer. As a member of the 'Black Lions' he flew combat missions in Iraq where he received the Air Medal (nod to the filecard). (3 Years) After his first deployment, Keel Haul still couldn't shake his Grand Pa's tales as a frogman and with the F-14 airframe being retired, and not wanting to transition to the F/A 18F Super Hornet he pursued a transfer to BUD/S. Despite warnings from his command and genuine concern by his superiors that he was throwing away a promising career, Keel Haul reported for duty at BUD/S and subsequently graduated as Class Leader (he was warned that washing out in BUD/S would jeopardize his status as a Naval Aviator). After Seal Qualification Training (SQT), deployed as Engineering Department Head and Assistant Platoon Commander for Echo Platoon, SEAL Team EIGHT. (2 Years) Re-deployed as a Platoon Commander with Special Boat Team TWELVE where he earned the Navy Cross for [Classified - It'll be a story in my fanfic] Served as an Adjunct history professor at Annapolis (nod to the filecard - respected Military Historian) (9 months) Served as the N3 Operations Officer and later Detachment Officer in Charge - SEAL Delivery Vehicle 1 (2 Years and a nod to the IDW version of Keel Haul) Now a mid career LDCR, attended the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School at Naval War College (13 months - as per the fc) Served as the N3 for Special Boat Team Twenty Two (18 months) before another Staff position as the BUD/S Second Phase Officer. During this time, he was selected for service at DEVGRU / Seal Team Six and completed Operator Training before serving as an Assault Troop Commander with TACDEVRON Squadron Two aka Red Squadron. After a tour with the 'Red Men', he served a staff role at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington D.C. and Naval Attache before returning to DEVGRU as a Squadron Commander with TACDEVRON Squadron Six aka Mobility / Gray or Boat Squadron. Following this tour he gained Joint Service experience whilst serving as a Staff Officer with Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) and as an Action Officer with the National Security Council. With his career on the rise,he returned to DEVGRU as its Operations Officer briefly before accepting command of Special Boat Squadron TWO. He had just finished his MS in Strategic Studies at the US Army War College (USAWC) (another nod to the fc) when he was tapped for selection to the Joes, where his unique background as a Naval Aviator and Special Warfare Officer (with expertise in both surface and sub-surface insertion and extraction) was the perfect fit to build their new Mobility Squadron capability before accepting his current position as Deputy Commander (Operations). I think the only thing I left out of his bio is his DFC, because I don't think any have been awarded since Vietnam, which would have been fine when it was written in the 80's but my modern take I had to jettison it. Up next (if people are still interested) is Charbroil Last edited by Tyroc; 06-29-2017 at 06:48 AM.. |

I like how you made Keel Haul's original fighter pilot background work with your reimagining of him as a NAVSPECWAR officer. While it's quite rare, I've read of a number of naval aviators who decided on a mid-career switch to Special Warfare, most famous of which is probably retired SEAL officer Gabriel Gomez, who was trained in the E-2/C-2 pilot training pipeline and served as both a surveillance aircraft and cargo aircraft pilot before going to BUD/S.

Thanks Loose,
Before I post my Charbroil bio, I thought I'd show how I use the flamethrowers in my 'verse. I use them all as breachers attached to each Troop. They are the experts in all kinds of mechanical, ballistic, pneumatic and of course exo-thermic breaching. The flamethrower guys are specifically used in CBRN threat environments to account for their bulky suits and face masks. Also some SWAT and Police units use converted flamethrowers to disperse tear gas diluted with water https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Converted_Flamethrower_40 Here's some info on whom and what I'll be basing them off; Wilcox: PATRIOT® Breaching System Last edited by Tyroc; 06-29-2017 at 04:01 AM.. Great take on Keel-Haul! Originally I was just going to make him a "background character" and not really a member of the Joe team (just happens to be the Captain of the Flagg when the Joes are stationed on it at some point in my fan-fic) but this is really an excellent idea on how to make him an official member!
In regards to his rank during his progression do you see him as a Lieutenant Junior Grade when he goes to BUDS? That would line up well with him as an Assistant Platoon Commander. I was looking at U.S. Navy ranks and time in service and it appears that an Ensign has to be in there about two years before they can be promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and another two years before promotion to Lieutenant. If he spent three years as an aviator then that would put him at the rank of LTJG. |

I personally do not think it would be a far stretch in the JOE universe. Last edited by seaneley; 06-29-2017 at 06:44 AM.. |

Since he's pretty much a blank slate character wise, I plan on writing him as a bit of a straight arrow compared to Hawk. Where Hawk tends to buck authority, clash with his superiors, think outside the box and generally trust the man on the ground (I envision him as an officer like Pete Blaber), Keel Haul is more umm 'evenly keeled'. He's big on honor, decorum, a stickler for the rules and is somewhat detached (like he's playing chess with everything around him). That may seem at odds with his background as a fighter jock and SEAL who have the reputation for being aggressive but to me, he's more traditional military whereas Hawk is more of a cowboy. I envision him as more of a Bob Harward (ex-SEAL commander) type, who apparently refused to debrief his team until they were properly groomed. |

Cool info. I know that exothermic breaching is usually the slowest form of entry or making holes for advantage points, because it involves cutting through metals.
Question: Do you consider all the JOE flamethrower soldiers and Barbeque to have suits that are Hazmat capable? I personally do not think it would be a far stretch in the JOE universe. and to answer your question, yeah I see them as having HAZMAT capable suits. My take on the Joes is that they were formed to take on the Counter-WMD and Counter Proliferation mission and their anti-Cobra becomes more of a focus but it necessarily their reason for being. So all their equipment, tactics and procedures are based on them operating in a WMD environment (Integrated intel, CBRN and EOD support at the squad / team level, use of weapons and mobility based around Area Denied and Anti-Access battlespace etc) |
