I posted this on another thread, but it occurred to me that it really belongs here. Tell me what you think about these Joes' secondary specialties:
1993 was a wild year... because the file-cards actually listed the vehicle "specialties" of certain Joes and Cobras:
1. Col. Courage - Patriot driver
2. Ace - Ghoststriker X-16
3. Cutter - Shark 9000 helmsman
4. Leatherneck - Brawler driver
5. Beach Head - Patriot driver
6. Roadblock - Patriot rider
7. Wet-Suit - Barracuda
8. Barricade - Badger driver
9. Bazooka - Blockbuster driver (Why??? It's a snow vehicle!!!)
10. Cross-Country - Battle Wagon driver
11. Iceberg - Mudbuster driver (again: Why??? He needs to switch with Bazooka!)
12. Clutch - Monster Blaster A.P.C. driver
13. Alley Viper v.2 - Parasite driver
14. Flak-Viper v.2 - Parasite rider
15. Nitro-Viper - Detonator driver
Some are weird, huh??? Like, would a Colonel really be the driver of a vehicle that had nothing to do with him being a "Strategic Commander": Heck, would a Colonel even drive a vehicle into combat?

As for Courage, no and very rarely. While officers are perfectly capable of driving vehicles (there's a famous photo of the CO of the A&SH driving a jeep in a nasty scrap in Aden: Lt-Col C C 'Mad Mitch' Mitchell - Telegraph), driving is an activity that requires a lot of focus, detracting from keeping overall situational awareness and being able to exercise command and control, so it's very very rare for officers to drive themselves in combat.

According to the book 'Zero Six Bravo', M Squadron is divided into 3 Troops; 4 Troop, 5 Troop and 6 Troop. The Squadron is commanded by a Major with a Capt as XO and a Warrant Officer 2 is the Troop SGM.
The book follows the adventures (more or less) of Platoon Sgt Steven 'Gray' Grayling and his 4 man brick.
At the time, the Squadron were conducting Mobility operations and were supported by 4 SAS Mobility Troop operators and 4 Delta operators (including one ex-PARA who had emigrated to the US and made his way to Delta).
Each Troop was broken down into 4 vehicles (Driver, Gunner and Patrol Leader as Vehicle Commander / Navigator). The fourth man of each patrol rode a Quad Bike outrider and these guys were used as scouts.
The breakdown for his patrol was;
Patrol Leader / Platoon Sgt Gray - Sniper, Medic, Demolitions expert
Vehicle Driver - Cpl Dave 'Moth' Saddler - Communications / JTAC
Gunner - Chris 'Dude' McGreavy - US born Weapons specialist from Texas
Outrider - Andy 'Scruff' McGruff - Lead Scout
I haven't finished the book yet, it's one of about a half dozen I;m trying to read / finish but hope the info helps.
SBS also has a boat unit made up of Royal Marines and Royal Navy support personnel who operate the fast boats, mini subs and the like.
The RAF contingent in the SFSG provides JTACs, Security Forces (like the USAF security squadrons & Phoenix Raven counter-snipers) and CBRNE personnel (just to add what you already listed)
Another interesting thing to consider is how Brexit might affect something like Action Force. The AF in my 'verse is purely a UKSF unit so it doesn't make a difference (and then only if one's Joeverse is meant to be contemporary reality based, otherwise never mind).
The Special Reconnaissance Regiment has often been said to have been based on the Activity and it probably had a good influence on it, but really the SRR grew out of Intelligence units in Northern Ireland during the 'Troubles' and can be traced back to a few units, but mostly what was called 'The Det'.
There isn't too much information on it but there's a book by ex-Royal Marine & SBS operator Duncan Falconer called 'First into Action' and it details his time in the Det, as well as his time as a Marine and SBS operator. His fictional novels also explores the Det and some of the politics behind the situation. His novels are very very good and are definitely worth a read.
Hope it helps

Squadron Commander: O-5
Squadron Sergeant Major: E-9
Squadron Operations Officer (maybe also doubles as the send-in-command?): O-4 or CW-3
Squadron Armorer: E-6
I need a few other positions. I won't do a CBRN billet as I already have a CBRN team on my Combat Support Squadron which can attach itself to any Sabre Squadron. I was thinking of a Logistics Sergeant and maybe a Communications Sergeant. Any other ideas for the HQ element?

