Why would there need to be a Cobra equivalent?
Make him/her a new medic/chaplain and there ya go, a reason for a non-weapon carrying new Joe.

Given the parameters of the idea listed above, I don't see why an anonymous Chaplain figure couldn't be part of the team.
'Shepherd' certainly seems like a reasonable name, and is not specific to any religion. Hasbro has had religion as a part of G.I. Joe for a long time. -Clutch was always known to be Jewish -Zap came from a very Catholic family -Life Line's father is a Protestant minister in the Cartoon. -The Buddhist meditation of Budo, and the Ninjas. -Spirit's American Indian meditation and prayers in the Cartoon. -Quite a few characters have "Chaplain Assistant" as their secondary specialty, which is also something of a professional religious position withing the military. But like all religion in America, this figure would be offered but not forced. No one would have to purchase this figure. People who didn't care for the idea could simply leave it in the store. Is it so wrong to offer it as a choice. I think a lot of G.I. Joe fans are religious and would appreciate the idea of a Chaplain figure. I'm interested to hear more about what you think.

for real, i like the idea, and i love all the background Oliver has added to this thread. (even though it is a bit off topic) but this would never fly as a marketable toy product. and if it did what would be the Cobra equivalent? some satanic chaplain? btw that navy story is intriguing.
I don't know anything about an equivalent. I always figured Cobra Commander would have wanted the Cobras to ultimately worship him. There are a lot of very motivated and professional soldiers who claim Satanism or Pagan religion, and I think it would be unfair to label any religion, or lack there of, as the "bad guy" religion. I want to use Doc and the medics as paradigms. For years, Cobra had no medics... none. Finally, they made Scalpel, but that wasn't until the DTC figures came out. Dr. Mindbender was the closest thing they had for SO long, and I don't think anyone's HMO would have considered him to be a reputable medical practitioner. I don't think Cobra would need an equivalent. Though, "Omen-Viper" made me laugh very hard. I wouldn't want to discriminate against any religion. Rather, I think it would be good and realistic to represent the fact that the U.S. Government fully supports the rights of it's service men and women to practice their individual faiths, whatever they may be, by providing Chaplains... even into combat.

A toy version would be so small that it wouldn't even show up... sort of like how all the chest decorations, airborne wings, and medals all sort of get muddled on Flint, Duke, Hawk, and Keel Haul. It wouldn't be an issue for the toy to have a specific designation.

The Joes had how many medics before Cobra got a doctor and a medical viper? Kind of tells ya that Cobra didn't care about the health of it's people.
And yeah, they all worship CC. I always pictured the Cobra organization as a One-Worlder type. No state or country boundrys, no religious boundries, etc.. Just one-world and one religion: CObra.

G.I. Joe is not supposed to be: A Real New England Hero (assisted a little by other schmucks from around the rest of the country) I have no problem with New England. I love Boston and New Hampshire and New Jersey. I have cousins in Connecticut and New York. All I'm asking for is a little more equal representation. Before a State gets a third Joe, maybe all the other States should have at least 2 Joes. Roadblock is gone. IDW combined the Character with Heavy Duty and kept the name "Heavy Duty". As it stands currently, there are no Mississippians in G.I. Joe. Perhaps I can offer a suggestion for a character to replace him: Marine Force Recon Officer Code Name: Rebel Rank: 0-6 Place of Birth: Oxford, Mississippi Just a suggestion. Well that probably won't work either. |
