my take, as I've explained before, in Black Sword - where I was trying to be super-realistic - was that Blue Shirts were your radicalised walk-in-off-the-street barely-even-trained Cobras and the Vipers were the ex-Forces personnel who already knew how to shoot, fire-and-manouevure(sp), strip and clean a rifle and so on.
Heck, they could even serve as the Cobra firemen! Viper (v4) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive Last edited by seaneley; 11-18-2016 at 08:23 AM.. |

I always made them Iron Grenadiers since the colors were opposite those of the Annihilators sort of. Funny how that mold turned into the Iron-Anvils. But working with the Toxo-Vipers is a great looking fit too.

Keep in mind that on the original Cobra Troopers filecard it seems to indicate these soldiers are highly trained. Explosives, weapons and even martial arts. Would Cobra provide that kind of training for someone who is basically fodder to them? Plus the original Viper filecard states that they are the "bottom of the pyramid" so why would they have another group that is lower if that is the case?

I look at the first years' Filecards as Hasbro not knowing how this thing would go, so they had to make the enemy formidable. They don't even have codenames.
When they introduced the Vipers I look at that as a reset point for Hasbro. I wonder when they came up with the Tele-viper were they thinking there would be 50 different Troopers using that nomenclature for troopers?

I’ll also note that “highly trained” is a relative term. Compared to your average Walmart employee, a construction worker with some experience knocking down buildings is highly trained. That isn’t comparable to an EOD specialist, but may be more practical from Cobra’s perspective. I tend to view Cobra as a mix between a loose confederation of militias and this: https://www.wired.com/1996/07/aum/. The most effective acts aren’t necessarily those involving mass attacks. They’re a combination of targeted blackmail/extortion and assassination, and covert work, such as creating a logistics company, manning it with an Eel (for the maritime engineering background), a Techno-Viper and a Crimson Guardsman, and bidding on US military overseas logistics or construction contracts. Then they leverage that intelligence to sell “hits” to the highest bidder. Everyone else is just feeding information, labour and money into the machine. |

The Viper (v.4) card seems to agree with you. Also, where do you place the Viper (v.4), who is radically different than all the previous Vipers? He comes with an oxygen mask attached, so I always kind of had these guys paired up with specialists where clean air might be a problem (like the Toxo-Vipers or aboard the B.U.G.G.) where they can protect / assist the specialty troopers in the field.

I just read that whole article Lowtech, and there definitely has to be some of that going on in Cobra. Scary to think about too. Sure there will be legitimate aspects of Cobra that help fund operations, and legitimize Cobra Island as a nation, but at the heart of it all Cobra is a Cult.

These weren't "Vipers" per se, but the "Name Your Cobra" I used as Specialists - highly motivated individuals that could do what the other Cobras couldn't as a group. My ultimate inspiration for this type I imagined in my mind actually came years later when IDW created the character of Krake. I thought: "That's who the 'Name Your Cobra' is (that, and anything else you want him to be)!"

I never did the name your Cobra. Did they get Codenames too? I assume so. But were they troopers in that you had to pick their parent unit? I remember with Steel Brigade you picked specialties like Airborne and Jungle. Pilots too I guess.