Squadron Commander (O5)
Squadron XO (O4)
Squadron Operations Technician (CW3)
Squadron CSM (E9)
Intel Officer (O3)
Tactical Air Ops Officer / S3 Air (O3)
Operations NCO (E8)
Asst Ops NCO (E7)
Supply NCO (E7)
Communications NCO (E7)
Medical NCO (E7)
Radio Operator (E5)
Administration NCO (E5)
Combat Cameraman (E6)
I threw in the Combat Camera guy only because Media production is quite big in the modern SOF nowadays, and so much of their work uses digital cameras and other tech gadgets. In terms of Squadrons, I only have 3 DA Squadrons, so I only need to come up with 2 other Camera guys beyond Scoop.
As for personnel like Armorers etc, I use a similar model to the MARSOC Raider Companies so the basic Squadron will deploy with a small Combat Support Element (CBRN, EOD, Combat Assault Dogs, Heavy Breaching), a small Intelligence Support (CI / HUMINT / SIGINT / Analysts), a small C4I Team and a small Combat Service Support Team (which is where I put the armorers, mechanics, etc). The only real change there is that I've added two cooks per team. I read somewhere that the most often deployed service guys in SOF support are the mechanics and cooks.
One cook won a Bronze star recently when the Dining Facility he ran at an SF Fwd Operating base was attacked by insurgents, he made sure the contracted staff were okay before jumping on a crew support weapon and defending their position. I think he was put up for a Silver Star but got downgraded
Army cook assigned to Special Forces detachment earns Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge | United States European Command
This is kind of how I see a guy like Roadblock transitioning from a cook to a unit like the Joes.

Thanks for the information! I never know what to include in a HQ element and what to leave out.
I am not sure what each position does. Some of it is obvious but what would a radio operator do that the communications NCO cannot do for example? Also would the Air Ops Officer be an actual pilot (someone like Ace to fill that role)? Also my understanding is the actual commander leads his troops in the field while the XO and CSM may be back at a FOB or something.
Also I am assuming you have your Troops broken down into Mountain, Mobility, HALO and SCUBA?
Also I am currently reading Level Zero Heroes and it looks like what you described...a MSOT with additional Combat Support personnel attached to them. The back of the book has a breakdown on the team.

The Radio Operator is usually the Comm Chief's junior and is responsible for the Satellite communications equipment. I just wanted two communications guys in the HQ
A MARSOC Raider Company usually has 2 additional comms guys in addition to the Communications Chief; a SATCOM operator (MOS 0627) and a Data Network Systems Operator (MOS 0656), a SF Company will have an 18E (E7) as the Communications Chief and two 18E's (E6) as his juniors.
Not sure about the Company Commander, XO and CSM going out into the field. I think it's really dependent on the mission and circumstance and whether the Company is deployed as a Forward Operating Base and I think it's also dependent on the individual personality of the commander.
From a SMU standpoint, I tend to think they don't unless its something major, the Delta Squadron Commander was in the field during Gothic Serpent, the Red Squadron Commander was in the field during the Bin Laden mission and the Red Squadron Commander went out during Takur Ghur on a Personnel Recovery Mission to retrieve his SEALs (and got a Silver Star for it).
And yes, I have my troops broken down by infiltration type
I've spent the last few weeks tweeking the Troop organizations and I'm still not that happy with it.

Yeah I remember in the movie "Blackhawk Down" the Squadron Commander being the ground commander riding in the C&C Blackhawk (along with the air commander who was from the 160th SOARS). I picture Hawk in that role and made him the Commanding Officer of one of my Sabre Squadrons (which I named Tiger Squadron. Kind of a nod towards Tiger Force).
I think I finally have a Mountain Troop that I am 99% happy with in my Tiger Squadron:
Sub-Zero (90) Troop Commander
Blizzard (88) Troop Sergeant
Nolan “Ice Storm v2” Litgotke (11) Troop Medic
Dee-Jay (89) Troop Communicator
Alpine (85) Team Leader
Hit & Run (88)
Backblast (89) RTO
Snow Storm (93) Team Leader
Cold Front (90)
White Out (00) RTO
Nolan “Ice Storm” MacPhee (11)
Snow Job (83) Team Leader
I originally had Doc as the Troop Medic (I made him an enlisted medic instead of an actual doctor) but moved him up to the Squadron HQ Medic Sergeant billet. SO I moved Ice Storm v2 from Bravo Team to the HQ Troop Medic position. I still need one more soldier placed in Bravo Team now. I did something similar with what you had a while back ago and made my Troops have a 4-man HQ, Two 6-man Assault Teams and a 4-man STA section. Still filling the gaps in my other three Troops (the Joes have WAAAY too many Mobility-type guys and not enough HALO and SCUBA).

South American mountaineers:
Alpinista (Brazil Hit&Run)
Everest (Brazil Alpine)
Risco (Crag) (Argentine Alpine)
As a child, Everest was already climbing mountains to see the scenery from above. Thanks to agility and persistence, overcoming bigger obstacles was only a matter of time. He always wanted to come out on top, which led him to join the Action Commandos.
Arthur Gray joined the Army shortly after High School. He was nicknamed ‘Risco’ for his love of climbing and didn’t hesitate to choose this as his military speciality. Tenacious and fearless, this Commando has climbed the highest peaks in the world on super-secret missions to install sophisticated technology for satellite base stations.
No one understands more about mountains than Alpinista. He does not use special equipment to scale them. Uses only his hands and his feet! Knows every trail, every peak, each side of a mountain as if they were parts of his own body.
"When he was a baby Alpinista loved climbing on all everything in front of him: chairs, tables, beds, sofas, cabinets. And no one needed to rescue him. He was always a good climber!"
